I am at the new and learning stage with Inkscape
Layers - I am importing vector graphics that was previously was on different layers, that information has been lost in the transfer and I am now trying to re-establish the layer detail. I simply want to move items from Layer 1 to the new layers I have established, the help files don't seem to cover this.
All and any suggestions most welcome.
With thanks, Terry
Maybe there is another option but you can do it selecting your objects, cutting them, select the new layer and use paste in place

Create all the layers you need with the Layer menu or the layer palette (SHIFT+CTRL+L), then select all the objects you want on one particular layer and go to the Layer menu: Layer > Move selection to layer above/below (SHIFT+PgeUp/PgDown) until you reach the correct layer for this selection.

Nice - so simple if you know how. Thank you JiHO and others
The layer box (SHIFT+CTRL+L) would be more useful if the contents could be displayed, at the moment the only check seems to be making a layer visible or not
Also with complex items it is sometimes easier to pick-up something from a list than by using a mouse window/click
