Inkscape 0.47pre2
Hello!
After too much delay, some for good and some for stupid reasons I've finally uploaded a pre2 source package for Inkscape. This is VERY close to the final 0.47 release so it's important that people pay attention and we don't let things fall through the cracks.

Hey Ted,
Thanks for doing this! For the record, I believe that the calligraphic-presets.h was created to make those translatable, as they weren't before. I may be wrong, but could swear that was why.
Cheers, Josh

I can't really look at this now as my laptop is in for repair, but I'd have to say that I'm a little concerned about an .h file that isn't included anywhere. There's probably a better fix.
What do the release managers want there, put the file back just to reduce risk or should we look for the "final fix"?

Yes, probably. I used a .h file because that's the way filters are also translated, and it was easy to set up. If .h is confusing in this case, we could find another file extension.

Okay, so looking into this a little, here's my understanding. (please correct me if I'm wrong).
In the preferences-skeleton.h there is a set of entries that correspond to the presets for the calligraphy tool. These entires contain user visible strings in them, for instance "Drop pen". Those entries are then manually copied to src/ui/dialogs/calligraphic-presets.h which gets picked up by gettext so that they get translated.
I guess the problem I see here is that there are user visible strings in the preferences file. I can't come up with a hard and fast reason that it's bad, but it definitely feels wrong. All the other asset based things filters, markers, etc. are in independent files. It seems like these should be as well. (that way we can have "Nicolas' pen pack" in the future also)
But, shorter term. I think that solution is to mark the strings in preferences-skeleton.h as translatable. Does anyone have issue with that?

I totally agree with you. We only need to find a solution for user created presets.

It's the first think I tried to do to fix the bug. But I found it cleaner to add a specific file.
Does anyone have issue with that?
No issue at all. Short term, we just need translatable strings. -- Nicolas
mingwenv.bat is still missing (sets up environment variables for building on Win32), and needs to be added to Makefile.am. Anyway, I'm building for Win32 now... who actually is meant to provide Win32 binaries? I can if you'd like. I will also be updating my Inkscape Portable package for a probably final test before 0.47 is released (and Inkscape Portable is planned to will be released almost simultaneously). I tried the bz2 version first, it didn't work properly (7-Zip was also complaining about overwriting things on a fresh extract) so I'm trying the zip version now. Barring problems, I expect to have uploaded Inkscape and Inkscape Portable builds within a few hours.

The sooner Win32/Mac builds are ready, the sooner we can announce pre2.

It would be great to have an official portable version!

OK, the zip version worked fine. However, in compiling the installer, I ran into a problem which I haven't experienced in the SVN version: File: failed opening file "....\inkscape\locale\az\LC_MESSAGES\inkscape.mo"
I checked up on this, it appears that az.po isn't being compiled by whatever handles it. I guess that this means that it's broken from a quick look at po/makefile.in.in. And yet Alexandre reports az.po's clean, and I was able to open it in Virtaal and Poedit.
What should I do? I can add a /nonfatal to the installer as a temporary fix so it'll just ignore it, but that's obviously not the best fix.

A quick reply on 0.47pre2 Win32 installer.
After running the installer I got a warning that previous version of Inkscape is already installed (see attached screenshot 1), but that file "Uninstal.dat" is missing. In my case the installer was pointing to the directory where I installed some development version with this "new" installer (I believe it was version "inkscape-win32-r22047" from " http://inkscape.chrismorgan.info/win32-builds/", but I'm not completely sure about the version).
However, I chose the same directory and in the next step it asked me if I want to uninstall the old version before I install this one (0.47pre2). I chose YES, and the old version was uninstalled, except the file "Uninstall.exe", which was left in the folder. But I think I had that folder opened in Total Commander, and this might be the reason that this file wasn't deleted. Furthermore, I have also noticed that the uninstallation deleted uninstall entries in "Add or Remove Programs" for the official 0.46 version. The program files however were of course still installed in Program Files and everything was working.
Anyway, then it started installing version 0.47pre2 and I got warning that the chosen folder is not empty (see 2nd screenshot). Than no matter what I clicked (CANCEL or RETRY), nothing happened, i.e. it didn't install nor cancel the installation (the info box stayed on the screen even after several clicks). The only thing that helped was manually deleting file "Uninstall.exe" in the installation folder, and the installation went on without problems.
These are my experiences, but at the end basically everything works as expected.
Regards, Rok

