Decommission SourceForge Downloads
Dear Developers,
Because of the thousands of downloads per week of old inkscape releases (mostly windows msi files) from the sourceforge account and because of our successful transition to using our own website with caching proxy fastly.
I will be deleting all files from the SourceForge files folder in two weeks time (June 14th). Please make sure you have any and all files you wish to back up, and any downloads you want to make available for your platform available on the website.
If there are any objections please raise them here and I won't go ahead with the proposed deletion.
This cleanup is mostly to reduce our online search footprint, reduce confusion with users and prevent users getting hold of old, obsolete or buggy versions of inkscape. (I've mentioned this cleanup before, but I wanted to be more proactive and state that I'll do it and take responsibility)
Best Regards, Martin Owens
Hi Martin,
should we also explicitly ask sourceforge to not mirror Inkscape's binaries (see current gimp discussions and sourceforge blog for more info)? Do we have a repo for historical versions somewhere? (or good private backups?) Might be nice to be able to try those out in a VM in a few years ;)
Regards, Maren

It makes me sad to see such a large part of Inkscape's release history (not just the files, but also the timeline, the statistics etc.) completely purged so quickly (on short notice) and so easily (no alternatives).
I tend towards objecting the mentioned 'each on his/her own' method (grab them as long as you can) - this is about files going back as far as Feb 2004. IMvHO all files of past releases should be archived by the project itself, not by relying on individuals storing random (local) copies as "backups". Either way all original upload dates, and past download statistics (and the filters to access them) will be lost entirely once the files have been deleted from the project's 'files' folder at sf.net.
If SF continues its current track, I also wonder whether this action won't backfire later on - as in serving as perfect argument for SF to create their own “mirror” for Inkscape packages (based on http://sourceforge.net/mirror/ ), and to enable the "enhanced-installer-with-payload" wrapper for Windows and OS X downloads at will, without the project having any control over the download links and the files hosted in that “mirror”.

Hello Martin,
We should have a copy of the 2(two) last releases available for download. When I got stuck by a new bug then I tend to try with older versions. ...
S_uv mentioned a download statistics. Do we have that?

su_v and Adib,
I've got the project meta data already.
I've got all stats and files downloading to the webserver. I'm going to find a good place to put them.
No one need worry about the data being lost forever.
As for being scared by SF's wrapping. We can not let ourselves be harried by bullies and people who see no issue in abuse. This is why we must extract ourselves from them.

Status Update:
49,207 files have been downloaded. 100 downloads themselves and 49,107 per day stat json files going from the original upload date until yesterday.
The rss feed only contained 100 items. I could expand it by grinding a few other rss feeds from specific directories, or we could settle for the 100 last uploaded files which go back to 0.48.2 (2011-08-14)
Is this enough or do we want more?

Ideally we want it all. It's good to have a clear historic view. At the least, I would personally like to see it go back to 0.44. That's just me, but I figure it's worth saying.

Hi Friends, While I don't have much to do with programming and development, and don't have much need to save old files, I think keeping some sort of history of Inkscape's development should be important for the community of any project of Inkscape's caliber. Unfortunately, since I don't have have any kind of training or experience with keeping the history (or archive or library), of any organization or community (whether proprietary or open source), I can't offer any ideas. But I agree with ~suv that something important will be lost on June 14, unless we can come up with some way to retain this historical info. (And I also agree, having just come across this article the other day: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/05/sourceforge-grabs-gimp..., that leaving them unattended on SF is NOT a good idea.) Given my lack of experience with this sort of thing, the only thing I can think of, would be finding place to keep the files (where they won't be "adopted" by SF) and writing some sort of text document, that includes the dates they were originally uploaded, which also links to those files, wherever they end up being stored. That's probably quite a naive thought, but the best I can think of. It's simple enough that I could do it, and I would volunteer to write such a document, if that's the only way. But there probably is a much better way, that I'm just not aware of.
All best, brynn

Unfortunately, since I don't have have any kind of training or experience with keeping the history (or archive or library), of any organization or community (whether proprietary or open source), I can't offer any ideas. But I agree with ~suv that something important will be lost on June 14, unless we can come up with some way to retain this historical info. (And I also agree, having just come across this article the other day:
http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/05/sourceforge-grabs-gimp... ,
that leaving them unattended on SF is NOT a good idea.) Given my lack of experience with this sort of thing, the only
thing
I can think of, would be finding place to keep the files (where they
won't
be "adopted" by SF) and writing some sort of text document, that includes the dates they were originally uploaded, which also links to those files, wherever they end up being stored. That's probably quite a naive thought, but the best I can think
of.
It's simple enough that I could do it, and I would volunteer to write
such a
document, if that's the only way. But there probably is a much better
way,
that I'm just not aware of.

If there are any objections please raise them here and I won't go ahead with the proposed deletion.
If SF continues its current track, I also wonder whether this action won't backfire later on - as in serving as perfect argument for SF to create their own “mirror” for Inkscape packages (based on http://sourceforge.net/mirror/ ), and to enable the "enhanced-installer-with-payload" wrapper for Windows and OS X
downloads
at will, without the project having any control over the download links and the files hosted in that “mirror”.
This cleanup is mostly to reduce our online search footprint, reduce confusion with users and prevent users getting hold of old, obsolete or buggy versions of inkscape. (I've mentioned this cleanup before, but I wanted to be more proactive and state that I'll do it and take responsibility)

I think it worth to leave old versions of Inkscape on SF, but explicitly and publicly deny SF stuff from "picking up" and injecting adware into archived versions. Perhaps renaming it to pre-2015 Inkscape releases would be sufficient.

I'll be honest, there's nothing of value to the project leaving them on SF if we have all the data. After SF changed into it's current unrecognizable state, I don't think they deserve to have anything of ours and I feel it's unethical putting our users at risk by letting them remain relevant to the project.

For me it's about brand footprint. Having vestages of the project flapping about on google is not great. The more we can reduce, then better the outcome.
There may be some other things we can do, checking the website for links to sourceforge for example. Checking links online that link to sourceforge/inkscape pages and asking them to be changed. That's something anyone here or on the users list could help with. Just search for the sourceforge inkscape page in quotes in google and contact any of the non-sourceforge pages to ask for an edit.
As for the file meta data. I got the created date/time stamps all in the rss feed files. So that should be fine.

I've just done that for inkscape.org (and removed some parts from older FAQ translations, referring to Mac OS Panther, because of this. Mailing list links will need to be replaced later).
What should replace this text on the download page?: ---------------------------------- Compiled Packages
If you don't want to compile the code yourself, use the nightly build for your system. During final stages of a new release process you may happen to find compiled development packages on the Sourceforge Downloads page. ---------------------------------
(The wiki is full of references to sf, of course...)

replace sourceforge with website downloads page. It's likely we'll have a development release page.

Adapted for 8 languages. Thank you! (replaced with 'this page', actually, until we have the 'releases' from Jabiertxo)
