I developed problems loading any version of Inkscape on Windows XP. Suspecting a trojan issue, I rebuilt the entire system. Inkscape 0.40 now loads correctly but not 0.41. The error message reads:
"One or more extensions failed to load:
The failed extensions have been skipped. Inkscape will continue to run normally but those extensions will be unavailable. For details to troubleshoot this problem, please refer to the error log located at: C:\Documents and Settings\Robert C. Smith\Application Data\Inkscape\extension-errors.log"
This is typical of the messages in the extension-log:
"Extension "GIMP Gradients" failed to load because a dependency was not met. Dependency:: type: plugin location: path string: gimpgrad"
Currently I am just running SP1, but the previous problem was with SP2. I am hoping to have Mandrake 10.2 running by tomorrow under a dual boot, but the problem stands. I presume it is a Windows issue.
Help! Robert
Its not a problem, it just means that some of the external apps used to allow access to other file formats are not installed. If you need access to any of those formats, it should tell you whats wrong, so you know where to start looking to fix it. If you dont need them, uncheck the show this dialog checkbox and ignore it.
Cheers

Thanks, John. ....However I am a somewhat puzzled in that this has never occurred before --- either with .39 or .40; that is until I stumbled into a nest of Trojans and watched my computer struggle for its life. I think that the machine is now clean .40 loads OK, but still not .41. The work-around is clear enough, but I don't understand the "external apps" bit. Are they missing from my machine or from the download? The Gimp is running flawlessly as are all of my other graphic programs.
I guess it is watch and see time. Thanks again. Cheers, RC

Hi Robert, It wouldnt appear in 0.39 or 0.40 as its a new dialog. It got introduced pretty late in the 0.41 dev cycle. Those extensions allow you to use some formats by using external programs to translate them into svg, if you'd tried using them in older versions, they either wouldnt have worked or just wouldnt have been loaded at all, this simply notifys you that their not available, and why. The messages mean that the apps needed to do the conversions havent been found on your system, but unless theres an external format there you need to read, it really doesnt matter for you.
Cheers
