Hi,
There is a publisher who is interested in the book that I have written (http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/index.php) but needs to be convinced that there is a real market for the book. In the proposal I have already quoted the growth in downloads from SourceForge and the inclusion of Inkscape in most major Linux distribution.
Can people on this list think of other ways to document Inkscape's growing popularity?
I believe I am up against poor performance of previous books on Open Source drawing programs (which may account for the fact that there are over 1000 Photoshop books versus about a dozen on Gimp, all but one published four or more years ago.
Thanks,
Tav

I don't know much about the gimp books, but it does seem like those would be useful data points. It might be worth adding that your work has been heavily reviewed by the community, and already has served as a critically important resource for many users.

there may well be a fair few pre orders waiting out here too :) As long as the price is reasonable I'll take one.

Even though inkscape is officially unstable and subject to change the lack of a stable 1.0 does cause difficulty for third parties trying to work with us as in this case. I expect the publishers would be very worried about newer versions of the software making the book less attractive and anything you could do to generalise and future-proof your writings would be wise.

There is a Dutch edition, too. Less frequent (10 issues a year). I have to check if Inkscape was indeed included in a 2006 issue.

Choosing a publisher is probably a lot more work than a non writer like me would guess. I'm guessing a publisher brings the benefits of marketing, proofreading and distribution. However, if you don't need those benefits, and were willing to take care of the marketing and proofreading yourself, you could go with a self publisher like Lulu.com.
You could let the book prove itself, rather than prove it to the publisher first.
Either way, I'll buy a copy when it's ready. :-)
Hi,
Thanks for all the very useful input!
In sifting through the input and in my own diggings around, I think the most interesting find is from the Debian "Popularity Contest" site (popcon.debian.org), pointed out to me by Colin Marquardt. A little filtering of the data shows that about 7% of Debian users who participate in the automatic poll (more than 12000 users) regularly use Inkscape. This number more than doubled in the past year and shows an exponential growth. The number of users who have Inkscape installed also is increasing rapidly, up to 30%. For comparison, Gimp usage is at about 20% and is relatively flat. xfig usage has dropped to less than 5%. A PNG graph of Inkscape's growth is attached.
See also: http://people.debian.org/~igloo/popcon-graphs/index.php?packages=inkscape (Turn on percentage to normalize the graph to the number of overall users.
