Participation in LGM [Design]
Hi everyone!
Since this year is the LGM and the hackfest it could be a good moment to meet personally with some of you and talk/learn about the Inkscape interface design.
In a conversation with Ilmari, from the LibreOffice team, he pointed out that they currently have a design team with great results. A design team could (should!) also include developers, who like to hack on the UI and how functionality is presented to the user.
We are also part of the Open Source Design community with tons of designers with interest in contributing but have little idea on how to start contributing to projects like Inkscape. This Design team could help new contributors to be useful on the current development.
We really want to contribute to Inkscape with our skills :)
Do you think it would be good to create an official Design team inside Inkscape?
In a conversation with Jabier he suggested us to meet in the hackfest in Leeds, we are a group of 2-3 designers going to the LGM and, if you think it would be useful to meet in the hackfest, we could make it to Leeds on 13th (arriving 12th night).
Thanks, looking forward to meet at the LGM!

I think it would be a great idea. I've been trying different design ideas and would like more people to be able to review and plan out design.

I'll be at the hackfest and LGM this year.
One thing we could do as a practice is design a new xml editor. It's sort of out the way for most users and so isn't critical, but at the same time is desperate for attention.
Interested in sitting down and doing a practice run in person?
Martin Owens,

Sure! Ill be happy to help and I really would love to see a new XML editor. :)
About your travel, to me seems very good you take free time to came to
the hackfest one day, thanks, anyway, this is only an idea i send to you, the question to the comunity: Whats the opinion about 2-3 people came to hackfest? We can close it?,? If anybody think is better meet us on LGM we can search for a convenient place/time to do it.
Agree! I was just asking the community whether it would be better to meet at the hackfest or not. Seems that Hackfest was a more focused environment for Inkscape conversations. Anyway, we can meet at the LGM as well if the community prefers, I don't want to disturb any scheduled meeting. Should we go to the hackfest or better to meet at LGM?
Thanks for your encouragement!

Martin Owens,
Was at the LGM facilities yesterday. It's absolutely astounding what they have for us. There is ample room for a group meeting, stairs with beanbag chairs everywhere, and they have small private presentation rooms, each with a big flat-screen television with laptop connection. Let me know if we'd like to ask to book one of them.
Im back there this weekend learning how to command the av control room. I'll get some pictures. :)

This is a great idea! Having a design team will help insure that Inkscape has a well thought out, consistent interface. The team could help answer questions from developers on how to present new functionality in Inkscape. A few tasks for the team come to mind immediately: 1. Organize, summarize, prioritize, and make recommendations from all the existing suggestions for improvements to the Inkscape GUI. There are quite a few wiki pages dealing with user interface under the "User Interface Discussion" and "Developer Discussion" topics at: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Inkscape 2. The Text toolbar and Text dialogs could use some help. For example, there are too many entries in the Text toolbar. 3. The Tool sidebar could use some help. It is getting too many entries.

Having said that, you are most welcome to come to the Inkscape hackfest on the 13th. I'll need to know how many will be attending for a lunch/snack count (lunch is catered by the venue). Thanks, looking forward to meet at the LGM!

Great! We could start small, learning how GTK works and *pair-designing* new modules with the developers. I like the idea of organizing current existing suggestions. We could also get in touch with other design teams to learn from them.
If you think there is plenty time for a talk about this in the LGM and there are meeting rooms as C said, i think it will be enough to meet in London, and maybe in the future we can be part of the hackfest as an interface team. :)
C, could we book a meeting room at LGM for this?
Thanks!

She has asked for days and times we want to use it for Inkscape discussions, so we need to make a decision fast. :)

Hi,
Thanks a lot for taking the time to help!
I think it would be enough 1 hour for a small presentation-conversation to see if we all agree on how can we contribute. We could have more conversations, if needed, during the event. Maybe booking two hours to ensure that we have plenty time but setting a 1h meeting?
About the days, we are flexible with times so depends on who wants to participate in the meeting and their schedules. Inkscape dev team at LGM will be probably more busy so we could adapt better. As a tentative, on Saturday there are some slots that can be useful:
- There is one hour between the Parallel Sessions 13.00 and the 15.00 break that could fit (two hours if we miss this parallel sessions) - Between the Lightning Talks at 16.40 and 18.00 future of LGM.
What do you think? Thanks again C!

C, could we book a meeting room at LGM for this?
Hi, sorry for the late response, it's been absolutely mad trying to prep for the event. I will pass along the question to Laura, my contact at the University.
How long would we like to book for, and on which days?
Thanks. :)

This is a great idea! Having a design team will help insure that Inkscape has a well thought out, consistent interface. The team could help answer questions from developers on how to present new functionality in Inkscape.
A few tasks for the team come to mind immediately:
- Organize, summarize, prioritize, and make
recommendations from all the existing suggestions for improvements to the Inkscape GUI. There are quite a few wiki pages dealing with user interface under the "User Interface Discussion" and "Developer Discussion" topics at:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Inkscape
- The Text toolbar and Text dialogs could use some help.
For example, there are too many entries in the Text toolbar.
- The Tool sidebar could use some help. It is getting too
many entries.
In a conversation with Jabier he suggested us to meet in the hackfest in Leeds, we are a group of 2-3 designers going to the LGM and, if you think it would be useful to meet in the hackfest, we could make it to Leeds on 13th (arriving 12th night).
From past experience, there is plenty of time at LGM for meetings. Having said that, you are most welcome to come to the Inkscape hackfest on the 13th. I'll need to know how many will be attending for a lunch/snack count (lunch is catered by the venue).
There is a talk schedule at LGM on Sunday about designing an Opentype Features UI that might be quite interesting.
Likewise, looking forward to meeting you and your colleagues,
Tav
Thanks, looking forward to meet at the LGM!
Xavi

Okay, I'll ask Martin for final approval, then ask Lara for these times today:
- There is one hour between the Parallel Sessions 13.00 and the 15.00 break that could fit (two hours if we miss this parallel sessions) - Between the Lightning Talks at 16.40 and 18.00 future of LGM.
Do we want it just Saturday, or multiple days?
Here is a link to the schedule, for convenience: http://libregraphicsmeeting.org/2016/wp/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/LGM2016pr...
Lemme know. :)

Sounds good to me! I'll wait until the end of the day to see who else responds. I don't think a 2 hour window is going to put a cramp in anyone's style as far as the room is concerned. I would however like to confirm that there is interest enough in participation before I bug Lara. :)
Thanks!

Hi,
Thanks a lot for taking the time to help!
I think it would be enough 1 hour for a small presentation- conversation to see if we all agree on how can we contribute.
- There is one hour between the Parallel Sessions 13.00 and the
15.00 break that could fit (two hours if we miss this parallel sessions)
- Between the Lightning Talks at 16.40 and 18.00 future of LGM.
What do you think? Thanks again C!

I spoke to Lara, and there is one room that is not currently booked. We will have to get back to her quickly if we want to reserve it, though.
She has asked for days and times we want to use it for Inkscape discussions, so we need to make a decision fast. :)
