Inkscape users,
I'm currently trying to find the best Linux/Open Source application for the task of "digital inking". For those not familiar with the term, digital inking is simply tracing over scanned images of pencil art to create a clean image for printing, and possibly colouring.
The make or break issue seems to be one of line smoothing. At first I thought that drawing smooth freehand lines was an issue with the Wacom tablet drivers (Linuxwacom), but it seems after some reading it is an application issue.
GIMP does not support line smoothing (so far as I can tell).
On the LinuxWacom mailing list, someone suggested that Inkscape might have some line smoothing functions. I've actually been using Inkscape for a while now on other tasks, so I'm not unfamiliar with the interface.
However, I can't find any line smoothing options. Do they exist? If so, where?
Using a vector graphic program for this task, in place of a raster graphics program like GIMP, would not be my first choice, but if I could draw smooth lines in Inkscape, I would happily go with it.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

To smooth a path, look at "path > simplify".

Cool!
Btw, regarding, an appropriate bitmap editor, I recently stumbled upon "Pixel" http://www.kanzelsberger.com/pixel/, a Photoshop-like bitmap editor, which is available for a number of OSes (like Linux).
"Pixel" is currently available as v 1, part of which still seems a bit buggy (like "Unsharp Mask..."; for more see the online forum). "Pixel" is a commercial app, although extremely in- expensive (USD 38.-; later USD 100.-). The interface is practically identical with Photoshop. A demo can be downloaded for free.
HTH,
Claus

HTH,
Pixel is indeed supercool and extremely fast but very unstable. It's crashing on me in every 10 minutes. At this stage, it is impossible to make serious work with it.

KRS,
Thank you for responding.

This is not quite what I meant, although the link you posted is quite helpful.
"Path >simplify" takes an already created path and smooths it out.
But what I'm referring to is, while drawing, being able to draw a freehand curve without the cursor jumping around and creating jagged lines. More than simply being unclean, this tendency for the cursor to not flow smoothly makes it almost impossible to stay on target when tracing over existing lines.
The style of cartoon in the link you sent lends itself well to creating bezier lines and then adjusting them point by point. But in a more realistic comic book style, that would be a maddening task with all the detail.
What I'm looking for is an option to interpret line data coming in from the tablet with filters that assist in making smooth lines. This is what some Adobe products do, so it's an application specific issue.
