hello,
My name is Felipe Sanches. I am an Inkscape developer (also known as JucaBlues at the Inkscape community) and I am putting efforts in the spread SVG usage for web content. I am very excited about the possibilities that this technology brings and also about the openness of it (mainly compared to proprietary Flash technology).
I have recently developed a little game using SVG and javascript. You can see it here: http://bighead.poli.usp.br/~juca/code/svg/minigame/minigame.svghttp://bighead.poli.usp.br/%7Ejuca/code/svg/minigame/minigame.svg
I would like to promote something together with Mozilla. I was thinking about a game coding contest. The rules would require the game to use SVG technology and to run properly in Firefox 3 (and, optionaly, on any SVG compliant browser). I would like to promote this contest myself, but I do not have enough resources to provide cool prizes and also I do not have the same visibility as you guys have in order to reach the greatest possible number of contest submissions from the webdevelopment community. Even harder when you think about an specific technology we are trying to promote.
Since Firefox is an SVG capable browser, and Mozilla is clearely in favour of open standards for the web, I supose that you would be interested in making this contest become a reality.
I can write a tutorial explaining which techniques & tools I used to develop this example SVG+javascript game, so this could also eventually help promoting Inkscape, which is the opensource SVG editor project to which I often contribute.
I am waiting to hear your opinions on the subject, best wishes, Felipe Sanches
PS: these are the instructions for the example game: Enter key - Starts the game Right and left arrow keys - moves Tux SpaceBar - tux tries to hit the MSN butterfly
also, if you need, you can zoom the graphics with ctrl + (plus) SVG is vector graphics, so you wont loose quality when zooming SVG content
Hey Felipe
This is the most awesome thing I have seen in a very long time!!!
I would like to help with your project in any way I can. I am a bit short of cash right now but I can pledge $50 for a prize.
If there is any way you could post a tutorial on this I would love to see it!
Unlike you, English is my first language. However I still feel like I am still studying it, so I guess this makes me EFL, instead of ESL!
Having said this, I think the message should read: "game will be ready to play once this messages DisappearS, disappears with an "S".
Es muy Bueno!!
Good job!

Nice! I plan to put a bit of money on it too. Maybe I invest on it a tiny portion of my SoC money (what comes with geek stuff should go back to geek stuff). And maybe I get some funds from mozilla community support, they still didn't contact me.
I would like to ask here what prizes would you suggest. I need to figure out what would be cool to give as prizes.

Unless someone has access to some desirable goods at whole sale prices then I am betting that cash would be the best prize of all, no matter who you are, you could probably use some and shipping does not pose a problem.
When the time is right, I can send my portion via Paypal, would this also be a good way to deliver the prize?
I am just learning about SVG web design but on the off chance that I have beginners luck I would like to make a suggestion about an additional way to promote SVG along side Felipe's excellent suggestion. With Microsoft being the pricks they are, we won't see IE SVG support anytime soon and even when (or if) it does come we will need to wait until IE 8 is at perhaps 10% or less market share before we use SVG web designs for the masses, but in the meantime what about SVG only sites for intranets. Companies/institutions can dictate what browsers their employees use. This is the sort of thing I have in mind for my SVG only site. If like minded people worked together maybe we could move faster and demonstrate to Governments and companies the cool features that these sorts of sites could offer? If there were enough of them perhaps Google could be convinced to index SVG content too?
Just my 2 cents-patrick

That's great! Inkscape T-Shirts will be cool! Does SVG has a logo? I'm not sure. Maybe Mozilla could offer some Firefox Tshirts, but they still didnt give me any feedback.
I also have thought about books. I think that "The Beautiful Code" (the same book I got from Google as a SoC gift) could be a good prize. I am not confortable with the idea of offering money prizes. I want to give things that will be present in the winners' lives, so that they will always remember "that SVG contest I won".
Any other book title you would suggest? Something SVG related, maybe?
So, at the moment we have Joshua's cafepress items, Patricks $50 and also some money (didnt decide exactly how much) that I will put in it.
I will ellaborate a set of rules now and email you again.

hello,
My name is Felipe Sanches. I am an Inkscape developer (also known as JucaBlues at the Inkscape community) and I am putting efforts in the spread SVG usage for web content. I am very excited about the possibilities that this technology brings and also about the

Since Firefox is an SVG capable browser, and Mozilla is clearely in favour of open standards for the web, I supose that you would be interested in making this contest become a reality.
I can write a tutorial explaining which techniques & tools I used to develop this example SVG+javascript game, so this could also eventually help promoting Inkscape, which is the opensource SVG

project to which I often contribute.

