Taking Measurements or Define the exact size of an object
I know in the Gimp that when you make a selection you know the precise size of that selection how do you accomplish the same thing in inscape?

If you view the tools control bar, the dimensions and location of a selected object is displayed and can be modified.

There's also a measure path item under the effects visualize path that will label the object with the length in the desired units.
