Hey All,
We seem to be in a bad place with our nightly builds. It would be excellent if we could have a few volunteers step up to produce nightlies (or at least builds from every few days).
Anyone who can (or would like to) produce builds for Windows, Linux, and OSX would be making a great contribution to keeping us on track to release 0.47 in the near future. If you are interested, please speak up and we will do what we can to get you producing builds ASAP.
For the record, this is how bad the situation is:
Win32 - April 18th OSX - March 3rd Linux - nothing from this year (Autopackages are over a year old)
So again, if lending some CPU cycles and a little time is all you can do, it is still a LOT for the community.
Cheers, Josh

Gaz,
Depending on what platform you are looking to produce builds for, it can significantly affects what is involved. My guess (and I'm sorry if I'm wrong) would be that in level of difficulty from easiest to most difficult it goes Win32, OSX, Linux...
In general it boils down to:
1) an up to date checkout of Inkscape SVN (roughly 1.1GB) 2) configuring your OS environment to compile & package 3) compiling & packaging 4) testing & uploading (testing prior to uploading isn't necessary once you are comfortable with the quality)
I think that with the exception of the Linux Autopackages, most other builds should be relatively easy to produce.
So, on that note... if you're still pseudo-interested, please let us know your OS and we can get you filled in more in-depth.
Cheers, Josh

well I have OSX Leopard running on a macbook pro laptop. LOVE apple - HATE microsoft!!
I use inkscape (for designing) & signcut (for the output/cutting) for my digital die cutter. I assume this compiling etc would have no effect of that side of it.
I'd need all the help I can get as I have no idea how to compile & package - I've heard of it but more in an "urban myth" type sense LOL
well I guess I could give it a go if you can lead me, step by step though the process the first time around, and if I find I am really sh*t at it I could then, reluctently, opt back out.
so we'll go with the pseudo-interested at moment and maybe I can give it a "test run" to see how I get on (with a shed load of help from you <grin>)
we'll it's 15 to midnight here in the UK so I'm off to bed (more info than you need to know but..) so I'll have a look at your reply tomorrow after work and we can take it from there?!

How involved is the Linux process? I am familiar with basic ./configure, make, make install...but that's about it (I am guessing this is a bit more complex process?) I think one time I might have done something from an SVN tree...can't remember what it was or if the process even worked. I have an AMD Athlon machine running Slackware 12.2, also a Mac Mini with Leopard.

While we have traditionally favored autopackage because it allowed the work put into making a single package to serve users of many different linux distros, I don't think it is a bad idea to make distro specific packages at this point.
Slackware has always been a distro on which using the autopackage and even just building inkscape have been difficult for people. I'm not sure why as I've never used slackware. Anything you can do to better the situation for slackware users will be much appreciated.
What other distros should we look for packagers for? I believe Ubuntu is already covered by the PPA someone set up. Does fedora have any sort of continuous building system we could make use of? Do other people think contacting the normal distro packagers for platform specific help is appropriate?
Making autopackages is no harder than a typical configure, make process. There are different commands to call, that's all. Now setting up the dependencies and the build configuration is a slightly different story. Autopackaging is complicated by the fact that a single package can serve both the old and current c++ ABI and now even both x86 and x86_64 architectures. Building autopackages requires a willingness to learn about linking and check that libraries are linked properly so as to cause as little trouble as possible. There are also a few places in the codebase where we could use relaytool to make libraries optional at runtime. I think we will require a little bit of help from the autopackage project if we are going to get this service up and running again.

Hmmm... I have used autopackages on Slackware (10.0, and I think 11.0) in the past, with no trouble at all, unless I had a file dependency problem. My current install of .46 came from slacky.eu. I did have to chase a few dependencies, but it wasn't all that bad.
The only time I ever really ran into trouble was with that hard to find python dependency (was it numpy?) that was needed to run the effects. Looks like it has since been replaced with something else.
Ubuntu and derivatives I couldn't help you with in any case. I've had nothing but trouble from Ubuntu.

We have a build script for linux (.debs for ubuntu) that requires a little bit of manual intervention.
Cafuego generally posts the builds here: http://ubuntu.cafuego.net/dists/intrepid-cafuego/inkscape/
Am sure we can help out with this somehow!

In theory the instructions should be simple, and it should be easy to build (given the hardware and the time).
It is possible that the win32 instructions are not quite up to date. However, if that is the case then that just means that we need to get them updated so that things are simple again.

hello,
I took the opportunity to push a dev version for win32 from today to https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93438&package_id=... it contains the the exe-installer as well the 7z-archive.
Please note the printing defekt should be fixed in revision >= 21212 btw. a nice number ;-)

Nice, Adib, but now Win32 printing is fixed it might be worth putting up a 21212 or later build.
Great work fixing by Adrian and Adib, btw! Really good to have that one fixed up properly now.
