Hello, I am using the August 30th build (as with the more recent ones I can't save as PS/EPS, it closes the program), and there is something that I think is wrong with text editing:
If I have a long one-line text, and hit <enter> in the middle of it, I end up with two separate block of text, no longer one text.
If I have a multi-line text (sometimes the <enter> works..), and hit <backspace>, to make it onle line again, it just deletes a whole line!!
what is this?
cheers

It's a bug in the text handling. I believe it's been fixed in the most recent builds; I don't know about the PS/EPS crash though.
If you can reproduce the PS/EPS export crash with the latest builds, could you please file a bug report for that problem on Sourceforge?

OK. When I set up text in CorelDraw I usually prepare a text frame, then insert the text. Then if I need to change the text frame dimensions I change them using the normal top/side/diagonal arrows. The critical factor for me is that the text itself stays the same size. Ie the point size and height/width do not change.
If I do the same in Inkscape then the height and width of the letters changes with the frame and the text does not remain the same. I find this incredibly frustrating to the point that it is a real limitation on using Inkscape where text is involved. Xara behaves like this as well.
Is there a setting in Inkscape that enables me to have the text untouched during these frame changes? I guess I am looking for something like the scale change button that allows you to scale the line dimensions or not as the scale changes. It may be staring me in the face.

That's interesting. I'm sure that I just don't understand but what benefit is this to the user. If you add text to a frame that isn't big enough does the frame change in size or does the text get cut off like in Scribus, for instance? Is that how CorelDraw works? Just curious.

The solution is simple, but hard to find...
-Select your textbox with the _text_ tool, (so, there's a cursor blinking somewhere in the box), then - find the small rectangle/handle at the lower right corner and drag it. Now the frame resizes, but the text doesn't. It floats!
It only took me a year to find it out.
Hope this helps,
Maarten

As I said, "I must be stupid" :-).
Thanks, Johan
Your screenshot shows normal text, not boxed text. In comparison with corel (you seem to be familiar with it) it is like you are working with "artistic text", not "paragraph text".
To create a boxed text in Inkscape, select the text tool, click and drag the cursor to create a text box and ten paste or write some text inside.
The text frame is blue and is visible only when you have the text tool selected and the text box is selected too.

If you enter more text then the widht of the box, Inkscape, Corel and Scribus just cut off the lines that don't fit.
Indeed, in Corel and Scribus, if you change the box, the text doesn't scale but 'reflows'. This, indeed, Heathenx, is the behaviour you need for DTP applications.

Hi,
In Inkscape the user sees the text frame (the blue one with the handle in the bottom right corner) only when text editing is enabled. In case text edition is not enabled (for example when working with the object selection tool), the user sees the object handles because Inkscape behaves like the text box is a normal object that can be resized and its proportions altered. Also, if the text frame is smaller than its content, the text is just hidden and no warning is shown. It is then very simple to forget some part of the text, specially working with a language that the user don't understand.
Compared to Corel Draw, this behaviour is a minus (speaking of usability). Corel behaves this way: A text frame object is always handled as a text frame and is always visible when the text object is selected. There is no need to have the Text tool enabled to see the text box handles (and there are 8 handles that alow resizing of the text box in all direction, instead of only 1 in Inkscape). Even with the Object Selection tool you can resize the text box so the text just flows inside the text frame without altering the size and proportions of the letters. If the user wants to resize the text box AND alter the size of its content (for example shrink the text size without changing its layout), then it can be done as described previously but with the ALT button pressed and by grabbing one of the 4 corner handles.
Another plus is that in case the text box is smaller than its content, then the bottom center handle features a small arrow turned down (like "there is more text than what you see").
P.S.: All the previous description of the behaviour of Corel Draw is based on version 12.

