Hello all,
I just wanted to put out that SVG Open 2009 is looking for header graphics for their new website... which is about to go live. SVG Open 2008 had a subtle header with outlines of the castles in Nuremberg, so is probably not good for this year's conference in California.
If anyone is interested, this is a great opportunity to showcase both SVG and Inkscape. I believe that the site will be able to serve SVG directly for browsers that support it.
Hi all,
Thanks Jon, for bringing this to the attention of the Inkscape artists.
Here is what we have currently: http://www.svgopen.org/20xx/
The idea is to use the dimensions 850x200 pixel and that the graphics whould fit into the existing color scheme displayed at http://www.svgopen.org/20xx/ - although this is not written in stone and we are certainly open to change the colors. Also, the header graphics should somehow relate to the conference location and theme: California, Silicon valley, SVG, open web graphics.
I would like to add that of course we will try to reward your contribution somehow - we could offer a free conference pass (and dinner event) if you are coming to the conference, as an example.
I'd like to set the website live at http://www.svgopen.org/2009/ by Monday, but if we don't get anything by then, we can certainly exchange the header graphics at a later stage. This wouldn't be a problem.
I'd also like to mention that we hope to have Inkscape contributions at the conference, both from developers but also artists or other content developers.
Thanks a lot, Andreas

I like this a lot. You've got just about everything there, and the image looks fresh and crisp. I especially like the touch of having the control nodes showing on the 0 of 20
Hi Jozef,
Thank you for your draft! It looks good to me for a start.
We'd need to modifiy it a bit to include the following: * the SVG logo or parts of the logo (see http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c7/SVG.svg) - we'd need to include at least the flower/star-shaped thing - for a bit of brand recognition * the conference claim: "SVG coming of age" ... * the conference location and date: Mountainview CA, October 2-4 2009
See http://www.svgopen.org/20xx/ for the three issues listed above.
Should I give it a try for the modifications, or would you continue to work on it?
Thanks again, Andreas

I've made the necessary modifications to the banner. As for the position of the SVG logo and the claim i'm not really sure so i made several tries and compiled them here. http://www.imageox.com/share/373231-svgopenopt.png

It may be worth converting the text to paths as Chrome seems to have trouble getting it in the right place.

I agree with that,
however the conversion will be done in the end as a final step as changes may still occur to the image
Firefox too has a little glitch : it doesn't show the last 9 in 2009 in the text at bottom right
for the time being the rendering by inkscape 0.46-devel should be taken as reference (i always use a build no older than three or four days)

Hi Jozef and others,
I took your work and tried a few modifications:
http://www.svgopen.org/20xx/pics/svg_header_bridge_modifications_andi.png http://www.svgopen.org/20xx/pics/svg_header_bridge_modifications_andi.svg
I changed the text positions and text contents, rearranged the "SVG-sun" and added shadows. I think the position of the sun is better in the east - since SVG is on the rise and not on the sunset ... - there is contradiction with the shadows, however ;-)
What do you think?
The final SVG version needs some tweaking of course (proper SVG fonts and code cleanup)
Regarding SMIL: if you really want to do something it should be very subtile and not annoying ...
Thanks for your input and feedback, Andreas

Hi
I like the new position of the SVG "sun" and text.
As for the shadow on the svg logo it seems a bit odd (shadow on sun) but it gives the banner some depth and some more cartoonish look which I like.
However I think a thinner (1px) black border on the "SVG Open 2009" text would be nicer.

I also prefer fonts you used but since I don't have them I used the old one to illustrate my point.

Hi
Looking at the pictures posted so far I have this opinion :
- The text "mountain view CA, ..." is better looking on the mountais on the right side as it is more 'curvy', creates a nice synergy with the word 'mountain'.
- The SVG 'sun' is better on the east as, like Andreas said, it symbolises dawn and it also moves the focal point to the right where the name and the place of the conference is.
- 'California' label is redundant, there is already a number of labels on the banner so removing it will have positive effect
- I finally prefer the presence of the node-handles on the text, gives it the right vectorish look. It might be however misleading for people not familair with vector editing software. A topic to discuss then...
I took the version from Plácido Sousa and made some changes according to the preceding.
SVG : http://intarbutt.info/Data//Downloads/SVG/20092803_01_svgopen2009v3.svg PNG : http://www.imageox.com/share/373916-svgopen200.png
Basically i moved the SVG-sun, deleted the white halo on the base of the bridge and changed the color of the claim text.
Further remarks are welcome
Cheers Jozef

Hello I've made the necessary modifications to the banner. As for the position of the SVG logo and the claim i'm not really sure so i made several tries and compiled them here. http://www.imageox.com/share/373231-svgopenopt.png Personally i prefer the first one of which you can find the SVG file here. http://intarbutt.info/Data//Downloads/SVG/20092703_01_svgopen2009v2.svg Feel free to modify the image as you like, or drop a word here and I'll modify it accordingly.
