How to archive an alpha fade out for an image
Hi all,
I'm very new to Inkscape and the possibilities that are made possible with a tools like this, so please forgive me if my question is obvious or otherwise stupid... But I have already searched for an answer to the following on the net and I cannot see how it is done.
I would basically like to archive the same "fade out" on a new image as seen on the attached image. If you put this picture on a dark background, you can see that it kind-of shines.
I have tried with the "Blur Egde" tool (as well as many other approaches, but none of these give me the same illusion.
So... how do you get the same effect? Is it possible at all?

The white halo looks like a copy of the main image colored in white, moved a little and with a heavy gaussian blur filter.

Unfortunately Inkscape has not yet the gaussian blur filter implemented (it is under active development and expected for the next version) so your best hope beside trying the SVN version is to simulate it somehow with "Blur Edge" and the likes. Or export the final image as PNG and add the glow with GIMP.
Nicu,
Thanks for the answer. Though I have to admit that some of you answer is gibberish to me :-)
I take it that the Blur Edge of 0.44 can't do the job.
Any idea about the timing of the next version? The roadmap doesn't tell.

I think you want something like this: http://gug.sunsite.dk/tutorials/cmarshall2/ only with a stronger, white shadow and in vector, not raster :p
I take it that the Blur Edge of 0.44 can't do the job.
Blur Edge can be used as a workaround in some cases instead of real blur

There are some features to be finished before the next release (with gaussian blur being one of them), I don't think anyone can give an exact date. You can compile yourself the latest version from Subversion and see exactly where is it (or try a not very up to date packaged version from the development branch: http://inkscape.org/download.php)
Nicu,
I might want to try out the developer version. How stable would you say it is? I don't might trying out beta or even alpha quality software, but I would hate to loose all my work...

Honestly, I should cover myself in shame and acknowledge I am running the stable version and can't comment on stability for devel :p
I think the current development version can be considered somewhere between alpha and beta (we don't have formal alpha and beta releases), but you should not worry about losing work: you can uninstall it and reinstall the stable version if needed.
Note: I toyed a little with Blur Edge and is possible to do something like the attached image (I know, not very good)
Thanks for all the help.
I'll give Blur Edge a second try. And wait for an official version :-}