To answer your second question first. When you add text to a frame (in CD) that is not big enough then the text wraps within the frame until it gets to the bottom of the frame. The frame does not change size automatically. Under this condition the extra text is not visible but is still there and shows up when you resize the frame.
As to the benefit. It is essential when you have a relatively complex piece of work with many text frames and graphics intermixed and you want to change the layout around to find the most appropriate one. For example early this year I completed a double sided A3 sized brochure. One side had 11 graphics intermixed with 30 text frames. During the layout stage the text and graphics were being moved all around the place within three columns. The text frames had to be be fine tuned to maximise space use and occasionally to allow inclusion of extra text, grammar changes etc. This would have been a nightmare if text size had shifted with the frame.

Hi all,
Where can an Ubuntu 7.04 user get a current dev. build?
Am I right in thinking that the latest Autopackage is 06-Sep-2007?
Not sure about the Zero Install version because Zero Install seems to have issues in Ubuntu 7.04. It's not in the Universe component for 7.04 as it claims. I installed the a .deb, that was ok but it wants unlzma for the Inkscape resource, and the lzma package doesn't provide unlzma... in general zero install in Ubuntu 7.04 seems to have a more literal meaning than intended.
Cheers -Terry
Terry Brown wrote:

It might be a while before a new Autopackage, I'm still working through an issue with apg++ and stack protection. If anyone would like to lend their technical knowhow to assist me that would be much appreciated. Or if someone wanted to build autopackages on an older system without the issue, I could walk them through it.

If you're scaling this as an object, e.g. in Selector, everything scales including text. If you drag the special handle in the flowed text frame, lower right corner, only the frame resizes and the text reflows while remaining the same font size.

Well, I didn't know, where to cling in with this mail, so I just figured, further up in the thread might be a good place, esp, since I agree with Erik.
The behaviour as described for Corel is the normal behaviour for any application I know. If you have a flowed text, I don't want it's size to be modified, when modifying the container it is in. It may be a approach coming from the far layouting edge of graphics, but flowed texts _are_ in that edge as well. It's the same with images, btw: If I have a image clipped and I change the clipping box, I don't want to scale the image, unless I explicitly say I want to. But back to text: the behaviour of Inkscape is quite strange in my opinion. since however, the selection tool only selects the text and not the box it is in, I didn't really have problems using it. However, it costs _a lot_ of time, because I select the text with the selection tool, need to notice that not the box is selected, need to remember "Ah, right, Inkscape uses the text tool" and then go ahead with that one, only to face the problem, that I cannot adjust the size in millimetres anywhere. So let's make some guidelines to adjust the size...
As you can see: quite uncomfortable :)
Cheers!

Hey everybody!
After this email Cedric wrote me an email off list and it caused me to look in to the topic again. It didn't however cause me to change my position on this :-)
So what I figure now, is that the current behaviour is not only disliked by some users due to personal preferences but is also inconsistent with Inkscape itself. I for one cannot find any good reason, why dragging the text tool should not create the same as making a text and a box and flowing the text into the box -- just a quicker way of doing so. Manually flowing the text into a box on the other hand behaves almost like the other posters and me want it to work. (It should only be easier to select the text than the box. When a box is completely full, this kind of hard...)
Besides this, please have a look at bug RFE 1597125 http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1597125&gro... in this context.
Take care!

I did filed the bug report on the EPS crash.
I revert to the latest build, but the text editing issue continues, just that this time, if I hit <enter> in the middle of some text, it breaks the text in two texts. If I hit <enter> in the _end_ of a line, it works fine.

Carlos, I cannot reproduce this behaviour. I am using win2000 and October 9 build. Hitting "enter" in a sentence puts the following text on a new line regardless of where it is entered. This happens with flowing and regular text.
The behaviour you describe certainly happens in the September 17 build. Erik kaver@...45...
The latest build (autopackage) I see in dowloads page for linux is from 6 september...

Carlos,
AAAH! That probably explains it then.
The September 22 build also has the problem. However, it was cleared up on the September 27 and subsequent builds. Sorry I can't help you on the Linux builds.
