Just installed inkscape 0.41 with autopackage. When I open it, I get a message saying that one or more extensions failed to load. When I close that window, I get another message saying that Inkscape encountered an internal error and will close.
In the command line, this is what appears:
SCIM: im_module_init free(): invalid pointer 0x9453670! free(): invalid pointer 0x9453650! Emergency save activated! Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now.
Do I have to uninstall SCIM? How do I get around this?
Thanks, Wayne Mandrake 10.1

I reported this issue from a Window's install perspective shortly after the release of 0.41. It does not occur with 0.39 or 0.40. Though assured that it was not a "problem," I admit to no understanding of the implications of the response received. Either the error message should be struck, explained coherently, or the underlying issue resolved. I have re-downloaded, re-installed and etc. but the issue persists and is disconcerting. Inkscape 0.41 runs, but one is left with the nagging feeling that it is not running properly. ...RC

At least 0.41 runs for you. I can't get past the SCIM error message. 0.39 works fine though.

I get that message too and it doesn't appear to affect running inkscape-0.41, so you may be able to discount it from your debugging. Examining the file ~/.inkscape/extension-errors.log shows the following.
Extension "Sketch Input" failed to load because a dependency was not met. Dependency:: type: executable location: path string: skconvert
Extension "Postscript Input" failed to load because a dependency was not met. Dependency:: type: extension location: path string: org.inkscape.input.sk

0.4.1 doesn't run at all after the "one or more extensions failed to load" error window. I end up with the command line error message about:
SCIM: im_module_init
free(): invalid pointer 0x9453670! free(): invalid pointer 0x9453650!
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

"One or more extensions failed to load The failed extensions have been skipped. Inkscape will continue to run normally but those extensions will be unavailable."
Wayne...I plan to run dual-boot but had problems loading Mandrake which I am investigating. The above shows that the Windows load of Inkscape HAS PROBLEMS and that this isn't just an open-source distribution issue. I would appreciate that this fact be recognized as discussion proceeds. I am new to open-source except for the Gimp. What is an "extension?" What are the implications of lacking an extension? What is new in .41 which would provoke this error message? (The situation is independent of service packs.) ....RCs

Extensions add support for things additional types of files (e.g. EPS or Adobe Illustrator files). Many of them aren't actually available under Windows yet -- hence the message.
Many extensions depend on additional software being installed to be useful, so if that software isn't installed the extension won't load and you'll see the same message under Unix too. That just means that the extension isn't loaded, though; Inkscape itself is working fine.
This happened with (recent) previous versions of Inkscape too, but until 0.41 it never displayed a message about it. It does seem to me that the wording of the message is less than helpful.
Now, the problems with Inkscape autopackages crashing on startup on some Linux distributions are real, but they're not related to extensions at all.
As far as I can tell they're the result of a known (if obnoxious) gcc issue, where things don't work if a different version of gcc is used to build the autopackage versus the one that was originally used to build some of the libraries installed with the system.

Hi Mental.....Thank you very much for your time in creating a lucid explanation of the "extension" issue. It resolves my reluctance to use Inkscape which is a key factor in my pending switch to open-source given my love for SVG. I am quite disappointed (except in the mobile device arena) in the progress towards acceptance of SVG in the past two years. My view on SVG is that it is Inkscape which will truly put SVG on the map. Kudos to a dedicated effort.
The CD's which I used to try load Mandrake came from a download from ink.org in .iso format and burned with Nero. The partitioning went fine but the first CD was missing a large number of files. Thanks again. ....RC

Sounds like some of your your C++ libraries (probably not SCIM) were compiled with a different major version of gcc than Inkscape. What distribution are you using?
