Calluna Regular, which is currently in use on the website is a commercial font. While it's true that the regular version is offered under a free license, it is not offered under an OFL license, and what's a bit worse, is not licensed at all for use in documents, etc. (only desktop/web, and some sites want to sell a web license for it, which is worrying).
So... heh.
Anyone want me to work on finding alternatives for that one too? We pretty much need to.

Thanks for the offer! Yes of couse!
In the same thing, TO ME the jump between the first step, whith a lot of fonts, to the next set of fonts, become in lot of fonts not well reviewed, some one better than the final one selected.
I think is better a first small set of fonts, you need your "artist" side or we can create a group to select them.
Is a good idea give +1, but how mach people see carefuly all fonts in the first seletion page you make? A small set of fonts give a better comparation betwen them. This selection could be better is tou can view two fonts at the same time.
All the best, Jabier.

Yes, it may be that there is one close enough to just use in place of it as well. I'll let you know, and yes, narrow the fonts down a lot more beforehand. Thanks for the input. :)

I think that when you said "commercial" you actually meant "proprietary" (not libre)... Even though it may sound like a minor detail, I stress that because libre fonts can very easily have a commercial aspect (i.e. type designers being paid to improve them) without affecting their freedom aspects.

Yes, that's what I meant, thanks for the correction.

I agree. I'll be more careful in the future. :) It was not lack of knowing, it was being in too much of a rush. Thanks again for the correction.

Hey CR,
It would be good if we could vote on-site rather than via email. Do you have anything like that?
If not, you could upload each svg to inkscape.org and ask people to star the ones they like. (at least it would encourage people to get more familiar with the gallery system) :-)

I'll look into it. I think rather have something off-site for voting. Hesitant to spam the gallery with stuff, or encourage people to use it as a scratch-pad for voting. :) There are some free websites that handle voting. I'll have a look at those.

What do you think about Linux Libertine? It's also a serif typeface and it has the right type of license for this project.
Personally I think that it would make not only a great font for the brand but also for headlines and titles in the website if we find a nice sans serif font to pair to it for the rest of the contents.
The current Ubuntu font is too... Ubuntu. It's not a bad font, but I think it doesn't look right in the site. It has way too much personality.

I support this choice. Linux Libertine has a very good coverage of accented Latin letters. This may not be a very big deal for the "Draw Freely" font but becomes very important on the website, which is multilingual.

Yes, Linux Libertine is very close to Calluna (especially the "C" glyph). Additional benefit of this font set is it includes a set of keyboard glyphs which will be very useful for the tutorials.

If we would like to keep the original font appearance, I don't think this needs a community vote. This is also going in my personal 50 essential open fonts list, so thanks Gez, for the tip! :)
The only /slight/ issue is that the kerning needs a bit of work. Fortunately, since it's an open font, we can fix it. :)
All in favour of making Linux Libertine the official Inkscape font in place of the proprietary Calluna Regular?

So you'd fix the font and then upstream the changes and we'd keep a copy on the website?

Yes.
Should we offer more than just the ttf on the website? The existing font has svg, eot and woff files.
Martin,
So you'd fix the font and then upstream the changes and we'd keep a copy on the website?
Yes. To be honest, it's good enough for general use right now. It's not perfect, but we can manually kern it in the official Inkscape logo (which can/should be svg btw). I will need time to modify the font, but I want to get the video tutorials up and going first, if that's alright.

That makes 4. :)

Sure, why not. :)

That wouldn't be necessary. There are CSS3 features for kerning that could be used to fix the problematic kerning pairs without touching the font, avoiding the need of editing and synchronizing changes upstream. I'm quite new to this as I'm just starting to use those features, but I had success fixing some of those problems in a couple of websites I'm working on.
I'm not sure about how good is the browser support for these features, but as far as I could see, the current verions of the major browsers do support them. For old versions of browsers and browsers that not abide to standards I think there are worse problems than a slightly bad kerned webfont, so I wouldn't worry too much about how the logo looks there.

Did you consider to use 'Linux Libertine Display' instead?
At least in Inkscape (0.91, trunk), the kerning of 'INKSCAPE' is basically identical to how it renders with 'Calluna' - 'Linux Libertine Display' seems slightly lighter though. Note that I did not test/verify appearance in browsers.
If acceptably close in appearance, this would make it unnecessary to either create a fork of the 'Linux Libertine' font with custom kerning under a different name (important, AFAIU), or to hold back usage on inkscape.org until upstream decided on whether or not a modification of the kerning (for the specific use case in the 'Inkscape' logo) is acceptible and compatible with other use cases of this font.
