State of Libre Graphics

Hi to all, reading LGM website, i find this: http://libregraphicsmeeting.org/2015/state-of-libre-graphics/
Inkscape is on it? Is the work done?
Regards, Jabier.

su_v says they're giving a few more days even though we missed the deadline.
If no one else wants to tackle this, I can try, but since my drawing skills are rather nonexistant it would be embarrassingly plain. So, I am asking for your help...
Sounds like basically we need three SVG's: First one with our logo and that says 'Inkscape: Draw Freely'. Second one should mention the 0.91 and perhaps other recent achievements you think are cool (see the Recent News page for ideas, https://inkscape.org/en/news/). Third one can cherrypick half a dozen or so ideas you like off the roadmap (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Roadmap). If you don't want to do slides but do want to suggest text or graphics to include on either slide, that's cool too.
Let me know ASAP if you can work on drawing one or more of these SVG's, and then get them to me by tomorrow morning. I can put the entry together and submit tomorrow.
If there's no takers, then the title slide will just be a copy of the 0.91 about screen, and the two other slides will be rather plain looking.
Bryce

You can use the slides from last year as a base (attached).

No problem, glad to help. :) Incidentally, if ever we need graphics for things, with some advanced notice I can create something more cohesive and less last-minute.
A bit about me (since I'm new here): I'm a career graphics and product designer based in London, and I use Inkscape in just about everything from web design and luxury branding to commercial packaging and convention displays.
Nice to meet all of you, and thanks for making Inkscape the fantastic tool that it is!

Don't forget to convert the text elements to curves before sending the slides. The font used are free fonts, but the Ubuntu font doesn't come preinstalled in other distributions than Ubuntu and the Chunk Five font is not even available in software repositories. The people receiving the slides will have to look for them (that in the best of cases, if they don't realize there are missing fonts, the presentation will look bad).
Of course in this stage the slides are supposed to be editable, this is just a reminder :-)

Hi. I didn't choose the fonts. This is just a copy of slide 2 from KK, with text changed, fonts in tact (for tweaking), and an icon for each main point. If I had converted the fonts to curves the editability would have taken a critical hit. I could have included the fonts in the zip, but again, I didn't choose the fonts in the first place, so... ;) On 24 Apr 2015 03:37, "Gez" <listas@...3059...> wrote:

Thanks for doing this! (I love the Unit testing and the Windows uninstaller graphics.)
Given the audience, I think the slide could be less developer focused and include a couple of end-user things. We have (had - it's bit rotted a bit, no pun intended) a swatch dialog ready (part of last summer's GSoC). One might also include SVG 1.1 compatible flowed text in a shape; it's on our funded development list. Since our plan is to have more frequent releases, focusing only on 0.92 may be a bit limiting.

No problem, I try and add a bit of fun to my graphics. Something small but memorable goes a long way. If you want to choose some more items, just send me a list and I will make matching icons for them at lunch today.

I've put together three slides using the above/previous submissions as sources:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/5501/
I've kept the items along a narrative and to a few points each. I've added some artwork of developers to bring it more to life.
Let me know what you all think of the items chosen. (The zip file contains svg and pngs)

Looks great... good work!
One point though is that there are four people in the slides, all of whom are white men. It's worth considering adding some gender/ethnic diversity in future presentation material to increase its appeal to a wider community!

Thanks CR,
These are great, I'm going to save them and hopefully use them in the future. The problem for me is that I've drawn people going to LGM, and our attendees are share many such qualities.
The lesson for us is that we lack divesity in the inkscape community overall (like a lot of foss projects we should work on that). Which I was sad to think about when I was doing the art. :-/

Well, there are things we can do about that, certainly. Maybe instead of just showing current devs we can show toon figures like these that are users, and testers as well. That expands the community beyond the devs, and in the long-term may encourage more women and racial diversity to come develop the free software with us as well (though, it's my thinking that gender is the bigger issue at this point, from my university Computer Science courses).
Thoughts?

It may be beneficial to show people doing things, like coding or using inkscape etc. On 24 Apr 2015 16:16, "C R" <cajhne@...400...> wrote:
Well, there are things we can do about that, certainly. Maybe instead of just showing current devs we can show toon figures like these that are users, and testers as well. That expands the community beyond the devs, and in the long-term may encourage more women and racial diversity to come develop the free software with us as well (though, it's my thinking that gender is the bigger issue at this point, from my university Computer Science courses).
Thoughts?

The lesson for us is that we lack divesity in the inkscape community overall (like a lot of foss projects we should work on that). Which I was sad to think about when I was doing the art. :-/

You're right we seem to be guy-heavy this year. In past LGM's we've had more gender balance, and we certainly have a number of strong female contributors in the Inkscape development community right now, so maybe it's just random luck this year. But I agree, this is something we should work to ameliorate both for LGM and also especially for leadership and representational positions in the project.

Can we get in touch with some past contributors? Would be cool to do a giant group svg with a collection of developers that have contributed to Inkscape.

I think those four people are actually renderings of some real-life Inkscape developers who might even be present at the presentation... I think I recognize the two from the last slide, at least, and the one at the bottom of the first. (compared to the hackfest donation page foto and board fotos). Doesn't anybody else recognize themselves? ;)

Haha, are they? That's pretty cool. Well, up to you whether or not you want to change them to represent different demographics. Personaly, I don't think I'd mind being turned into a different race or sex to represent open source community developers, so to speak. If any non-white or female members of the dev team wants to send me a picture or profile, I'd be happy to make them a character in the same style of these. It would be awesome to represent both at the same time.

I think those four people are actually renderings of some real-life Inkscape developers who might even be present at the presentation... I think I recognize the two from the last slide, at least, and the one at the bottom of the first. (compared to the hackfest donation page foto and board fotos). Doesn't anybody else recognize themselves? ;)

One point though is that there are four people in the slides, all of whom are white men. It's worth considering adding some gender/ethnic diversity in future presentation material to increase its appeal to a wider community!
Good point!

Given the audience, I think the slide could be less developer focused and include a couple of end-user things. We have (had - it's bit rotted a bit, no pun intended) a swatch dialog ready (part of last summer's GSoC). One might also include SVG 1.1 compatible flowed text in a

it's on our funded development list. Since our plan is to have more frequent releases, focusing only on 0.92 may be a bit limiting.

Ah these are items for 0.92 that have already been completed right Tav?
There is swatches code but it is not in trunk yet. The text in a shape has not been done yet; it's one of the funded development topics. I don't think something needs to be already done to put it on the slide. It something we intend to do in the near future.

State of Inkscape -----------------
Slide 0: Inkscape
Slide 1:
Inkscape wraps up four years of development work to release 0.91, with new features, a new website, and of course many bug fixes.
With this release, Inkscape is now fully converted to using Cairo as its rendering library, which improved performance, stability, and rendering quality.
They are jumping up version numbers with an eye to finally releasing a 1.0 version, maybe in the next year or so.
Slide 2:
With such a big release under their belt, the Inkscape project is shifting focus to tackle some longstanding infrastructure issues, and is working to build up the size of their development community. If you've got general technical skills or an interest in drawing software, right now might be a great opportunity to get involved.
The group has just completed a three-day hackfest here in Toronto, thanks to funding from hundreds of donors. Check their website to see what came of that event.
Peeking at their future roadmap a couple upcoming feature development priorities are SVG flowed text, and CMYK spot colors.

Hopefully with the text area / swatches stuff moved to the right slide. (although it's not /too/ important in the grand scheme of things)