Yes this is a hm issue in the uninstaller of the 0.46 version. It should delete nicely by himself.
However if you install inkscape in a new and fresh directory there will be no harm. The windows registry only remembers the last installed position.

I'm going to have a look at this when I get round to it. I'm not expecting it to be very difficult to fix. I've just been catching up with a lot of PortableApps.com work recently (mainly releases for Inkscape Portablehttp://portableapps.com/node/19503, gVim Portable and Data Crow Portable) but am now finished with that rush.

However if you install inkscape in a new and fresh directory there will be no harm. The windows registry only remembers the last installed position.

A quick reply on 0.47pre2 Win32 installer.
After running the installer I got a warning that previous version of Inkscape is already installed (see attached screenshot 1), but that file "Uninstal.dat" is missing. In my case the installer was pointing to the directory where I installed some development version with this "new" installer (I believe it was version "inkscape-win32-r22047" from "http://inkscape.chrismorgan.info/win32-builds/", but I'm not completely sure about the version).
However, I chose the same directory and in the next step it asked me if I want to uninstall the old version before I install this one (0.47pre2). I chose YES, and the old version was uninstalled, except the file "Uninstall.exe", which was left in the folder. But I think I had that
folder
opened in Total Commander, and this might be the reason that this file wasn't deleted. Furthermore, I have also noticed that the uninstallation deleted uninstall entries in "Add or Remove Programs" for the official
0.46
version. The program files however were of course still installed in
Program
Files and everything was working.
Anyway, then it started installing version 0.47pre2 and I got warning
that
the chosen folder is not empty (see 2nd screenshot). Than no matter what
I
clicked (CANCEL or RETRY), nothing happened, i.e. it didn't install nor cancel the installation (the info box stayed on the screen even after several clicks). The only thing that helped was manually deleting file "Uninstall.exe" in the installation folder, and the installation went on without problems.
These are my experiences, but at the end basically everything works as expected.
Regards, Rok

I've been using the build : inkscape.chrismorgan.info/win32-builds/Inkscape-0.47pre2-1.exe. and it is working very well for me, thanks Chris!
The only 'issue' I've seen is that it apparently does not include the Python packages 'PIL' and 'uniconvertor', which I think would normally be present in a Windows installation.

I'm working on a universal package that will run on Leopard and Snow Leopard.
I don't think it is worth creating another gtk-native-mac build, unless anyone wants to start actively working on the things I mentioned about the one I made for pre0 -- the gtk-native-mac version is going to require a fair amount of attention before it can become the main supported one over the x11-based version.
Work on the universal x11-based package for Mac is a little slow... partly because I am quite busy with work, and partly because of the added complication of testing an additional version of the operating system (Snow Leopard 10.6).
Anyway, Mac builds are coming and haven't been forgotten. If anyone else with mac packaging experience wants to contribute to the effort, it would be useful to look at some of the outstanding issues I haven't got to yet, like the dictionary bundling or the DBUS bundling/startup (might be similar to what GIMP has). If so, let me know.
Cheers, Michael

Also... is there anyone out there who can look into doing a build of 0.46 for Snow Leopard?
At the moment it seems to be broken. However, if we can get the older 0.46 working on Snow Leopard, then we can one-up some of the current commercial companies who have declared no ongoing support for older versions of the software.
Of course, I'm not suggesting we take away from getting 0.47 out. It is just that we have a nice window of opportunity to show why Open Source in general can be better than proprietary.

