I have verified that you can use the pattern along path extension to do this.
Create a short horizontal segment the length you want each dash, then use pattern along path using: Copies: repeated Deformation: snake Space between: what ever you want the gaps between to be.
This will create a new group of dashed paths. Just delete the old one.
If someone wants to write an extension to "break a line into dashes" the best starting point would probably be the "add nodes" extension.

I am in need of a way to do a dashed path in inkscape. When I use the stroke to path it shows up on my SVG as a dashed path, but when it import that to my cutting machine it will cut as a regular path, not one that has holes in it. What I need is a single line with little pieces missing on the line. Does anyone know of an easy way to do this in inkscape?
