Inkscape flowed text (e.g. text in a shape) uses a feature that was included in the SVG 1.2 standard. The 1.2 standard was never officially adopted and only Inkscape and I believe Batik implemented the flowed text feature. Inkscape flowed text can be converted to normal SVG text (Text->Convert to Text). No browser implements all of the SVG 1.1 spec so it is possible to find things that render properly in Inkscape but not a browser (e.g. superscripts in Firefox). There are also a handful of hidden features that rely on SVG 2 which are not yet supported in browsers. A normal user shouldn't come across these.
