I am a novice at Inkscape (0.44.1 with WinXP) and have a problem getting started editing some text. I clicked on the text tool (A) and then on the text but the formatting changes that I try to do, do not happen. What am I missing? I tried in vain clicking the selection (upper left) arrow.
sounds like to need to highlight what you want to edit. if you want to change font face -- highlight everything and select the font face and font size from the drop down menus. if you want to change a word -- highlight the word. wen you done and want to position the text, then click the selection tool and drag your text to where you want it, or grab the sizing handles and scale or stretch the text.
cheers, dwain

Thanks Dwain, that was a real help. I got it all but "to position the text, then click the selection tool and drag your text to where you want it." That did not work so I asssume there mist be another step to consider. Sy

place your cursor in the middle of the text box. when it turns into a 4 pointed arrow (north, south, east, west), click (the cursor changes to a white arrow again) and drag your text where you want it.

Note to developers: Text editing is not intuitive for beginners. I do not use the word intuitive lightly.
I dont know if Seymore is the same as the person who file the anonymous report but it shows how easily a beginner can get trapped and misunderstand the current layout.

That isn't to say the current layout is bad and I'd expect people already familiar with Drawing programs to be comfortable but bug reports can show us how usabitlity needs to be even better for beginners or infrequent users.
If peolpe have suggestions on how the current dialog could be improved please make suggestions, as I'm a little short of ideas. I should probably mention the Text dialog does need to continue to exist as there is far more text functionality than could reasonably fit in the toolbar (there was a bug report suggesting the dialog was redundant).

I've been looking over the Text and Font dialog and have a few comments:
1. It doesn't make sense to keep the entry window on the Text tab grayed out and unusable when a new text entry point is designated on the canvas. One should be able to begin to type immediately in the window rather than having to wait until one character is typed with the Text Tool over the canvas. This is probably a source of much confusion.
2. It would be useful to put a message such as "No text selected" in the window on the Text tab instead of leaving the text from the last selected text there.
3. The Font Family in the dialog is not updated when text is selected using the selection tool (it is when text is selected with the text tool).

This post reminds me of something: has anyone else had problems with Inkscape ignoring font size settings? There are situations (possibly with commercial Type 1 fonts) where whatever I set the font size to (toolbar or dialog), it is ignored and the text ends up being extremely small. I can't figure it out because it doesn't seem to happen on all fonts. Also, from a usability point of view, I don't think the font size should change when you edit the size in the toolbar until the focus leaves the control or the user hits 'enter'. It appears like it's being changed on key events at the moment.
I'm using the 0.44-4.fc4 rpm, but I've seen it in earlier versions too--I don't remember if they were still of the 0.44 family or not.
Of course, maybe I'm just missing some trick here. Any ideas?
Cheers,
ast

OK, but where will this text object go when you click Apply? Center of screen?

Agreed, it's worth a RFE

Indeed, please file a bug about that.

I think I wasn't clear enough. When you click on the canvas with the text tool, a text entry point is defined, i.e. a vertical blinking bar appears. This defines where the text should go. The entry window on the Text tab remains grayed out until you have typed at least one character. What I propose is that you be allowed to enter text as soon as you have defined the text entry point. Perhaps this is a bug as you can enter flowed text as soon as a text box is defined.

Ah, yes, well, it can be considered a bug. When there's nothing but cursor, the text object does not exist yet (unlike flowtext), that's why you can't type in the dialog. But now that I think of it, if we fix this and thereby allow the dialog to create a new text object, why not allow it to do that even if there's no cursor, so it just places the new text in the middle of the current view and selects it, when you click Apply?