Actually, while t-shirts are really cool and I'd want to offer them as a prize, I really like the idea of a coffee mug / beer stein as well, so I'm definitely going to offer that. It would last longer, too, if one is careful. There are some other cool things I can do (mousepads, coasters, posters, magnets, etc). Maybe anyone who participates could get something like a magnet or sticker. (BTW, this would not garner me any profit, in case anyone's suspicious - it's an opportunity to do something I've been wanting to for a while anyway.)
SVG does have a logo, though I don't much like it: http://www.root2art.co.uk/svg_logo_download/index.php
However, disregarding my personal opinions, maybe it would be decent to offer that as the main design element, since it's a contest about SVG rather than Inkscape. Though we could still offer an Inkscape something.

Here are my proposal of rules:
1. Submissions must consist of a game. You can take this ( http://bighead.poli.usp.br/~juca/code/svg/minigame/minigame.svg) as an example, but you are not obliged to follow the same concept. Feel free to make whatever game you want. Bonus points if you add game instructions in the game itself. 2. It must use SVG and javascript. 3. It must run properly in Firefox 3 (this is what we will use for testing your game). It is also desirable (but totally optional) that you take efforts into making it run properly on other SVG-compliant browsers. 4. This contest is promoting Free Software and Open Standards. So, your submission must be licensed under a free-software/free-content license of your choice. By entering in this contest you are not transfering any of your copyrights. You will continue to be the copyright holder of the work submitted. We just require that you use a licensing that would allow others to eventually further improve your work. 5. If you want, you can use AJAX techniques in your SVG game (to store hi-scores in a server or to implement a multiplayer online game, for example). Server-side code can be implemented in the language and framework of your choice. You are not required to use AJAX or any server-side code, but if you do, you must also provide the server-side source code and brief instructions on how to setup a server for your game. 6. The SVG file(s) can be created either manually, or using a vector graphics editor (such as Inkscape) or even with whatever technique you wish (maybe you wish to use XSLT, for example...). Basically, if it is useful to you, final result is an SVG, and it is based on open standards then you can use it in this contest. We will be glad (bonus points) to know what did you use to create your work. 7. Submission must be sent to <email> until <date>, which is the contest deadline. The email must contain your name, an URL where the game is hosted, licensing information and a copy of all source code. During at least the next 2 weeks your submission must be kept online on the URL provided. We will test your game on the URL provided. We might eventually host all submissions in a single website, that's why we are asking you to send a copy of your code. 8. We will judge submissions based on your creativity, and the proper usage of the SVG 1.1 standard.
please tell me what you think about the rules
oh! and an aditional rule:
9. You can send any number of submissions you would like but nobody can get more than one prize.
guys, please correct my english if you see any mistakes.
Juca
These rules and the extra one posted after it look fine to me.
Heading back to the prize issue...
I fully understand and appreciate why Felipe wants non-monetary prizes. I am quite fanatically sentimental about gifts/prizes myself. A more tangible prize then a PayPal money transfer will feel better a lot longer.
However shipping raises it's ugly head. As we all know, wealth and presumably computer literacy, have exploded outside of Western Europe and North America. This contest really should be an inclusive event. We should consider the possibility that the winner maybe in a troublesome shipping zone and factor this into our pledges.
I ship to Universities all over the place, as a point of reference, an 18 inch cubed box(about 50 cm)I ship from Canada will be about $50 to the U.S(University of Notre Dame), <$100 to Western Europe(University of S. Denmark) but will be a little over $400 to Iraq(University of Kerbala).
I can't afford to pledge one alone but would a vinyl cutter be good? I was going to buy one in the next month or two (actually to assist in Inkscape's integration of vinyl cutter control but that's another discussion) it will not be anymore work to shop for a model for the prize and if I order two it might be even cheaper, surely at the very least the shipping will be.

8. We will judge submissions based on your creativity, and the proper usage of the SVG 1.1 standard.
please tell me what you think about the rules
wow! vinyl cutter sounds like a great 1st prize. How much does one of these cost? I even consider not only paying part of the prize but also buying one of these to me :-)
Also, my girlfriend suggested that we add gameplay and code quality as criteria for the classification of submissions.
interesting topic Felipe, I can give you free life time webhosting for your project, I can program your website also if you like, maybe creating something like svgames.org or something, a website dedicated for SVG in games, and you may but the contest in it, we can host users submissions in the site also, instead of hosting them else where..
I have been looking in to buying a cutter to reverse engineer the command set to pass on to the Inkscape developers. Perhaps we could also buy one as a prize for the SVG game contest.
I need help selecting a good model.
Roland and Graphtec seem to be common names.
They are all pretty pricey, even the Robo craft is $329 U.S
I downloaded a Roland user manual and I called for help. The specifications are vague. It is easy to find the cutting size and downforce but what about resolution of cuts?
What models should we steer clear of?
Can I forward this thread to the user list? It does not seem to be of exclusive interest to the developers, is it?

I have just created a tutorial here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/SVG_with_javascript
