Hi all,
I'm running Inkscape 0.42 on Ubuntu 5.10, and I can't get Inkscape to talk to my printer... It's an HP Deskjet 5740, and Inkscape is pretty much the only app that won't work with it.
I tried replacing "lp" in the printer dialogue command line with "lpr", but that didn't work either... is there some method of getting Inkscape to just talk to the Gnome Printer Manager for printing?
I've tried exporting as EPS and PDF to print in other apps - Evince or Acroread - but exporting to those formats seems to mess up the SVG gradients, and exporting to another format just to print is a workaround, not a fix!
Hopefully someone can help - I've had a look thru the documentation and some of the Inkscape websites with no luck so far...
Brian

Actually it's not so much of a workaround, just the same action done differently. The only two methods of printing that Inkscape knows are: via Postscript or via bitmap. Postscript breaks transparency. Bitmap does not, but it may give huge files. Whether you do this directly by Print command or you export first and print the file later, the result is the same.

Is there any print dialog panel in 0.43 release? Something like "Print direct.." from previous versions? When I try to Print.. (format A4), I get into console
$ inkscape ** (inkscape:12515): WARNING **: failed request with status 200
(inkscape:12515): GnomePrintCupsPlugin-WARNING **: iconv does not support ppd character encoding: ISOLatin1, trying CSISOLatin1
** (inkscape:12515): WARNING **: failed request with status 200
(inkscape:12515): GnomePrintCupsPlugin-WARNING **: Unknown Duplex setting == 'Notcapable'
Might it be matter of old preferences file?

In versions before -Illustrator 9- that were less compatible with other programs (about transparency and other stuff) and with exporting and printing those problems were avoid still having vector illustrations with the -flatten transparency- function especially when taking the files to the press, and making preview printing. This function is "used" by illustrator when exporting a PDF version 1.3 or less
Is there or will be in the upcoming version of Inkscape a function like flatten (or like now in other functions...better)?????? Also it is used in other moments in drawing workflow.
Making a bitmap is always an option... but takes more time (and space)
