Hi all,
We've got several proposals in various states of discussion, which I think would be good to bring to a vote over the coming month.
In general do you guys prefer having a bunch of different things to vote on in one go, or to have them spaced out time-wise to permit deliberation?
Here's the topics I'm thinking we should vote on:
a. 2013 Developer Education Book Campaign
b. Funded Development Procedure
c. Job Exceptions for Priority Projects
d. Move Inkscape Board mailing list from SourceForge to Launchpad
Anything else that'll need votes?

Vote when a topic is ready.

1. SVG Working group meetings.
I would like funding to attend two SVG working group meetings. There are plans to hold one meeting before/after LGM (April 2-5, 2014 in Leipzig) and one before/after The Graphical Web/SVGOpen (August 27-30, 2014 in Winchester, England). This is a critical time for SVG 2. The new features I am responsible for include mesh gradients, hatched fills, and auto-flowed text. The move to "CSS based" text layout which brings in auto-flowed text requires a lot of work which is easiest to do face-to-face. I anticipate that I will get some funding support from the organizers of the conferences.
A report from the Tokyo WG meeting can be found at:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/blog/?p=979
2. LGM
I would like funding to cover a hotel at LGM. At the moment, I plan on giving an SVG 2 update, demoing the hidden SVG 2 festures in Inkscape.
I believe that nobody has stepped up to give an Inkscape talk at LGM. Should the board be more pro-active in recruiting someone to go? It may not be obvious to most developers that they can ask the board for funding.
3. Hack session
I would like to organize a hack session focused on adding a framework to Inkscape to handle SVG 2. Inkscape needs to be able to handle converting between SVG 1.1 and SVG 2 on read-in and write-out. This should be added in a generalized way.
SVG 2 offers quite a bit of new features to Inkscape. It is important that we show an interest in implementing these features if we want them to remain in SVG 2 and if we want others to support them. This is discussed in more detail on a Wiki page for this topic:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/SVG2
We would need to agree on a date, a place, who will/can participate, what expenses would be covered.
Here are some possible sites:
* At LGM (there is a place we can use before/after LGM). * At a Redhat office, Boston or Brno (Ted suggested this might be possible) * Chez moi, outside Paris.
4. Bug tracking recognition
We have just discussed books for developers, which not only should help the level of code in Inkscape but also can be seen as a token reward for our most active developers. I really would like to do something to recognize how much ~suv had contributed to Inkscape through her work on keeping our bug-tracker in order (and answering questions on IRC).

This sounds like an excellent idea for us to consider funding. Can you draft up a proposal (in the repository), including estimated costs and any deliverables from it (i.e. meeting reports, potential followup actions, etc.)?

Good questions. How do others feel?
Personally, I think we should support with funding both presenters and (perhaps to a lesser extent) attendees who have made important contributions to Inkscape (e.g. bug triagers, documentation, translators, etc.)

I really like this idea. I think we should fund it ONLY if a heavy degree of planning is done ahead of time, so-as to make maximal use of the face-to-face time.
Also, I think for this item we should really couple it to a fundraiser, because I think otherwise it risks depleting our reserves.

Agreed. Not just ~suv but also translators and others have done SO much to help support the project. I'm guessing none of them would care to have a programming book, though!
Suggestions for non-coder reward ideas?

Wonder if perhaps we could work out with Deviant Art to get a deal on some Premium memberships (or just pay them ourselves). But they seemed interested in working together.

All good ideas. I've seeded proposal pages for each of these three ideas in the board docs, as I think they're pretty close.

All three will require a "voting statement" made before we can vote (basically, turn the premise into a Yes/No question), as well as specifying any particulars like (estimated) costs, procedures, etc.

This one I think is totally cool, but needs to be more specifically defined before it's votable.

Tav, would you mind drafting up the three items above? I think you can commit directly to the board-docs bzr tree, if not let me know. I'll be available for proof-reading and copyediting as well.
Once they're ready, let me know and I'll run a vote.

I'll get to these soon. There is an SVG face-to-face meeting starting today that I need to prepare some things for. (I am not at the meeting so its more urgent that I get the stuff prepared on the web as there will be some discussions that will impact Inkscape... like a crazy proposal to remove the <symbol> element.)

Sounds good, thanks!

Hi,
I've updated the proposals on:
1. SVG Working group meetings 2. LGM 3. Hack session
I would like to gauge interest in LGM. I just sent out an email to the developer's mailing list.
The hack session probably needs some discussion before a vote.

Tav, I agree the hack session needs further discussion. Can you please post it as an [RFC] and solicit more opinions on it? Then let me know when you think it's ready for voting on.
