"How do I..." questions
Hi, I just started using Inkscape to help out with an icon theme I've come to like. I just upgraded to 0.40 and found it to be immensely more usable; great job!
But I'm no doubt still a noob.... I was wondering if the following hangsup I've run into are possible. Help on any of them would be much appreciated:
1. I made 3 Bezier curves that I want to intersect into a shape, but when I try to change the fill for them, it changes on the outside of the shape. Is there any way to change that, or to have Inkscape recognise the 3 curves as a shape in its own right?
2. I'm in Linux, using librsvg 2.8.1, but one icon that looks fine in Inkscape doesn't render properly in the various applications I have viewed it in (it's an icon). What issues could be at work here?
3. Is it possible (again with the Linux version) to theme the icons on the toolbars? Like I said, I'm working to help an icon theme and it would be supremely cool if we could theme Inkscape. Kind of a hat-tipping to the program that helps us make good icons all around.... :)
Thanks in advance, Andrew Conkling

i'm not sure i understand your problem, but you can transform curves to shapes (stroke to path)

there are some cases when librsvg does not render correctly some images (in my experience, some of those cases appear when using complex gradients). those should be reported as bugs in librsvg.

yes, look for the file icons.svg (mine is placed in /usr/share/inkscape/icons). do not forget to preserve group names after editing.

I have 3 curves that make a shape. I want the "Fill and Stroke" to treat it as a shape, so that it will fill inside it and produce a stroke around it. However, when I do "Stroke to Path", the fill is then the line of the curve and the stroke goes all the way around the lines, inside and out.
Am I making sense here? 8-o

I'm going from memory here since I'm at work, but I've done this in the past by selecting the paths and using "union" or one of the other object tools to merge them together. In my case I was merging lines together and clipping them as well, I was eventually able to do it using using union, intersect, difference etc.
Another option is to combine the paths, then use the node editor and join nodes to make a closed object.
Cheers,
Select the three curves, do control+K (or path>combine) and they'll be combined into one path. Use the node tool to weld any coincident points together and fill and stroke should behave as expected.
hope it helps
John

Thanks (to you and to Robert) for the replies; I'm still a bit baffled as to why it won't work.
Could someone take a look at the file and tell me what I'm doing wrong? I've combined the curves, but they don't fill all the way. I'm not really interested in someone correcting it for me, but rather helping me to figure this out so I can become more adept with this program.

Thanks in advance, Andrew
Did behave a bit wierd when i played with your file, not sure quite why. Did clean up ok, just needed some nodes deleting after combining the shapes. Attached is how I'd approach creating that shape.
cheers

John, Thanks very much; that worked like a charm.

Thanks for this; is it possible to have this be user-configurable (for instance, put in ~/.icons/ and Inkscape will automatically use them), or must one overwrite the system-installed file?
Slowly on my way to answering these questions. :)

I have some files where this is happening and I'm not sure why. I'm going to file a bug on Gnome's bugzilla, but before I do, can someone confirm that this is what Nicu said it is?
Here is one example; it shows up correctly in Inkscape (0.40) but not in applications using librsvg: http://lila-theme.uni.cc/andrewski/gnome-balsa2.svg
Thanks for any help, Andrew