1) I have had a look at the spell check dictionary issue, but got stuck when it seemed to fail in an area outside of my abilities (C++ code reading $ASPELL_CONF to get the list of available spell check dictionaries for the 'Spell Check' page in the preferences dialog)
Bug #396322 in Inkscape: “Spell checker crashes the OS X package”: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/396322
2) GIMP on OS X: dbus-binaries are included in the application bundle and called by the launcher script before exec'ing gimp-bin
launcher scripts in the app-skeleton: http://gimponosx.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gimponosx/Gimp-app-template/Contents/Resources/bin/gimp?revision=6&view=markup http://gimponosx.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gimponosx/Gimp-app-template/Contents/Resources/bin/gimp-remote?revision=6&view=markup
MacPorts configuration and portfiles+patches for gimponosx: http://gimponosx.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gimponosx/GimpPorts/
Script files for building & bundling http://gimponosx.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gimponosx/scripts/
I do not have a lot of MacPorts experience and haven't built GIMP myself, but it seems important to note that GIMP on OS X (Gimp.app) only builds with a separate MacPorts tree, as the application being relocatable depends not on DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH for the included shared libs but on the MacPorts prefix pointing to a symbolic link in /tmp, which must exist at build and (recreated every time) at run time.
D-Bus would be nice to have but IMHO it is not a blocker for 0.47 as the D-Bus API for Inkscape still lives in a separate branch - or are there plans to include it in 0.47 already?
3) Did you have a look at the proposed fixes for the ImageMagick raster effects? https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/390024
I cannot offer to contribute more due to lack of mac packaging experience - anything else that could be helpful besides trying to triage new / unconfirmed osx bugs on launchpad?

I've put up a Mac Inkscape-0.47pre2-1.LEOPARD.dmg package. I wasn't able to add it to the existing 0.47pre2 directory on SourceForge (same problem the Windows packager had) because there were no group write permissions on that directory. Hence I renamed that directory to "UnwritableDir" and made a new 0.47pre2 directory and copied all the 0.47pre2 files there. Can someone remove the UnwritableDir directory? Also, can whoever creates such release folders in future please check that they are writable by other inkscape packagers?
I'll test this package on Snow Leopard tonight, but it should hopefully work given I tried some earlier private builds.
For any of the Mac packagers (not important for users themselves), this build includes the ImageMagick components that were previously missing, thanks ~suv. Note: the ImageMagick components will fail if the user has a version installed in the same prefix that the packager used when building the bundle -- this is a good reason to use an obscure long Macports prefix if you're packaging (see next paragraph). This is because you can tell ImageMagick where to look for its components but it still checks it's install directory and uses them anyway if they exist.
Also, it the package no longer uses the DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to specify where the libraries can be found. Instead they all have their internal paths rewritten at packaging time to be relative to the path of the executable. To allow enough space in the libraries and executables for this path rewriting, the packager must use a Macports installation that has been installed in a longer than normal PREFIX. I don't know what the minimum size is, but I've put a requirement in the packaging script to check that it is at least 50 characters. Thus it needs to be installed in something like /opt/ local-universal-macports-in-really-long-prefix-for-inkscape-etc-etc... you get the idea. This should solve a lot of problems with our bundled libraries conflicting with system versions.
I haven't yet looked at the aspell issue.
Let me know of any new issues.
Cheers, Michael

i.e. unless I modify the limit in osx-app.sh locally, I have to rebuild the complete MacPorts tree for Inkscape if I 'svn update' to the current version of the packaging files in trunk?
Let me know of any new issues.
Did you notice that the bundled python site-packages for 2.6 are not universal but i386 arch only whereas the older ones are all universal builds? Could this be a reason why python extensions fail on SL but work for those who copied the 0.46 python folder into 0.47pre1-2 (0.46 has no 2.6 versions - could be that this forces fallback to python 2.5?)

