Hi all.
Is posible add a mobile phone for Inkscape proyect. The growing services based in mobile some of them mobile only, maybe require an oficial mobile phone. The goal is not use calls or data changes and use throught WIFI.
Cheers, Jabier.
Maybe is better a tablet with SIM to fast write.

Inkscape on a phone would be interesting. But it presents it's own set of user experience issues.
If it was to ever happen, it would need many people to work on the design before code was even touched.
Although maybe with Gtk3 and Glade we'd have a shot at working some of those problems out... but depends on how easy it would be to package a C++ app for a mobile too. Not impossible for f-droid, but highly unlikely for iphone or regular play store.

Do you have applications that you like for viewing and editing SVG images on iOS?

Hi Martin! You undertand me bad, sure about my english. Im speaking Inkscape owns a SIM card to allow join in the growing ecosistem of mobile services that need a phone to work. Whatsapp, Telegram, Walapop, mobile specific services by some bussines...
This SIM can be hanled by one board member and dont need to accept calls but SMS. About the tablet is only because is more manegable than a phone to write.
Cheers, Jabier.

Sorry Martin, reply without reading all mmessages. Bryce, If conservancy could do some actions when requested thats great. I hope there is no too much but mobile has a large way and maybe in the future we are adbocated to use for each thing we want, except drink a beer and pay with bitcoins.

I think not but dont find a free SIM provider with this name. Anyway we need to be sure we can catch the phone number in the future.

Guys,
I read all the thread but was little bit confused: are we talking here about developing inskcape for mobile platforms (iOS and Android) or even better, for tablets (following more or less what Krita did with Gemini version? https://krita.org/en/download/krita-gemini/), or having a physical device, like a cell phone, to be part of 3rd party services?
Cheers,

I believe they're talking about using a cell phone number as a service. The Inkscape Gemini idea isn't bad, but I am skeptical of it. More maintenance, but there's money involved with Krita Gemini. Krita development is accelerated by revenues from Krita Gemini. I believe it's partly how Krita gotten far ahead of GIMP in terms of features and so on in a short amount of time, and how they're getting far closer to Photoshop than GIMP, but already surpassed Photoshop in some areas. Krita 4 new direction is photomanipulation, and that tells a lot about the development of Krita since it's very polished as a painting app.

It seems they're talking about owning a phone account in order to be able to join certain services.
If that's the case, then I strongly advise against proprietary services such as whatsapp, trello, slack, etc... And I would not advise using Telegram as well since the chat logs are not publicly indexed (unless someone does the job of setting up a bot specifically for that purpose).

Hi Felipe, thank you for your answer. It cleared things up.
Hi Miguel, I see. I have no idea what the devs would say about this but I think it could be nice to draw some attention to the possibility of extra cash to the project (in the possibility of existing a Inkscape-Gemini version) to help accelerate development of Inkscape in general. If that is feasible I would +1 for this.

How many of you are up for the Inkscape-Gemini idea? I feel that there are some issues that needs to be addressed before this idea comes anywhere near a possibility. There are a few things that does need to be addressed :
The easiest to address in theory, and guess work as I"m no programmer: I think is the calligraphic brush and the pencil tool. Why? These are the tool that doesn't need a major overhaul compared to layer mask/clip management. But, again, I'm guessing here. The pencil tool, calligraphic brush is what mobile users will use if they are going to use Inkscape-Gemini version. They will not use the pen tool that often because it is time consuming. If it were possible to have a option to generate a path based on the total area the pencil results and the calligraphic brushing covers up, then the mobile version of Inkscape will make sense. Less nodes, and cleaner looking results in the outline.
And then, we have the thorny issue of making layer/group + clip/mask. Right now, for one to do a sensible work flow utilizing layer mask/clip. One has to go all the way of planning to use clones, and applying to group using clones just to set up a sensible workspace for artwork with a lot of shapes and clipping. Even then, if I try to do things in Krita style within Inkscape. I cannot avoid the huge issue of not being able to set up a mask layer without it interfering with the main workspace. As attached, there's an example. You kinda have to plan to do this on a much larger project though. The reason I am doing this workflow is that I now have a much greater degree of control over masking and clipping, and considering there isn't a good way to edit masks or clipping.
And finally, the issue with filters, and blur filters are not going to play nicely with tablet performance, but then again Inkscape has terrible performance, and that's a issue that doesn't affect just the Gemini idea. At this point, you can do very complicated works in Inkscape with many clip/mask, but the issue with Inkscape's performance is literally what stops that from being a possibility. The same issue can be found on Krita. You can literally do a beautiful painting of over 250+ layers in Krita with many effects, but it doesn't perform anywhere near as good as Photoshop, and it's a huge waste of time to deal with lags. Even if desktop Inkscape has their performance issue addressed, some works are still going to require a huge amount of processing power that cannot be addressed with tablets.
And then, there's the terrible issue of bugs within Inkscape. I think I just tried setting up a sensible workspace, and it crashed. I'll report that to launchpad. But, I believe it has to do with nodes count.
In conclusion, I do NOT believe Inkscape-Gemini is a possibility unless every of those issues are addressed.

