hi all,
i have a query about the _official_ user docs for inkscape.
i am wondering if it is being developed actively at the moment, and if it is, how do i help out? i have found bits of information about it on the wiki, however it refers to the docbook files in the CVS. i cannot seem to find these files in SVN. is the docbook stuff ancient history? if so would it be feasable to use the wiki as a collaboration tool for developing the official user docs more? sorry if this is all in the wiki somewhere, but the details (to me at least) seem a bit sketchy and spread out a bit...
cheers,
ryanlerch
The two "most" official bits are the tutorials and the book, both linked from help menu.
The book lives on its own site and has a single author.
The tutorials are indeed in DocBook, from which SVG and HTML formats are generated. You are welcome to help out on these - fixes, additions, new tutorials, anything. The command to get the sources and scripts is:
svn checkout https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/inkscape/doc-docbook/trunk inkscape

Do you omit mentioning http://www.angelfire.com/mi/kevincharles/inkscape/index.html unintentionally? :)

Totally forgot. Is it being actively worked on?
I'm very surprised to read that since i'm working in a help content since the firstdays of inkscape. See user_manual branch of the SVN. It is not the first time i notice it is forgotten. So the real question is : should i keep loosing time in maintaining it if the team and the users don't use it.

Cedric,
The only way to help people appreciate your work is to get acknowledged ;-)
If we take a look at http://www.inkscape.org/doc/index.php?lang=en, we won't see mentioning User manual by you, only "user manual by Kevin Wixson" that isn't even hosted at inkscape.org.
I suggest two things:
1. Host HTML version of your user manual at inkscape.org 2. Fix http://www.inkscape.org/doc/index.php?lang=en to mention a) availability of docs b) ways to contribute to them.

Sorry, I didn't mean to dismiss you at all. I just was not aware of your work. It's not mentioned or linked in the most obvious places. I do not claim deep knowledge of the goings on in this area, I just listed what's on the surface (i.e. in the Help menu).
Im prepared to help work on an _official_ version of the user docs... IMO, using the SVN and docbook format for developing something like an entire user manual may be a bit daunting for an artist or a non-dev type person that may want to contribute to user docs for inkscape - that is why i suggested maybe using the wiki for a development space of the docs, (with a strict template structure that would allow for easy conversion into the docbook format.)
that way, pretty much anyone can help out an official inkscape manual just from their browser.
cheers,
ryanlerch

Is Kevin's manual available for reuse as open source? If so, it seems like it would make sense to merge it with Gemy's work to provide an official manual.
Can you show this template that can export docbook? If that's easy for us to add to the Inkscape wiki, you're right that it could be a useful way to handle editing.
Bryce
No problem,
it's just to know what to do. I'll mention it in the right places. Cheers
