Maximize problem on a laptop screen (too many tools' icon)
Hi!
My laptop has a 1280x800 screen, and a regular gnome environment (regular Ubuntu 7.10 installation). I have two panel, one at the top of my screen and the other at bottom (tasklist).
The problem is, that inkscape has a file menu, a global toolbar, and a tool's toolbar, and the tools' icon(the vertical one at the left). Overall, the inkscape windows is heigher as available screen (so screen_height - (top_panel+bottom+panel)).
So when i want to maximize inkscape, it does not do anything. It could be wider (horizontally), but pressing the maximize button cause losing the left and right windows border (about 3-4px), and nothing else.
I think that 1280x800 is fairly common resolution amongst the 15,4" laptops.
Is it a known problem? Or better it is dependent of the window manager? (i will try on xp too, in the next days). The inkscape 0.45 does not suffer this, because, there was fewer tool (no 3D tool for example).
If I undock the icon bar (at the left), it maximizes correctly.
Tried searching on launchpad, but didnt find a bugreport about this problem, but Im remembering discussing this problem in the past (having inkscape problems on small resolution). Do somebody remember such a discussion, or bugreport?
Best regards, Khiraly
It's a known problem. It won't be fixed in 0.46 but maybe 0.47. There are just too many icons on the left toolbar, and the toolbar prevents reducing Inkscape's window size below what would cause them to be hidden. We must find a way to hide or remove some of these icons so the window can shrink further.
The Eee PC has a 800x480 screen, so ideally it should be possible to run Inkscape with most of the icons not displayed.

is there a way to make the toolbar horizontal instead of vertical? the number of tools is only going to grow.

Or you could combat the space problem by adding another column or two like in Photoshop and Gimp etc.

Cramming Inkscape on a smaller screen could be quite a challenge, would affect more than just the toolbar layout.

If space is absolutely at a premium some of the tools might be consolidated, or functionality presented in a different way. (Other programs cram the polygons and stars in a single tool for example. Adobe Illustrator requires you to click and hold to see some of the subcategory tools, not that either of these approaches are without their flaws, just possibilities to consider rather than having even more tools shown all at once.)

Given the fact that Inkscape moved away from the layout of Sodipodi and GIMP an alternative solution would seem more likely.
I noticed the developers have made changes due in 0.46 to use standard GTK toolbars. Hopefully the standard overflow widget will soon follow if not already working in 0.46.

The change on horizontal has been in for a while, and does do overflow on the horizontal toolbars. After 0.46 is out we can get the vertical toolbar switched and using overflow.
However...
One other change was to use XML internally for the toolbars. Post-0.46 we will be exposing that externally in some fashion so that they can be configurable.
A workaround for the issue of not being able to maximize is to hide the toolbar temporarily (undocking may also work)...
It is currenlty unknown whether this aspect of the bug is dependent on the window manager. Khiraly, it would be great if you could report the results of your testing on windows at the bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168648
