I've been using Inkscape on Windows for some time, and everything worked fine. Now that I've switched to Linux, I've noticed that the Inkscape window is bigger than my screen! Resizing doesn't help - it lets me expand the window all I want, but not compress it beyond the default size. Maximising doesn't help either - the window remains at exactly the same size. I'm working at an 800×600 resolution, both in Windows and in Linux. When switching to 1024×768 the problem vanishes. But I can't always work at that resolution - my poor little screen was not designed for such abuse, so I can't distinguish any details at 1024×768.
What can I do about this problem?

I'm pretty sure that the toolbars are the problem. If you float the toolbars, you should be able to resize the main window. You can also disable them via the View-->Show/Hide menu.
But I can't always work at that resolution - my poor little screen was not designed for such abuse, so I can't distinguish any details at 1024×768.
I'm guessing it's a monitor problem, not an Inkscape zoom problem, but just in case... You know you can zoom in Inkscape with Ctrl+Scrollwheel, right?

My monitor is working fine. Most other Linux programs are working fine. Inkscape under Windows is working fine. Only Inkscape under Linux is broken.

Can you put them on a virtual screen? Then you just swap between with a keyboard sortcut. I've got 5 of them, assigned to F1-F5

I think he might mean multiple workspaces. Here's a Novell article I hit on my first page of Google results http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/11690.html that explains their configuration of multiple workspaces.

Hmm.... you might have to ask him. Personally since I'm more of a spacial thinker, I just use Ctrl-Alt-arrow (up, down, left or right) to move between them.

And... when is that likely to happen?
We just released 0.44 pre 2 tonight.
Things seem to be on track, so we're probably talking in the neighborhood of days to a week or two here.

Sorry, I thought you were asking if I *could*. I can also zoom in/out with the +/- keys. But that's not the problem with 1024×768 - it's that I can't distinguish any details, be it in Inkscape or in any other program. In particular, text is unreadable. That's why I'm stuck with 800×600.

Now I have a bigger problem: I tried reloading a file on a window in which I had floating toolbars, and they vanished. The View->Show/Hide menu, in which they all appear as visible, doesn't solve anything.
What can I do now?

Did you try if you can get them back with Alt-Tab (pressing them at the same time)? Usually it's for switching between applications, but it might work here too.
About virtual screens (workspaces) : they're really handy in any decent OS (one of the reason I always feel disabled when I'm in front of a Windows machine), and for artist they're great. With Gimp, you have your blank page filling the screen, and then with a key you go to a workspace where you have all the tools options.
I deleted your first post, so I don't know if you said it or not, but which Linux distribution and window manager are you using (gnome, kde, wmaker, etc...)? If you don't know how to use them, we can help you. That way you'll never go back to Windows :)
I just tried with Inkscape 0.44 (last autopackage) and you have to make the toolbars floating, then move your window to another workspace (try to right click on the window's title bar. Works with wmaker and gnome, maybe also KDE). The toolbars stays on the first workspace, even when you change tools.
So, definitely, that would be your solution.
