Choosing an Open Font for Inkscape "Draw Freely".
TLDR: We are voting on an Open Font replacement for the "Draw Freely" Tagline. Jump down to the link and click it to see what the options are.
Since the feedback so far has been good on the user tutorial thread, I'd like to reach everyone I can to make this decision, in case not everyone is paying attention to the video tutorial stuff, so here's another opportunity to vote!
In short: we'd like to replace the "Draw Freely" tagline with a font which we will use as an official font for the Inkscape project. The main reason for this is that the currently used font is proprietary, and the general consensus (via mailing list and #inkscape) is that we'd like to replace it with an open alternative.
Reasons for this are:
1. We can not change the font - Thus, we are unable to add extra character support for other languages. 2. We can not use the font elsewhere without paying more license fees, and we would like to be able to use the same font on the website, in tutorial videos, and other user documentation. 3. We can not distribute the font with Inkscape materials without paying license fees. 4. Our users can't use the font in their own materials without paying license fees. 5. Open fonts rock, in all the same ways that Open Source software rocks, and contributes to creative freedom, which is in line with the project's creedo "Draw Freely".
Thus, I have pillaged Google's collection of fonts which are composed of fonts with the SIL Open Font license, and Apache Licenses, pulling out all the ones that looked scripty/handwritten. I have written a page that allows a preview of each of them along with the Inkscape logo here: http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/samples/draw_freely_font_list.html
Use keyboard arrow-keys (left and right) to scroll through the fonts, and (up and down) keys to enlarge or decrease the font size to your liking (you can also click a link out of the list on the left to jump to your at-a-glance favs).
To vote on your favourites, just reply to this email with the font name(s), number(s), and/or a copy of the share link at the bottom of the page. If you've already voted, you don't need to again. :)

I couldent go to IRC since Im disconnected at home so my vote is for "Sacramento" Also maybe inkscape-user mailing list welcome this mail. Finaly, any option use the same font as INKSCAPE text in for example lowercase? Great selection page!
All the best, Jabier.

The Inkscape font has also been mentioned as something we might want to change. I'll put that up for discussion after "Draw Freely" since there is more reason to change the scripty font than the all-caps INKSCAPE font (which, if proprietary can be changed to nearly anything with roman caps, if we still like it). I will post a different message to the inkscape-user mailing list after collecting votes from this mailing list. It will be fun to see the difference in votes. :)

Hey everyone! Okay, all votes are in, so we've narrowed it down to these fonts: http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/samples/draw-freely_vote_outlined.s...
Please choose the number (in the upper left corner) of the font(s) you like the best, and reply here. I will tally these votes with the user votes, and we'll have our new Draw Freely font!
Thanks again for your help and opinions. :)

I like the elegance of 9... I also like the "natural" feel of 6. There we go, I'm choosing one from each group. Sorry. I have an appreciation for both technical perfection and crude organic movement. As an aside... if it gets narrowed down further instead of a clear winner, it would be nice to see the phrase in a couple different languages for aesthetic purposes. Also... don't forget it's "Draw Freely." which includes a period.
Cheers, Josh

Unless the original creator of the font specifically made it an open license, this is a stolen font. Adding/changing a few glyphs to a proprietary font and re-posting it as creative commons, does not make it creative commons.
I have done a comparison of the glyphs in the original Pushkin font (Copyright [c] A.S.Puskin & ParaType, 1999) and the "newPushkin" font downloaded from that page.
View the results here: http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/samples/pushkin_vs_new_pushkin_outl...
Someone has egregiously ripped-off this font, even going as far as to remove the author's signature glyph from the original. It should be taken down immediately from all Libre projects.

- We can not change the font - Thus, we are unable to add extra
character support for other languages.
I have written a page that allows a preview of each of them along with the Inkscape logo here: http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/samples/draw_freely_font_l ist.html
Cheers. -C

View the results here: http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/samples/pushkin_vs_new_pushkin_outl ined.pdf
Did you actually compare the nodes of the individual glyphs? While I don't think that it's the case here it would still be possible that the original font was redrawn with the same look, however AFAIK only the actual vector information of a font is copyrighted, not the look.
Someone has egregiously ripped-off this font, even going as far as to remove the author's signature glyph from the original.
This is a claim not being proven by your visual comparison. So better back it with data.
It should be taken down immediately from all Libre projects.

Yes, node comparison was the first thing I checked. I figured since the original vectors are in the pdf file, one could compare the nodes themselves if there were any doubt. I have added a node data comparison to the file for ease of viewing however: http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/samples/pushkin_vs_new_pushkin_outl...

I have also added the Signature glyphs to the bottom. While it's possible they could have just been removed/replaced for utilitarian sake, it doesn't change the fact that most of this font is whole-sale ripped off of the original. I believe even a single glyph copied from a copyright font is potential grounds for litigation.
I say, let's not take the risk.
