gradient mesh, multiple nodes, dropper tool
Hi Friends, Just playing with the new gradient mesh tool, to give feedback from a newbie (as opposed to professional or artist). Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, Inkscape 0.92pre3. After selecting multiple mesh nodes, I switch to the Dropper tool, so I can grab a color from an imported raster image. But as soon as I switch tools, only the last mesh node that was selected is still highlighted. So I can't color multiple mesh nodes at once, using Dropper tool. However, if I use just the palette to change the colors, that works as expected, to color multiple nodes at once. Should I make a bug report for this?
Thanks, brynn
Hi Brynn,
there's a button for this in the mesh tool's toolbar, it looks like the dropper tool and takes the color from under the selected nodes.
I know this isn't the same as the feature you're requesting, but it's an option.

Thanks Maren.
But no, it doesn't have the same result at all. I want to select multiple mesh nodes, and give them all the same color. I can use the palette, and that's what we'll have to use.
It's just to me, it seems intuitive to be able to select multiple mesh nodes, and use the Dropper tool to pick a color from a raster image.
Hhm, it seems both the wiki and website are offline at the moment. I'll have to look it up later. Should I make a post on the Docs list about the sites being down, or can you investigate from here?
Thanks, brynn

- Or Fill and Stroke dialog, I think. Or, silly way: draw a shape of the color you want below the nodes, then use the dropper icon, after selecting the nodes (or not, if you have the color you want below every node). Could be handy if you want to assign a couple of colors at once to a couple of nodes at once.
As for the feature request, you should probably rather ask on the devel mailing list, if it's possible to make the dropper tool work that way.

That button applies the color of whatever pixel is directly underneath the mesh node (or stop? for radial and linear gradients, the tiny diamond shapes are called stops, but I guess I'm not sure what to call them). I can see where it could be a helpful feature. But it's not what I need, in this case.
With the mesh, with the image I'm working on, there are areas where several stops need to be all the same color, and other areas where each one is different. I was just looking for a way to to set the same ones all at once.
For example, you can select multiple objects, and fill them all at once with the Dropper tool. Or if you have a complex radial or linear gradient, you can select multiple stops..... Ooohh....well, I just assumed it was possible to do this with regular gradients, but no, it doesn't work there either.
I guess it makes sense though. Because with those kinds of gradients, one normally doesn't need several stops the same color. But things are different with the mesh. Maybe this would be more of a feature request?
Anyway, thanks for your comments :-)

Hi. I discovered two work-arounds:
1.use the dropper to select a colour of the first node (since it still works on one node, then copy that node (ctrl+c) then select all other nodes you want to colour and ctrl+v. - This also works copying/pasting colour from another shape. 2. Switch to the eyedropper tool *first*, then select nodes you want to colour. Now you can colour them all with the eyedropper in just the way you want.
These of course are just work-arounds, and the feature suggested is an obvious good one. It will take some implementation though because I don't think it's currently possible to save a node group selection after switching tools. - Please do make a bug report for it.
Thanks! -C

Thanks C R. Yes, I was just thinking to make it a feature request.
I do understand how to copy/paste the hexcode, and that's probably the best solution. But I don't understand what you mean with #2. That's exactly what I want to do, but it doesn't work. So I'm clearly not understanding what you mean.
Oh, do you mean select them one at a time with the dropper tool (holding Shift)? I didn't try that yet. Let's see....
Oh yes, that does work! But still, the one at a time selection is what's time consuming. You can drag out a selection box with the mesh tool, and select several nodes/stops very quickly. I think I'll just make it a practice to copy the hexcode first, before I do the selection. At least until there's another way.
It will take some implementation though because I
don't think it's currently possible to save a node group selection after switching tools.
Of course I don't understand anything about the coding. But Inkscape remembers multiple object selections, when switching tools. I guess it must be a different story for gradient stops/nodes.

Thanks! -C

Thanks Maren.
But no, it doesn't have the same result at all. I want to select multiple mesh nodes, and give them all the same color. I can use the palette, and that's what we'll have to use.

Hhm, it seems both the wiki and website are offline at the moment. I'll have to look it up later. Should I make a post on the Docs list about the sites being down, or can you investigate from here?
- I got a couple of emails recently about something happening with the
server infrastructure on OSUOSL, so I wasn't surprised that the site was offline. If it's still offline in a couple of hours, Martin may need to investigate. I can't do anything about this.

Hi Brynn,
there's a button for this in the mesh tool's toolbar, it looks like the dropper tool and takes the color from under the selected nodes.
I know this isn't the same as the feature you're requesting, but it's an option.
See also the description of the tool in the Wiki: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Mesh_Gradients
Kind Regards, Maren
