I have praised Inkscape as an Illustrator alternative and some have responded that Inkscape has a problem with CMYK. One has suggested that CMYK items get converted to RGB on export or save.
1. are there such limitations?
2. Are there workarounds to preserve CMYK colors on save/export?

Hi,
As far as I know, Inkscape cannot export CMYK svg files because CMYK is not available in the SVG 1.0 specification.
SVG 1.2 is on the way (but AFAIK it is still a draft, not sure), and it has many new enhancements, CMYK color space among them.
So yes, when you export from Inkscape, it is RGB.

SVG 1.1 is natively sRGB. Even if a UI presents you with CMYK to pick the color, Inkscape is currently using sRGB triplets to store.
However, I'm winding up changes that will allow us to use icc-color (...) to preserve 4 channel info with sRGB triplets for fallback.

Once icc-color() is supported, using a CMYK ICC profile should allow that. And the Scribus will work on picking things up from there.
