Re: [Inkscape-user] Engraver's Toolbox in Linux (bulia byak)
Thanks, Donn!
OK... So I want to map the "Windows" key to "meta" (or something like that), but what do I map to the Alt key? Does it matter?
You know, I thought it would be easy to tell you how to do it. I use Kubuntu (KDE) and I have just spent 10 minutes going through the kcontrol and I cannot find where I set the Win key. There is such a confusing number of keyboard options (most under Regional and Access.) that your best bet is just to wade in and try stuff.
Sorry 'bout that.

I wish people would rise up in arms and convince those two windows managers to stop stealing an entire meta-key for one mostly useless function. Incidentally, it is under Settings -> Desktop -> Window Behavior -> Window Actions for KWin (KDE).

Agreed.

Hey, damn! I knew it was *somewhere*, thanks :)
I love KDE, but the settings are all over the map. Crazy.

Actually, I find myself using that function quite a lot. Especially if I get one of those windows that won't resize or part of it ends up below the task bar. I also used to have this old monitor that the top third would do weird things until it warmed up. I could grab windows and drag them low enough on the screen to work on.

But you can set up the window manager to steal Alt *only* for clicks on the window frame and then it's just as useful for those situations. It doesn't need to steal Alt for the client area too.

Is that the case for all window managers, or just KDE/Gnome. I pefer XFCE4 and occasionally use Fluxbox and Windowmaker.

I don't know but it recall it was possible in the 90's with FVWM, so I would expect any window manager worth its salt these days could be configured so that Alt click was only a WM command on window frames and not on the client area.

And it is just that what I most dislike about that DE... I don't hate it as such, and I really like it, but the amount of clutter is simply too much.
