Would anyone have a script lying around to export inkscape SVGs to PNG from the commandline ?
inkscape --help
Apologies. Thank you very much.

After reading the post on tracing, I saw the entry just below it. It provides I guess an answer to the batch-converting question. The answer is: http://sourceforge.net/projects/conversionsvg/
Haven't tested it yet, that's what I'm going to do now.

Hey people.
I fear that this is a very basic question, but still I ask. I've put several images in one of my drawing. When I copy the file and take it elsewere, the reference to these images is gone and they are just displayed as red crosses. Is there a possibility to "embed" the images IN the file? Like the way PDF files sometimes are?
Regards,
Maarten

Dear all,
I have created an SVG file in Inkscape. Then, I have saved the file as PDF. However, the file size of this PDF file is quite large while the Inkscape illustration is not that complicated at all. Does anyone know how to control the final size of the PDF file? All help is welcome!
Regards,
Henk-Jan

I'm surprised this one isn't in the FAQ. Perhaps someone with an account on the wiki could add it.

Sidenote, but don't you think this is extremely confusing location for this very function? Nobody, ever, thinks about embedding images as about some graphics effect.
It is natural to search for such a function somewhere nearby save/export, or maybe within document properties (distinction between normal SVG and 'SVG Complete' or so...).

Agree. Another option: How about just right-clicking on any image with an "embed image" option.

I'm unconvinced. Such an option could be useful separately, but usually I want to embed all the images, not just one. Making the slow, manual method of selecting each image by hand, right-clicking on it, and choosing 'embed' from the context menu easier to discover than the automatic method of clicking the 'embed all images' button or menu option, wherever it is, seems like a bad idea.
Agree. Another option: How about just right-clicking on any image with an "embed image" option.
Even worse than what we have now. I suspect in 99.9% of cases if somebody wants to embed images, he wants to embed them all.

Haha! Cripes! Then it's settled. We're moving the option to the right-click. I win. :) Just kidding, Marcin. I'll shut up now. :|

If that is really true (and I would suspect it is) then the program's default behaviour should be changed to embed all images, and require a user to explicitly select linked images.

Embedded images are Base64 encoded, to the file size grow very fast and you can easily get to something huge. This is why you may want to embed selectively.
As for where the option should be, I think the most elegant would be a check box in the Save As dialog and the option should be remembered and used as default at the next save (of the same or another document).
Hello,
some comments on the embedding issue. I once broke an Inkscape document after embedding too many large images. This is why I usually do not use this functionality.
I really wonder if there isn't a smarter way of handling images. HTML/XML and similar "markup-language" files are just not meant to contain binary content, so it does not really make sense to embedd images there.
One possible improvement: When I use an image that is located in the same folder as my svg, it is annoying that inkscape saves an absolute path. I would prefer it if the image was referenced by a relative path, so when I copied both the svg and the image to somewhere else, everything would still work.
In 0.45 there already is an option to save a ZIP-File which contains media and the svg. To me this sounds like a very good solution, which is similar to what Open Office does. Inkscape could use a different file-type instead of ".zip" and make this the default for all documents that contain images.
Unfortunately saving a zip this way is broken in Inkscape 0.45.1 (Bug #168533).
Regards Marc

Sure. The effect was just the quick stopgap that someone coded. Of course it must be in a different place. Patches welcome :)
Remember, most of the time when Inkscape does something in a less than optimal way, it's not because developers are insane, but because nobody yet took time to code it the right way.

I've added this to the Inkscape FAQ.
It is an extremely frustrating bug - see here - https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171842
