exporting pdf files: request for assistance
dear inkscape users,
can someone please help me with exporting pdf files:
i am trying to save pdf files of isolated text within a larger file. i isolate the text on the page and specify the export-area-is-page. but it appears that a larger file still creates a larger pdf file, regardless if i specify export-area-is-page or not. is this correct? i am trying to create pdf with minimum size, so this is relatively important. and the object id doesn't really work for these pdf's. so my question is: does the pdf take into account, or include the size of the whole file, when creating a single pdf file? and lastly, is there a difference to converting to paths, before or after exporting a pdf file?
thank you for taking the time to read and reply to this email. your assistance is much appreciated. regards,
arthur.
Hi, I don't know if this helps, but try this.
Do you have the file as layers. e.g. the text that you try to save is as a layer? If yes then this might work.
I usually make those parts of the figure (layers) that I don't want to be printed or saved as hidden and sometimes also locked, and then select all objects of the visible layer prior saving (otherwise you might get everything).
I have done this with my files and get only the text or any other part that is visible and not the other stuff so it works and yes the page option is selected.
Saving as paths might help to reduce the sice but I am not sure my files are quite small, and that did not have paths selected,

I don't know the answer to the part about the export size.
But for converting text to path, that will be very important for text, if the text file will be either on the internet, or need to be opened by other people on other computers. That's because, unless you use very, very common fonts, they might not display as you intend, if the people viewing the file don't happen to have the font installed. Once text is converted to paths, everyone can see it as you intend.
I don't think there would be any difference whether you convert to path before or after saving as PDF.
Actually, I just had a look at the Save As PDF dialog, which I haven't used lately. If you specify the export area as page, it should only use what's inside the page border. If you have turned off the page border, you may want to turn it on, to make sure everything is inside, before saving as PDF.

A counterpoint to the path vs text argument: yes, saving as path will preserve the *look *of the document, but so would exporting the whole thing as a PNG (I have gotten emails like this, and it is just slightly irksome). If you want semantic meaning to be delivered with the document (that is, if you want people to be able to select text to copy/paste or if you want machines to be able to tell roughly what is in the document), then text is the way to go.
Another consideration is that converting to paths may not actually help you reduce size, since all the vector curves in the letters have to be specified for each letter shape in the file, rather than just saying "This is a Q, look in the Q slot of the font file for the vectors to render it." Although I have not done so, I know it is possible to embed fonts inside PDF files, and although it would increase your file size considerably, it might still be smaller than converting to paths depending on the size of your source text. Alternately, you could supply the font(s) alongside the PDF file, to be installed by the end user.
In the end, minimizing vector file size is a technical art, in this case complexified by the conversion from SVG to PostScript, which PDF uses. The ifs and hows of doing it depend a lot upon your use case - who are you sending these files to, how many people, what is the mode of distribution, and can you correspond easily with the recipients to provide support?
Good luck, -Arlo James Barnes
i know a good email when i see one. you, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. and although i troubleshot my problem, i thank you for your time and efforts in your reply. perhaps we can keep in touch via inkscape. until next time, @rthur.