Could you take a look at my patch in Bug #424394 “Launching and Path problems under Mac”? https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/424394
I have been using it for several days now with different application paths (several ' ', '&', '|' and '#' combinations). As I wrote in the last comment I had to change the '#' escaping for the other two resource files as well which eliminates the need for 'ESCAPED2TOP'.

I was still seeing an issue with it and paths with double spaces. Hence, it didn't add it to the pre2-2 package I just put up. Shouldn't be too hard to debug it though, so I'll try and get this done tomorrow.

When testing both separated diffs, please note that the second one undoes the $TOP quoting in line 87 (ESCAPEDTOP=`echo $TOP ...) that I used in 'inkscape-double-space.diff'.

This is fixed in the Inkscape-0.47pre2-2.LEOPARD+.dmg.
This package also writes the modified theme gtkrc file into the user's $HOME/.inkscape-etc/ directory along with the other config files, rather than into the App bundle itself (Bug #169013).

Yes, the right way is to now do this path rewriting. You won't be able to move a Macports installation. You will need to install it from source into a new prefix. After installation, if you add the line "+universal" to the /etc/macports/variants.conf file then all your Macports packages will then be built universal -- which then makes it very easy to produce universal Inkscape packages.

Something like that. The libraries are all at relative paths to the executable, and some of that space is taken up with something line "@executable_path@/../lib/...". So, no it has nothing to do with where the user installs Inkscape. The 50 characters are needed because some of the libraries are in longer paths that can't be altered, like "@executable_path@/../lib/ ImageMagick-6.5.5/modules-Q16/filters/...", etc.
Actually, the package is no flatter than it was before. There is probably a bunch of stuff that should be in Contents/Resources/share instead of the Resources directory, but that has more to do with whoever wrote the original packaging script.

(nitpicking) since rev. 22205 of 'trunk/packaging/macosx/Resources/script' the launcher script now generally tests
| # Warn the user about time-consuming generation of fontconfig caches. | test -f "${HOME}/.inkscape/.fccache-new" || exit 12
but AFAIK
1) .fccache-new was used as flag for fc-cache (X11) on Tiger 2) ~/.inkscape was changed to ~/.config/inkscape in 0.46+devel
The test fails if I rename an existing ~/.inkscape (to appear like a user who never has run Inkscape 0.46 on Leopard), even if I just used Inkscape 0.47pre2 before and have valid font cache files in ~/.fontconfig:
Inkscape 0.47pre2 displays the error message about "The first time this version of Inkscape is run it may take several minutes... ", creates ~/.inkscape and an empty ~/.inkscape/.fccache-new (as coded in ScriptExec/main.c) and then continues to use ~/.config/inkscape and ~/.fontconfig for preferences and font cache.
IMHO Inkscape 0.47 should not create ~/.inkscape if 0.46 was never run by the user. Instead, it would be better to a) move the fccache-new flag file to ~/.config/inkscape or b) continue to test for the existence of ~/.fontconfig (on Leopard) and create the directory if it is missing.

Hi altogether!
I'm in the process of packaging inkscape 0.47pre2 for debian, and I hope it will be available soon. There is a small problem however, regarding the ssl-support in whiteboard. lintian reports the following error for inkscape:
possible-gpl-code-linked-with-openssl
This package appears to be covered by the GNU GPL but depends on the OpenSSL libssl package and does not mention a license exemption or exception for OpenSSL in its copyright file. The GPL (including version 3) is incompatible with some terms of the OpenSSL license, and therefore Debian does not allow GPL-licensed code linked with OpenSSL libraries unless there is a license exception explicitly permitting this.
If only the Debian packaging, or some other part of the package not linked with OpenSSL, is covered by the GNU GPL, please add a lintian override for this tag. Lintian currently has no good way of distinguishing between that case and problematic packages.
From my understanding, I need an e-mail I can cite in the copyright file stating
that the inkscape developers intend and allow their code to be linked against OpenSSL. I think there should be no problem, since obviously you wanted to use OpenSSL from the beginning.
With best wishes,
Wolfi
