LPE dropdown box (was : NEW: LPE Interpolate)
The LPE choose dropdown box is getting really huge now. Who wants to make mockups of what is a better system for applying effects?
What about just a hierarchical menu with submenus, similar to the Effects menu?
I think this is an issue that needs more to be discussed before coding anything (search for filters ?) Here is a first draft for LPE submenus, please comment and modify :
=Artistic= // Everything that changes the path style (on a visual point of view) Freehand Shape Interpolate Sub-Paths Pattern Along Path Sketch Stitch Sub-Paths
=Create= // create a very different path Gears Spiro spline ? VonKoch
=Path Tweak= //small modifications Knot
=Distort= // change the path shape Bend Envelope Deformation Lattice Deformation Perspective path
=Technical= // tools for tech and serious drawings Angle bisector Boolops Circle (center+radius) Circle through 3 points Construct grid Mirror symmetry Offset Parallel Perpendicular bisector Ruler Rotate copies Tangent to curve

I would avoid vague terms such as "artistic" - everything can be artistic if used for artistic purposes :) Here's my proposal:
== Path operations:
Boolops Mirror symmetry Offset Spiro Knot - better something like "Suppress intersections"
== Subpath operations:
Interpolate Stitch
== Adorn path:
Freehand Shape - same as Pattern Along Path, why?! must be removed Pattern Along Path Sketch
== Generate:
Gears VonKoch - more descriptive name anyone? Grid Ruler Rotate copies - maybe better "Rotated copies"?
== Distort:
Bend Envelope Deformation Lattice Deformation Perspective path
== Geometry:
Angle bisector Circle (center+radius) Circle through 3 points Parallel Perpendicular bisector Tangent to curve
I think this is a nice subdivision, but I am wondering how to make the UI. Do we want a button "Add effect..." that spawns something like a hierarchical popup menu. Or, rightclick the stack list to spawn that popupmenu. Or a big list of expandable categories (like a tree list of folders on your harddisk), that one can double click to add an effect. Etc...

I don't think it is possible to add submenu's to a combobox which we use now. Note that now, you have to select an effect, and then press "add". What I was proposing is an "Add..." button that spawns a menu like the ">>" button on the toolbar does (when not all icons fit on it) and adding the effect when clicking on it. So instead of first selecting, then adding; do them at once.

Sounds good - but then, I think the button should not just show a + sign, but say "Add effect", ideally with a triangle mark that indicates that this button can be "expanded".
That or if you stick with the drop down you populate it with the 10 most used and have a seperator and then more.... at the bottom that popus up a full list. Make the 10 act like the recent files and you end up with a drop down that probably has the ones you want most of the time, but easy access to the rest.

I think we really have to categorize this huge list. This 10 most used LPEs can be an idea, but if I have to strive to find another effect which is not in this list, it's a problem.
By all means have a categorised list in the pop up for "more..." but for my usage at least I can see the top 10 covering at least 95% of my time, with others 5% at most. I'd rather search a bit 5% of the time than have to dig through categories the other 95%

Seems like a dynamically calculated "most popular" or "more recently used" list or category would be the most effective? I think gimp has added something like that for their filters... yes, they have a "Recently used" category at the top of the menu, in addition to the Repeat / Reshow last. Doesn't seem to persist across sessions though, probably should.

GIMP is a different beast. You can go and assign any hotkey to any menu item there, so accessing most used color tools and filters/scripts there is not an issue.

I didn't say it was a bad idea to have the 10 most used LPE. I think it's a good idea. But for the whole list, why can't we do categories ? The answer "because a GTK drop list can't have subcategories"is not an answer, we must find another way to do it. Johan said :

Well it sounds good to me

This is exactly what I think too.
The last Win versions (21, 22 Jan) are 6.3MB files which extract to .jar files. Veeeeeery interesting but what does one do with them? They do not appear different to the same files in the full 19 Jan version. Erik
