I was hoping some of you fellow inkscape users may now how to accomplish this particular way manipulating text. It started as a discussion at the inkscape forum in this thread, and I trying to find a reliable way to reproduce the indiana, ben hur and red hot shape of text. http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=32
Can someone help out on this one, or is my only alternative to manually edit each set of node.

Yes, I am interested in alternatives to achieve this effect in Inkscape too. Dragging the nodes is not difficult but the ease of use it somewhat dependent on the font used. For instance, a script font would be much harder to do as opposed to a block font.
If anyone has tried the the mould tool in the free Xara LX (Linux only) then I think that is what D. Jones is after. That particular tool is extremely powerful.

I'm afraid, yes (at least I didn't found another way), but I think this isn't as difficult as it sounds.
My steps (I'm referring to the 'INDIANA' text).
1. Type your text with the text tool. 2. Make a ellipse for the curved text. Position it above the text. This will be for the upper part of 'INDIANA'. 3. Make a copy of this ellipse (CTRL+D), and put it right underneath the text. 4. Select both the text and the two ellipses, and align them vertically (center). 5. Select the text and execute 'Text > Object to Path'. 6. Draw the nodes until they go along the ellipses. 7. Execute CTRL + ALT + C. Now you can fine-tune the nodes.
Regarding the lines of the text: I would adjust their width in the beginning.
Here's a screenshot I just did to illustrate what I mean:

Those are not all of the steps to create the INDIANA logo, but I think this is one way to accomplish this.

My guess is that especially the 'INDIANA' logo wasn't drawn merely using some plug-in effect (especially the bevels). Ok, maybe partially, but not all of it.

How about using the Perspective effect on the text. I doesn't make curved lines but you could aproximate it with several boxes. The triky part is to get the effect only apply the perspective without rotating the object. To do is I had to reverse the path and then use flips on the box. You have to select first the box and then the path to apply the perpective. Here is a svg file with the basic procedure. Hope it helps
