I recently started using inkscape as part of a learning process for a course I'm taking and as a beginner I find it extremely easy to use and as I can't contribute in any other way I'd like to be a part of the translation team for Portuguese-PT.
I read a few articles about what's possible and how to do it; I feel that sending you an e-mail stating that I'm not a person that knows a lot of git processes etc would help you help me understand where I can be of more use.
I wouldn't mind helping translate articles or news, maybe that's easier to start with. I can also translate other stuff from the interface itself but I'm not sure I understood how to post it aftwerwards or even how to collect/download the files to start translating.
I look forward to hearing back from you.

You can find detailed translation instructions over at the wiki.
Under Interface Translation you can find links for the latest up to date PO translation files.
As far as I know I'm currently the only active Portuguese translator in this mailing list, I haven't yet met any others.
I currently maintain the website translations only, haven't yet dipped my toes in UI translation, and I'm not aware of anyone maintaining it at the moment.
If you need any help, or wish to coordinate efforts don't hesitate to contact.
If you already have an account over at the website and await permissions to contribute, I'm sure one of the admins here will answer shortly.

first step completed :) Thanks for posting to the mailing list, and welcome here, too!
You don't necessarily need to know git for translating the user interface (but if you want to learn, it would be much appreciated).
You can also download the file, work on it with a translation software, and then submit it in a bug report, and hopefully then some nice person will pick the task up and will enter it into version control for you.
But, first of all, you'll need to decide which area you'd like to contribute to (interface, documentation, website).
As for access to the website, we don't hand those permissions out lightly, so in the case of you translating news, I'd like to ask Duarte as the experienced PT-PT translator to do the transfer to the website until two substantial contributions have been made, and trust has been established.
Let us know what you'd like to do, and also join us in the translators' chat channel for faster back-and-forth / short questions you may have.

By now I'm slightly confused where we are supposed to swap messages with each other. I hope this is it; I feel a bit stupid by now :)))
As I'm trying to understand the process and software's to translate I registered on GitLab in the meantime.
How should I go from there? I tried looking for some explanations here on the archive but it seems it may take a while. Regarding wiki, I've read most of it, if not all and I'm still unsure how to do it. I still haven't decide for a translation software, maybe that's the issue. I really need those right? I thought I could just translate directly from a file into the file itself, silly moi.
In any case, I'm exploring Gitlab. Feel free to let me know what to from here/there. I'm also reading some explanations there. My email account is basically the same as here.

I think it is probably easier to get a translation program and get right to it for the actual translation part. That is relatively straightforward and motivating to get started, worry about the rest later.
The actual translation proper requires editing the .pot file you have downloaded. You can certainly edit it directly with any plain-text editor, but you'll have to deal with markup manually, navigate the structure by hand and tread lightly not to corrupt the file structure, so a dedicated editor while not mandatory is recommended. I've used POEdit in the past with satisfying results.
You also don't need to go through all the trouble to learn GitLab. You can certainly create a fork, make a branch, do some commits, and then do a pull request, but that can be tricky for such a mundane task. The easier route would be to just send the file here to the mailing list and ask someone to commit it for you. You may also get your translated file, open an issue and ask the developers to commit the changes for you.
The procedure would go roughly like:
Get a translation editor application like PoEdit
Download the .pot files from Inkscape
Open, edit the pot file, and do you translations locally. Don't forget to save
Once you are satisfied, send it here to the mailing list, Inkscape chat, or open an issue over at GitLab
Wait for someone to commit the changes for you

Just a small fix to your instructions for Ana:
You need to work on the po file for your language, if that exists.
Only when it doesn't, you need to take the pot file (po template file) and adjust that.

I just found the inkscape chat page for the translation team and made a question there. Not sure how soon will get the answer. Maybe I can ask you guys here.
In the translation tab, do I have to copy the command lines? the words in between <>? exactly as they are? do I have to translate them or leave them in English?

Hey Ana I see you already got comfortable starting to translate.
Text using <> seems to be HTML style markup for formatting text when displayed in the UI (like bold, italics, etc.). The markup that is inside the <> brackets are html tags and should not be altered, the text between opening and closing tags should be translated, if it is translatable.

Indeed, I think I've been managing. It seems quite an intuitive software.
And understanding that they are HTML tags I did not mess with that; so I shall just put them as they are in the translation tab if I understood you correctly.

How could I do that? Is the same way I get the UI files? And is there more of a deadline for those translations?

Normally you would do it through the website itself, there is a builtin editor for typing your translation, dealing with links and images formatting, and is very straightforward to use. Once you have an account and graduate into the translation team you will be able to do it yourself, until then I can be your liaison.
Since this news peace is particularly short and simple (there are no links, formatting or images) it is quite well suited for your contribution. You can just copy-paste your translation, mail it to me and I'll have it up and published in no time.

There are no deadlines here, we are all volunteers doing it in our spare time as time allows. Since this one in particular is an alert and there is a concern for security for all community members, I'd rather have it published sooner rather than later, but take as long as necessary.
If you don't have the availability or inclination at the moment don't feel pressured, just let me know and I'll take care of it.

because I see that there it states that I'm a vector image editor, which I'm not and I just thought maybe there's something wrong? I "forked" something, it's my 1st time on such website, and maybe I did something wrong by doing that? I can't seem to change anything or it's my lack of knowledge.

You did nothing wrong, you created a fork of Inkscape's repository. A fork is a personal copy of the source code base you can make changes to, without disrupting the original owners. It is actually the first step to committing your local changes.

The last sentence: "Any official invitations to collaborate from the project will be listed prominently on our website (i.e. here)."
I wonder what "here" means. At the above mentioned page? Probably not! So maybe "here" needs to be tagged as a link to the appropriate page where official invitations to collaborate are listed (which I don't know).
P.S. I tried to start a new thread about this subject through https://lists.inkscape.org/hyperkitty/list/inkscape-translator@lists.inkscap..., but for some reason I got an allert message: "You are not allowed to send to our lists from the web interface." I don't know why. I'd appreciate any explanation why I'm not allowed to do that.

Hi Milo,
they'll be listed on the Inkscape website, and users are already on that website, so it is indeed 'here' (or rather, there, from here...).
I don't think we can confidently claim that it'll only be in the news section, so 'the website' is as specific as it can get.
As for the hyperkitty frontend: It's broken. Just ignore it and continue using the mailing list as usual. I've given up trying to get anyone to fix it, there's noone who feels responsible, and the Inkscape board prefers to invest into bug fixing rather than infrastructure for the community.

Just to say that I finished/completed my first po file and have opened an issue on gitlab and uploaded them there.
I hope they are correctly done.
