I am in need of a way to do a dashed path in inkscape. When I use the stroke to path it shows up on my SVG as a dashed path, but when it import that to my cutting machine it will cut as a regular path, not one that has holes in it. What I need is a single line with little pieces missing on the line. Does anyone know of an easy way to do this in inkscape?

The easiest way to do this, is really easy:
1. Give your path's stroke a color through the Fill & Stroke tool 2. Go to the Stroke Style tab and simply select something from the dashes drop down menu.
You can also configure stroke width and other options from the same tab.

Hello Bibi, - Are you using the Desktop Cutting Plotter output option to generate a .DXF file? - Are you using ROBO-Master to do the cutting? If both are "yes", then I might be able to help. Currently the .dxf output does not support line styles like dashed lines. However, it might be possible to do this. I would recommend submitting a bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape , where you could attach this request. Could you also attach a sample .svg file to that bug report, just to get an idea of what you are looking for?
Actually I have 4 cutters, and yes it does work with the Robomaster beautifully. I actually sell Sure Cuts Alot which allows you to cut to the Cricut machines, the ones that have the Cartridges, by purchasing that software you can cut an SVG file fomat, however, it is crude as opposed to the Robomaster, in that there are no line colors, also there is not any way in that software to do dashed lines. What I am looking for is a path, where the it is actually sliced, into real dashes, so that I can create files for that sofware, where it can score.

When I checked the help guide, there was so mention about Slicing, which is how I will have to get around this problem. I guess I need to know how to slice a path. Can anyone help me there? I got to the point where you add nodes and then it shows a little scissors, but I do not know where that tool is, or how to use it.

Weird, but as a workaround:
Export your drawing as bitmap, reimport it and use "Vectorize bitmap", a quick test here worked. But it should depend on the compexity of your drawing.

Hello Bibi, I guess I should clarify what can be done. If you are using the Desktop Cutting Plotter .dxf output, and if you need dashed lines in this output, then this could probably be done. If you are not using the .dxf output, then I wouldn't know how to help you. So would you like support for the .dxf output or is it the Sure Cuts a Lot software that needs support? I assume that these two methods probably have nothing in common.
I'm using the .dxf output and would very much like to have support for dashed lines in it.

I'm running RoboMaster 4.30. I've also run into another roadblock: I can't figure out how to transfer linestyle info from a .dxf file into RoboMaster. I can easily generate a .dxf file with some linestyle info in it, but my RoboMaster ignores this info. I can easily transfer color info in this way, but that's not very helpful. I'll try to find a newer version of RoboMaster and see if this helps. If not, then the only alternative is to develop a brand new extension as suggested by Rob A and Aaron S. This is clearly the best way to go, since it would benefit everybody, not just RoboMaster, but it's also more work, sigh...

I'm running RoboMaster 4.30. I've also run into another roadblock: I can't figure out how to transfer linestyle info from a .dxf file into RoboMaster. I can easily generate a .dxf file with some linestyle info in it, but my RoboMaster ignores this info. I can easily transfer color info in this way, but that's not very helpful. Thanks for the link. I did a bit of reading of the documentation of ROBO Master. As far as I can tell, the cutting process in ROBO Master is controlled by a dialog box called 'Cutline Settings'. In this dialog box they allow you to associate a dashed- or solid- line style with a line color, and you only have 2 linestyles to choose from, athough you can have as many colors as you like. In any event, I know that it is feasible to transfer color information into ROBO Master from a dxf file, so I will try to incorporate some kind of limited color information transfer (maybe 6 colors) into the Desktop Cutting Plotter .dxf output, to help with the linestyle problem. As for a full blown general solution, that will have to go on the "todo" list.
Are you sure that you've converted the stroke to a path? I don't understand how this would still cut a solid line, as the line data is no longer there (just the outlines of the "bits" that are left).
Did you try exporting as a plain svg file?

Stroke to path will result in tiny little rectangles, one for each dash, because the cutter follows the paths. What needs to be done is process the line style and remove alternating portions of the path so that there are tiny path segments for each dot or dash. I believe this is the method Alvin will be pursuing.

Sorry I have not been on the forum for a few days, I went to teach classes on how to use inkscape to create cutter files. I actually had one lady just sit and cry, since I had told her that she could convert iris patterns using inkscape to cut on her Craft Robo. She had been trying to use Robomaster software, and it was not possible to do it that way, since she could not remove internal lines that she needed to do. Inkscape did a great job at it.
I have the Robomaster cutter and the dashed lines are fine there, I use the DXF Format for that machine and I set the line to dashed in that program.
My problem comes in the SVG format, it is for use with the Cricut machine, using the Sure Cuts Alot software. which does not have a select by color or dashed line option. And on the drive back yesterday, I realized that I probably did not use the stroke to path, however, as Arron pointed out that would cut a little box, instead of a dash, and that may be a problem, I will try it later this afternoon, as I have jury duty today.
Also, two other problems, One is the toggle from outline mode to normal mode. I was teaching some gals who had Vista operating systems and we installed Inkscape.46 and the toggle (Control + keypad number 5) was not working. I use inksape 46 and XP and it works fine. Can anyone shed some light on why it does not work in Vista?
Next problem, when importing a PDF some seem to have masks, I can seem the images, but cannot get to them to trace them. Is there anyway to "break" apart a masked pdf image?

I have verified that you can use the pattern along path extension to do this.
Create a short horizontal segment the length you want each dash, then use pattern along path using: Copies: repeated Deformation: snake Space between: what ever you want the gaps between to be.
This will create a new group of dashed paths. Just delete the old one.
If someone wants to write an extension to "break a line into dashes" the best starting point would probably be the "add nodes" extension.

In svn rev 21045, I've added support for 6 colors in the Desktop Cutting Plotter DXF output. (Black, plus R,G,B,C,M,Y). This should allow for the use of the Cutline Settings dialog in File | Output Settings in ROBO Master.
a proposal has been made at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/374574 for a new Python extension to cut the paths according to the dashed pattern used in the Stroke Style dialog. The source code (2 files, one .py and one .inx) is available at that location, for anyone that would like to try it. It needs to go into the directory C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share\extensions, and on the menu it is located at Extensions | Modify Path | Convert to Dashes.
Note that this procedure is destructive, you will not be able to edit the paths after this. Well, you can maybe use Edit | Undo..., but it would be best to save your work before doing this. Also, before using this procedure, you should normally use the procedure Path | Object to Path.

Hi, there are 2 files, convert2dashes.py and convert2dashes.inx. I'll attach them here as well. With the .inx file you may have to be careful that the name does not get changed on a download. I'm running Windows and sometimes I see that an .inx file will get automatically renamed to be .xml. Anyways, so you may need to double-check the name to confirm it is still correct.
On a Windows machine they go into the directory C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share\extensions\ . On a Mac it might be different, it might be /Inkscape/extensions/share/ In any event it will be the same directory where there are many other .py files like addnodes.py for example. hth, Alvin