I agree. Let's make Inkscape work properly on Desktop/laptop, fix all our long standing bugs, then think about tablets. The all the vector editors I've tried for tablet are horrible. No one has anywhere close to something usable, and it's mainly trying to use these fat wiggly sausages attached to my palms for precision work. It sucks, and no professional would accept working that way.
Let's not make Inkscape into a tablet toy for hipsters to try once and never use again. It's going to suck. :) let's wait until most tablet makers adopts a precision stylus, then revisit.

On 6/2/2017 11:13 PM, Victor Westmann wrote:

Hi Miguel, I see. I have no idea what the devs would say about this but I think it could be nice to draw some attention to the possibility of extra cash to the project (in the possibility of existing a Inkscape-Gemini version) to help accelerate development of Inkscape in general. Guys,
I read all the thread but was little bit confused: are we talking here about developing inskcape for mobile platforms (iOS and Android) or even better, for tablets (following more or less what Krita did with Gemini version? https://krita.org/en/download/krita-gemini/), or having a physical device, like a cell phone, to be part of 3rd party services?

For this thing, maybe a free trello account would be enough?

Just another reminder - Krita has had many successful kickstarters within the scope of their desktop software - the tablet app is a new thing for them. My thought is, if we are going to take Krita as an example to follow for how to get inkscape development funded, we should start where they did. So I'm not saying we should ignore what Krita is doing right. It's just figuring out what they have been doing right for years now, and working to apply those successful practices to the benefit of Inkscape in its current state.

Well... There's nothing secret or mysterious about it. We created the krita foundation in 2013 because Dmitry was going to leave university, and we didn't want to lose him for Krita, which probably would have happened if he would have had to take another job.
And we basically copied the Blender model: fund raisers, development fund, one-off donations and selling training videos. It takes a lot of energy, and we're not quite at a level where I can also live from working on Krita, so I sometimes have to take extra jobs. Making sure that people are aware of Krita also means working hard to be visible on Twitter, Tumblr and so on.
Note that Krita Gemini was actually done back in the days of KO GmbH, a company I had founded together with a Swedish and a German guy. That company was founded when we saw that Nokia quite probably would want to have some kind of document viewer for Maemo and we thought KOffice would be a good fit... It was, but when Nokia was sold, we lost our biggest customer. Then we tried to make Krita work for KO, and we got Intel to fund the development of Krita Sketch and Krita Gemini, which we then started selling on Steam.
Usually we do the big fund raiser in May, but this year external circumstances meant we've had to move that to the end of the year. The kickstarter formulay, by the way, is kind of at the end of its usefulness. Producing the rewards gets harder, if the campaign isn't funded in a day or two, people will already start claiming it's a failure, and it's impossible to get even the free software news sites to write about the campaigns.

Good luck with your fundraisers. I look forward to supporting again this year. :)

Can you explain to the Inkscape developers and subscribers of Inkscape-devel in depth about the Krita development? You may forward this to kimageshop if you wish.

Ah, I thought that they were releasing a tablet app. Thanks for the correction. But I really don't think the success of their kickstarter can be attributed solely to the tablet version of Krita... Or at least that's not why I contributed. :) I maintain a better desktop experience should be priority.

I think that's interesting, but as an application our key needs to be having a good touch story to go along with mouse driven work. So we don't need to start out thinking about HW, if we were good on MS's Surface tablets and other similar platforms that would be the first step.
