Staging website - graphics sources
As I've worked piecemeal through small content updates on the staging.inkscape.org website I seen we need new graphic assets, especially for homepage banners, screenshots, and community gallery areas. The gallery on the existing website has operated as a timeline of version development and features. I think the new website gallery could be presented more as an showcase of artwork/design. But where should these images come from so this can be populated?
My query in simple form is: from where should we source images for the new staging website? And how should permission-seeking work for using others' art?
I've compiled below some areas where I see this could be crowd-sourced.
Sources already linked within Inkscape webpages: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Created_with_Inkscape http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Galleries http://inkscape.deviantart.com/favourites/
There has been a lot of great examples of vector graphics creation through Inkscape posted socially online. I consider this a great choice in how we could populate our Gallery in our staging website. Here are some examples. https://plus.google.com/u/0/+inkscape/posts https://plus.google.com/u/0/118402182869057763137/posts http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewforum.php?f=8&sid=3e55a03d23c1acdbf67a9... [facebook is a page also, but doesn't seem to attract the same activity of art postings)
Most artists seem to be very willing to share their art publicly. But again, what is the best manner (existing method?) of posting these on our websites with appropriate credit/permission?
I appreciate any feedback, and then I'm willing to work at bringing our site to life a little more with these graphics.

Hey Jared,
The gallery plugin I'm using on the staging website is not shaping up to provide the kinds of functionality that we need. So it'll be removed.
But in it's place we have a choice of what to do. I think I may have to code a gallery type plugin from scratch, so using external sources directly might be an option we want to consider.
I can for-see a situation where perhaps by script.cron or perhaps on request, we grab posts from the right places, save thumbnails and link directly to the targets. We can then take in from different places lots of art.
Martin,
I like that direction, I'll consider how that could be implemented too. BTW, I mention all this because I'm not an artist myself, bit I appreciate seeing what's being created out there.

Martin,
Jared,
The deed is done, if you check http://staging.inkscape.org/en/community/gallery/ you'll find my new brochure django-cms plugin being used. It pulls in an rss feed, allows you to control how indexed entries are enabled from different sources.
I've tested both deviantArt and openClipart rss feeds so far.
Each entry links directly back to their real locations. Only thumbnails are saved.

That's wonderful! And I think that works well currently.
[minor typo? "From deviantArt Inkscape User" to "From deviantArt Inkscape Users", I can't edit the plugin myself to adjust that.]
I'd like to add hi-res banners to the homepage, under Gallery and Learning Resources, possibly Features too.

Actually that's not a typo. Look at the link, those images are from the Inkscape 'user' on deviantArt. They have a fravorites gallery that they add inkscape works to. So it's a curated gallery.
I'd like to add hi-res banners to the homepage, under Gallery and Learning Resources, possibly Features too.
Not sure what you mean. I'm going to add the permissions to edit these galleries to any editor.

I looked at google, their policy for excluding programmers from their APIs and making sure no data is available in a machine readable way makes it impossible to get data from there for now.
Martin,
That makes sense now about the deviantArt user.
The banner space I'm wanting to fill is the homepage tab backgrounds for Features, Gallery, and Learning Resources. The overview/default one is already filled with a great one, but I'd like to see the other ones filled the same way.
Because I'm not pushing out high quality art like I'm seeing other users I'd like to feel out if we can source some of these other pieces on our site. I don't know the history with rebirthart who designed the default banner. But if something else is already in the pipeline for landing in those spots, that's fine too.

Oh those! I've never thought of them as banners. Just example artwork decorating our 4 sections.
those have been kinda hard to fit into the cms of the site actually. Each of the 4 content blocks are cms slots ready for any kind of content, but have obviously applied styles from the css of the theme. The images themselves are set via the css too, so any changes would have to come from updated code/branch.

There is no existing person on this job and it desperately needs doing. If you do it, I will give you 3 huzzahs and 1 woah awesome. You can get a 'jolly good fellow' by editing the content in the cms blocks too ;-)

Great! Perhaps I'll wait for a day when I'm feeling a little down, that would be a great pick-me-up. :)

Sorry, but I don't see how showing arbitrary images on our website is going to benefit the project.
