Fwd: Website: small update to 'Getting Started'
Hi website translators,
we're trying to make the info on the pages for guiding new contributors more complete. As a first step, there's a small new paragraph added. If you have translated that page, it will need an update soon ;)
I've decided to start adding screenshots of the changes to the 'website update' mails, to make it easy for you to spot what's new, until the diff system for the website is working, see attachment. I had to make the picture small because of the 40kb message limit in this list. I hope it's still useful - if not, please complain!
Regards, Maren
Hi everyone,
it seems our team of volunteers for the chat often gets requests in other languages, which they cannot answer - and so we have a few users who are unhappy because nobody helps them, and some volunteers who are unhappy because they can't help.
To somewhat alleviate the situation, I'd like to ask you to research if there is an (active) Inkscape support IRC channel for your language, and send info about that to this list. I will then adapt the chat page for your language, so people can access a chat where people understand them, and then, I will ask you to update the page text, so it tells people about the correct language, and also contains a link to the English chat channel, in case they *want* to ask in English.
Please also send a message to the list if there is *no* chat for Inkscape in your language. (For German, these adaptations are done)
Thank you very much for your help,
Regards, Maren
Hi,
#inkscape-fr for french is active and has been pointed to by the french version of the chat page for a long time.
Most people asking on IRC in something else than english ask in spanish or portuguese, sometimes german.

Thank you, Marc, - German should be solved now ;) - there exists an active IRC channel.
The French page contains quite a different text than the English page (but a good one, which seems to be tailored to replace the English pdf, only it also seems to sum up several sections of the page), and a little English, too.
Maybe someone can help with updating the page, and making its sections a little more similar to the English ones, so it will be easier for other translators who may come after us?

I am not aware of any existing Portuguese community, or IRC channel for that matter. At least not European Portuguese, though I must say I never really searched for one before. From a quick (an not very thorough) Google search I found this IRC channel http://irc.lc/gimp/inkscape/irctc@@@ and this website http://wiki.softwarelivre.org/InkscapeBrasil/ though I am not sure of it's intentions, or user activity. Maybe our Brazilian friends can jump in and share any Brazilian communities they know :)

Thank you, Duarte, for looking!
Browsing around the website you linked, I found this: "Nos encontramos no canal |#inkscape-brasil| no servidor |freenode.net| "
I just connected to both Portuguese/Brazilian channels to test, and they were a bit ... empty. Maybe it's a time zone issue? Does anybody know more?
Question to the non-pt people ;-) : Is there a Russian, Spanish, Chinese, or Japanese Inkscape IRC channel which is active?
I will also ask this over at inkscape-user.
Thanks for helping! Regards, Maren

Hi, Maren! I've searched for related Russian IRC channel - 0 results found. As things are going, Russian end-users usually use common forums (mostly in Russian) to ask for the help. Russian developers, on the other hand, usually know English quite well and do not hesitate to use English IRC channels and forums (as there are far more specialists). Localized IRC channels commonly used for discussions on big topics (for instance, community of Ubuntu, Archlinux users).

Thank you Egor, for this good info! Is there any Russian Inkscape forum you would like to see mentioned on the website, beside http://paint-net.ru/forum/viewforum.php?f=33 (see https://inkscape.org/en/community/)
So the Russian chat page could mention that the chat is available in English only. It could also mention that people, if they don't like to ask their questions in English, can visit one of the forums to get help. Basically, this is already explained in the English text, but an additional hint in the box at the top might be nice to help our users find the info they need quickly. What do you think?

Hi everyone,
asking on Inkscape-user for more IRC channels didn't yield any new info, unfortunately. So it seems there is no active IRC channel in Spanish or Portuguese - which were the most 'disruptive' (lacking a better word..., sorry!) languages, according to Marc.
Could you all make sure that there's an explicit mention of the channel being for questions *asked in English* on your language's chat page (unless it's German, English, or French)?
Some smaller page updates will follow soon - and a section about animation is in the works :)
Thank you!
Kind regards, Maren
Maren, I've google a lot once again. :) Seems like the URL you presented is the most suitable and unique for Q&A among all existing sites on topic. So, as far as we only couple of URLs and one reference to English IRC, IMO, there is no need in info duplication. Of course, if you want all localized versions of site to look uniform, hint-box is an option.
Interesting fact, in a meanwhile, that there are _a lot_ of sites with Inkscape tutorials...

Hi Egor,
mean? I'm not even sure which page you refer to... Chat or Community?
Sure. I'm going to leave from all links presented at this page ( https://inkscape.org/en/community/ ) only "English and Russian forums", "IRC English channel", etc. I would say it won't be a lot of information to read through, so
- Ah, thanks :) Yes, that makes sense. I guess most people who visit the Russian pages won't be much interested in Brazilian forums...
> Basically, this is already explained in the English text, but an > additional hint in the box at the top might be nice to help our users > find the info they need quickly. What do you think?"
is not neccessary.
- Oh, this was referring to the Chat page. Because there is no extra irc channel for many languages (Russian included), it would be good to explicitly say that the Chat we offer is for English only. The people who answer the questions on IRC don't like to be asked questions in a language they don't speak.

- Yes, please! (your website translations actually help make it easier for them ;) )
