Dear all,
I'm working on a poster (which needs to be delivered tomorrow...), and when attempting to export it as pdf I realized that some transparency was lost.
After quite some time spent trying to figure it out, it turns out that it's most likely because of clipping. Transparent objects in a clipped group loose their transparency when exported, while they keep it if their group is not clipped (e.g. when I ungroup the clipped group).
Please see the file attached. Try to export it as pdf, with all defaults. You should see that the circles on the main map at the top are transparent, while those who belong to a group that was clipped (for instance in the zoomed map of Europe at the top, or in both maps at the bottom).
This looks a lot like a bug to me.
Do you know how I can fix that ? I need the clipped version of the map of course, the other one won't fit in my layout...
Thank you in advance for your help.
Pierre.

I exported your file with Inkscape version 0.92pre1 r15009 and I don't notice any difference. Since it may be me not seeing the problem, I attach the PDF export, hoping it could help you.

Hi JFL,
Your pdf is what should be exported. What I get is the pdf attached. See how the dots have lost their transparency in the small map of Europe. I'm using Inkscape 0.91 on Windows.
I'd rather stick to a stable version of Inkscape because I use it for paid work. Any idea what I could do ?
Cheers,
Pierre.

It's strange because I don't remember having this issue with version 0.91. But I'm on Linux so it may be a problem specific to the Windows version.
You might try applying an effect over your design; this should force Inkscape to rasterize the area covered by the effect. This works well for patterns, which are sometimes problematic once exported to PDF. Any effect that does not actually modify the aspect of your design should do.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I would prefer not to rasterize anything. For now I've solved my problem by combining all the countries' polygons and cropping the sides of the map to the area I wanted to keep. The transparency issue is gone, it was really linked to clipping.
Cheers,
Pierre.

Does grouping before clipping make a difference? Also, have you tried masking as an alternative?
