keeping document properties as default
How can I save document properties rather than re-do them each time I start inkscape?

You could save your preferred setup in a blank document and load that each time you start - just got to be careful to remember to "save as" a new name each time. Setting the file read-only might help with that (an OS feature, not an inkscape feature).
Hope that helps.

No no no. No need to do it manually. Just save as the default template and it will be loaded automatically every time you create a new file, and there's no need to "save as". The default template can be in ~/.inkscape/templates/default.svg on Linux or in [inkscape dir]/share/templates/default.svg on Windows.
I guess this should be added to the FAQ...
