I have a Slackware Linux system, at this point release 11. Slackware does not include Gnome. when I attempt to compile Inkscape I get a long list of missing packages. When I attempt to install the precompiled version using:
inkscape-0.44.1.x86.WONKY.package
things get even worse. Fontconf gets messed up and I have to reinstall Slackware 11 from scratch to straighten things out.
Which distro of Linux is Inkscape friendly? I can set it up on a separate partition.

ubuntu is very inkscape friendly. it does not come preinstalled, but it is in the package list for installation. version 6.06.1 lts has inkscape 4.3.

No need to setup a whole new distro just to run inkscape.
Use the autopackages on the download page, they work great!
(If that doesn't work for you, I'll second Dwain, as a Kubuntu user myself)

When I attempt to install the precompiled version things got destroyed. If there is another option that I missed I will try that, but on a spare partition. I try to stay away from RPMs because RedHat has a different way of doing things.
A stab at Debian comes first.
using:
inkscape-0.44.1.x86.WONKY.package
things get even worse. Fontconf gets messed up and I have to reinstall Slackware 11 from scratch to straighten things out.

I use Debian (sid), and it Just Worked for me.

It is available in the repos for Fedora Core, latest one available is 0.44.1, I'd suggest taking heed to the suggestion of using the autopackage versions, and if that does not work, then consider another distro.
