Hello everyone,
I have been using Inkscape for quite some time, and I admire this tool. I am not a professional artist, but I often use it for small charts or simple drawings; and to extend my capabilities, I purchased a digitizer.
On the Windows version of Inkscape, the digitizer is detected, everything works as expected, except one detail: I cannot use my mouse to do anything but select a new tool or change options in the GUI. I am unable to edit the image itself using the mouse, unless I disable the digitizer.
For instance, if I press F1, the selector tool is becoming active, but when I click on an object on the canvas itself - nothing happens; I can only select objects with the digitizer's pen.
I haven't found a setting in Inkscape to alter this behaviour (v.0.45.1, built in March 2007). Is this normal behaviour? I find it quite counter-intuitive, because I became quite efficient with using my laptop's touchpad to manipulate objects - and now I cannot do that anymore. Can someone shed some light on the subject?
I am also running Inkscape on a Fedora Linux desktop; in that case the digitizer is not detected by Inkscape (nor GIMP), although the driver seems to be installed properly and I can see events coming from the digitizer when I press something on it. The device in question is a Genius MousePen 8x6, with this driver: http://www.stud.fit.vutbr.cz/~xhorak28/index.php?page=WizardPen_Driver
Can someone provide any advice about this matter?
Alex
Hey Alex,
I cannot help you, apart from one thought: how does the digitizer work in Windows programs outside Inkscape? Do you see the same weird behaviour in (for example) MS Paint or something? This might help in finding out _where_ it goes wrong, Inkscape or the OS.
Regards,
Maarten

Maarten,
It seems that this is something related to Inkscape.
I have succeeded in setting up the digitizer in Linux, and used it in GIMP - there I can perform operations with the digitizer and with the mouse at the same time;
Inkscape - if the digitizer is enabled, the mouse can only be used to choose instruments, but not make any actual drawings on the canvas; only the digitizer pen can paint something on the canvas.
It seems to me that Inkscape consciously does that, this behaviour is in its design.
Maybe it would be reasonable to find out who made this design decision, and understand the reason behind this; then it can be discussed whether this behaviour can be changed by an option in the GUI.
Should this be transferred to the developers mailing list? Or is this one also appropriate?
Alex

That is definitely not the case. I have been using a Wacom graphics tablet with GIMP and Inkscape under Linux for just coming up on two years, and haven't observed the behaviour you describe. The only designed-in behaviour difference I can think of off-hand is that GIMP has a separate tool for each input device - the stylus, the eraser end of the stylus, my tablet's mouse, and my proper mouse - and automatically changes tool for each, whereas Inkscape treats them all the same.
Actually, now I come to think of it, when I started Inkscape wouldn't let me use the F2 tool (node thingying) with the stylus, but only with the eraser. My proper mouse still worked for all the tools, though, so it's not quite the same as what you see, and this behaviour changed quite some time ago. (I forget exactly when, as I tend to edit nodes with the mouse rather than with the stylus anyway.)
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I have a similar problem to the O.P.'s:
I'm using Inkscape 0.45 on a Windows XP machine, with a Wacom Intuos tablet. If I use the mouse/puck I can use the pull-down menus, but if I try to draw, the item gets drawn a long way to the right of the cursor. I also cannot select any objects. The stylus works OK.
I have not observed this behavior in any other application besides Inkscape. I guess it's a bug rather than feature!
