In general, if it's not part of SVG and there is no fall back, then no.
It might be possible to develop a fall back however, and I'd be
perfectly willing to help if you'd like (I also looked into simulating
radial gradients with SVG for example).
BTW, have you ever had a look at diffusion curves? That would be my
personal favorite to add to Inkscape (instead of or in addition to
gradient meshes).
