Trace Bitmap dialog does not appear
Hi Friends, I've been trying to help someone on InkscapeForum.com. They report that the Trace Bitmap dialog does not appear for them, since they installed 0.91. I've worked through every possible scenario that I know of, where a user can't find a dialog. (There have been a lot of these messages, since all dialogs became docked in 0.91) But in this case, the dialog still does not appear for them. And no one else has joined the discussion, with other ideas. We're hoping some advanced Inkscape users or maybe even developers could review the thread, and offer advice. Or maybe you'll need to ask them for supporting documentation, to file a bug report, so you can investigate further.

Thank you very much :-) brynn
you could try running with a clean preferences file to see if that makes a difference. On 32 bit Windows 7, go to the address C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\preferences.xml and rename the preferences file to something else, so it will not be recognized. Then rerun the trial.

FWIW it's not a general Windows 10 issue. I can see the trace dialog on my Inkscape 0.91 installation.

you could ask the user to upload a screenshot of the full window, just to verify.

Thanks Maren and Everyone, There's a full screen screenshot near the end of the topic. There's just no clue there, that I could see.
I'll advise about the prefs file. And I'll let you know how it goes.
Although....I'm not aware of any preference for displaying a dialog or not... Or else I would have thought to try it. But will advise to try it.
No, we don't think it's Win10, because he has another Win10 machine which does not have this problem.
Thanks again, brynn

Update:
Renaming/deleting preferences file worked!
Thanks to everyone :-D
On a side note, Maren, that member mentioned that he found the AppData directory was a hidden file, by default, in Windows 10. After some thought, I think it may be hidden in all Windows versions by default. (I've had my hidden folders displayed for ages, so I never noticed this myself.)
But if it's true that AppData is hidden by default, in all supported Windows versions, it might be a good idea to mention that, whenever guiding someone there, e.g. to find preferences.xml, to install templates, extensions, etc..
Would there be a way, perhaps using find/replace, on webpages, to add a brief note about it being hidden or suggesting to unhide if necessary? I'm thinking mostly about the FAQ, but there are probably other places where the website sends users "down that path".
And if so, would there be a way to do it for all pages at once, rather than fixing 1 page at a time?
If so, I doubt if I would be able to do it (able technically or able permission-wise). If not, maybe I'll add to my to-do list, to visit all the community related pages, where users are directed to or through AppData, and add a very brief comment.
What do you think?
Or maybe it's not mentioned that much, but seems so to me, because I'm always typing out that path for answering forum messages, etc??
Thanks, brynn

Hi Brynn,
as you know, I haven't touched a Windows computer in years. Could you verify if this folder is hidden by default on the Windows versions you mentioned? (maybe do a web search, or ask other Windows users)
If that is the case, this seems to be a piece of useful information for our users. To pass it on to them, we'd have to manually edit the web pages and inform translators of changes. There's no automatic search/replace for this kind of thing. Could you then also find out if there's a keyboard shortcut for the Windows Explorer (or whatever their file browser is called now) that shows hidden files?
I'd be glad to help with finding the appropriate places on the website that would need edits, and to inform translators about any changes.
Kind regards, Maren
yes, in my experience the AppData folder is hidden by default on Windows. I'm on Windows 7 (32 bit) and it is hidden. The normal procedure I use is to browse to the location C:\Users\username and then explicitly type in the extra folder \AppData\ in the address, even though the folder is not visible. This will open the folder for the first time. Then you have two options. First option is to create a shortcut so you'll never have to do this again. Second option is that next time you browse to the location C:\Users\username, all you have to do is type in the backslash character '' in the address bar so that it says C:\Users\username. At this point the system will prompt you with a drop down box of possible locations, and one of the possible locations will be C:\Users\username\AppData because it will remember that you were here previously.

Thanks Alvin, that seems to settle it :) And you provided a quick solution, too :D (I was a little disappointed to find out there's really no shortcut ;)).

I believe that just putting %APPDATA% into the path field of a file manager window will get you to the right folder for the current user.

Any chance we could get confirmation that this works even if AppData itself is hidden?
I usually prefer to provide users with this information (pasting '%APPDATA%\inkscape' (without the quotes) into the address bar of Explorer to open Inkscape's user profile folder) because %APPDATA% works independent of the installed Windows version, whereas the actual location has changed, IIRC beginning with Vista (?).
And is the information on this page still accurate? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environment_variable#Default_values

It appears to work on the two Windows boxes I have tested:
1) Windows XP Pro with the "Application Data" directory hidden, but "show hidden files and folders" enabled in Windows Explorer.
2) Windows 8.1 Pro with the default settings - i.e. the AppData directory hidden.
Not an exhaustive test, but the trend looks good ;)

Hi Everyone, Sorry for the delay. I think my mail must have been held up for some reason. I've been checking mail as usual, over the last few days. But suddenly tonight it all came pouring in - 3 days worth!
I tested what alvinpenner said about pasting the whole path into Windows Explorer, with AppData hidden, and it does show the Inkscape dir.
I actually don't know what the % means, and neither can I speak to the WP page about environmental variables.
But with AppData hidden, I typed in %APPDATA% and it actually opened AppData/Roaming. So that does seem to work. But it seems that pasting the whole path in would be more direct.
So what is the consensus for how to give this instruction? I still would just lean towards saying "might be hidden" and leave it up to the user to get Windows support for that.
But whatever you guys think :-)

I'd say the instruction should be "Open the Explorer and go to %APPDATA%\inkscape". What's your reason to hide that information from users?

As it turns out, there is just 1 faq (surprisingly) that directs users to AppData. So it's not going to be as much work as I thought initially.
