Inkscape 0.46 About Screen Contest - Voting time!
Hello all!
The submission period for the contest has concluded. Now it is time for the community voting. To find out more and to cast your votes, please visit the following link: http://inkscapers.deviantart.com/journal/16298574/
We will count votes from the mailing list for people who do not have DA accounts, as we did last time. However, if you have a DA account or wouldn't mind signing up for one, it will make things much easier when it comes to tally time.
Good luck everyone!
-Josh

Should we base our vote purely on aesthetics or should we take the inclusion of new features into account? The guidelines of the contest clearly stated that: "It must use SVG filters and/or Live Path Effects. We also recommend you explore the 3D box tool and the tweak tool (as well as the "engravers toolbox" via the calligraphy tool)."
Given that I think that we should: 1- disqualify (politely) those which did not use the requires ones (SVG filters and/or Live Path Effects) 2a- give bonus points to those which used several of these features and/or 2b- put a mention of those in the voting entry text and clearly state that the inclusion of such features should be valued in the rating (maybe add a note next to each entry about which of those features are included)
What do people think?

I don't know about disqualifying those that didn't use the effects, but at least it would be nice to have a blurb for each that explains what effects were used. I would prefer to vote for one that uses as many new features as possible (while still standing on aesthetic merits), but at the moment I have no idea which those are.

Yeah, I don't know about disqualifying either. I think that in the future we'll encourage more use of new features. It seems like a number of them used filters and the 3d box tool was surprisingly really popular.
As for which submissions used whatever features, it would realistically be good practice for all entrants to include that info in the summary of that deviation (where it takes you if you click those thumbnails). I did it on mine, but don't know that it's the best format.

some did but summarizing this in the main list would be nice.

Personally I'm just going to vote on aesthetics. If they did their job well, you won't necessarily _know_ that they used or didn't use a particular feature. Also I'd rather have a good-looking about screen that didn't use all the features than an amateurish one that did.

I don't know if this is appropriate to ask or not, but what's with the zipper in number 11? A lot of people seem to like this one. I agree it is a nicely executed design and quite aesthetically pleasing but how does a zipper tie into Inkscape? It looks more like an add for Eddie Bauer or Patagonia to me. It certainly doesn't say "drawing program" to me.

Maybe it just says that you could design for Eddie Bauer or Patagonia if you use Inkscape -- and that's worth a lot to attract new users. If you're not a new user, I doubt you'll give this screen a second look once the contest is over. So it's just advertising - and does a great job (as do many of the others)

Check out the new SourceForge.net Marketplace. Just a guess - the drawing apparently involves layering and you can use the zipper to reveal the different layers of coloring/effects - like I said, just a guess. Jim Jones

Wow, the screens get better with every new release. Jut wonder if that is inkscape, the artists or the popularity of inkscape improving?
Anyway, my vote goes to №7 by needcoffee. I also liked №19 by ironya. №16 would make a great tutorial on icy shapes though.
Best regards, Helge

If my vote counts (as a lurker) I'd vote for this one:

Thanks.

I second that.
I think http://needcoffee.deviantart.com/art/Inkscape-0-46-About-Screen-73478652 is a good representation of the new 3D box feature. Also, I like the colors.

Hey all...
I wish I could be excited about this one. Unfortunately, it appears that I had forgotten one entry when putting the list of submissions together. I have since updated that journal entry with that one included (as well as a couple more thumbnails we got). It is number 32 at the bottom. - http://carver-s.deviantart.com/art/inkscape-about-screen-73960311
For anyone that would like to change a vote, please let me know and I will get it corrected when tallying up the numbers.
I'm very sorry about any inconvenience.

I really like 18 and 17 by ~haruwen
But 2, 6, 12, 28 and 32 are nice too. Some great entries.
I vote for 23 first, and 14 second. But there are several others very close behind. Great effort everyone!
