Thanks for your votes! We have our new "Draw Freely" font!
And the winner (by quite a bit, actually) is Euphoria Script! Thanks to everyone for the votes and helping us choose a new open font.
The new font will be deployed to the website and relevant graphics.
You can start using it now in your inkscape-related materials by downloading it here: (includes font and ofl license files).

Have fun, and thanks again for the help!

I guess I missed all the excitement. But does it have glyphs for anything other than Latin and extended Latin?
Alex
It seems to have Latin-1 coverage only. It doesn't have Polish letters except ó and Ó (missing: ĄĆĘŁŃŚŻŹ ąćęłńśźż), Cyrillic, or Greek. It does have ß, ™, æ, œ, ð, þ, §, ½, €, ¢, «, », ×, ÷ and a few other glyphs.
The font was made via a Kickstarter campaign and it seems it doesn't have any "official" home, so I'm not sure how these glyphs could be added. On the other hand, at least it doesn't have a nonsensical cursive glyph for ł. http://www.twardoch.com/download/polishhowto/stroke.html

Before we all worry too much about specific details of the font, we should probably be clear on how we want to use it first:
1.) Is the trademarked slogan supposed to be translated at all? 2.) Is the font supposed to be used for anything else than for the slogan "Draw freely." ?
ad 1.)To my understanding, any translation will loose its 'trademark' property (not sure, though). Translating the web site for German, I never considered to translate the trademarked slogan... (only in parentheses, as an explanation - it would have sounded off, anyway, to me). The words can be understood with even the most basic set of English vocabulary. ('Draw' and 'free' are among the first words students learn at school.) I personnally don't see a need to translate it, and would rather like to keep the trademark / authenticity.
ad 2.) For the question about how the font was planned to be used - CR, did you plan anything for it? Or was this just intended for the 'Logo' portion?

There is a file in source control with a Russian version of the slogan, Рисуй свободно.

It depends on the language / culture. A non-English slogan may resonate better with the target audience, even if it doesn't have trademark protection.

This is of concern to me. I thought glyph coverage was factored in before putting fonts up for vote. I incorrectly assumed that the fonts were vetted rather than just thrown in an available fonts pool.

I may be able to get the font expanded to support more scripts next year, but it would likely be 6-9 months from now until that work would be completed.

In our trademark policy the only reference to translation is in the context of the software itself (so e.g. a German translation of Inkscape's UI can still be described as Inkscape™.
https://inkscape.org/en/about/trademark-policy/

It does not specifically appear we are *prohibited* from translating the slogan (which would be silly). But just that (I guess) it wouldn't be protected as a trademark. I suspect that if we feel that is important, we could look into registering it in other countries/languages. I'd suspect there'd be some fee involved.

Greetings, all. I have updated the font to include ~150 more latin characters to fill most of the gaps.
Something a bit disturbing, contained in this font is the message:
Copyright (c) 2012 Sabrina Mariela Lopez (typesenses@...3280...), with Reserved Font Name "Euphoria Script"
Makes no mention of the license it's supposed to be within the font it's self. I will have to do more digging to ensure this font is editable as we have assumed.
I have not added any Russian characters, however I am happy to if someone can confirm the cursive version of Russian characters bear any at all resemblence to the english cursive characters. For example, is this chart fairly correct? : https://russianreport.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/cyrillic-alphabet-chart1.j...
To test the extended version of the font with extended character set, it can be downloaded here: http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/EuphoriaScript-Regular_extended.zip
Please do let me know what you think, or any errors I may have made.
Thanks. -C

Yes, this looks correct. Note that the joins between а, е, etc. and л, я and м are different than in Latin cursive script - the 'hook' upwards on the left is preserved. I think Alexandre can provide a sample.

These are my proposed shapes for ł, ą and ę. They may need some tweaking to fit with the rest of the font, since I'm not a good type designer.
The placement of ogonek on Ą is somewhat unorthodox, but it would be natural to write this way by hand, and I think everyone will recognize it. The loop in Ę may be a little too big. That being said, ą and ę never occur at the start of a word, so Ą and Ę would only ever occur in all-caps words, something we would absolutely never do in our branding.

Okay, made an alternative set. If people like these samples, I'll make the changes to all other ogonek-containing characters.
http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/samples/AEae.png
I've used the guidelines I've found for doing so. Euphoria Script is a hybrid font anyway, but I'd like readability first, as I think the base characters contain enough visual flare to keep with the theme.
Thoughts?

According to that link, the bars are slanted, not horizontal... So the advice to make it like the pound sign goes against what the instructions say: "This letter should *not* be drawn like the British pound sign!" Also, all samples of the ł symbol have the slant through the middle, not the top, including all the samples on that page.
So.. are they still wrong? Are you sure? :)

This applies to letters in "typewritten" fonts. The cursive form of Ł looks very much like a pound sign.
Also, all samples of the ł symbol have the slant through the middle, not the top, including all the samples on that page.
ł looks different in cursive / script fonts - the stroke is horizontal and on top. Be sure to check out the examples further down the page. Furthermore, almost all publicly available cursive fonts have an invalid glyph for ł, even some commercial ones. Correct cursive glyphs can be found e.g. in the font "Elementarz" available on dafont.com (though note that the stroke in ł in that font could be a little longer).

These are apparently the only two fonts in the "Calligraphy" category on the site out of ~330 that have correct glyphs. This is probably the most misdesigned letter ever. :(

The license is noted in the NAME ID 13 and 14, it is the open font license; and the project was announced as being licensed under the OFL in https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/typesenses/font-design-euphoria-script/... :)

The description names you as the conspirator :-D that's fun. It's really great when advocation has such positive effects in the wider free culture movement.
And now we get to use it on the website and maybe improve it too.
Martin,
And now we get to use it on the website and maybe improve it too.
Which would be the entire point. :)
Will keep you informed of progress. Currently trying to do Russian calligraphy justice. If I do it right, you shouldn't notice that it was made as a tertiary character set by a different artist. Apparently I need to put my name and details in the log file. I've put that it's for the inkscape project (inkscape.org) as well, so hopefully we can snowball the exposure effect. :)

Hi Friends, I'm working on a (probably feeble) about page contest submission, and I wanted to use the new font. But the link in this message (below) doesn't work (http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/euphoria_script.zip). I got a 404 not found, as well as 403 forbidden (when trying the tld). For all of those who may be participating, where can we find this font?
Thanks, brynn

And the winner (by quite a bit, actually) is Euphoria Script! Thanks to everyone for the votes and helping us choose a new open font.
The new font will be deployed to the website and relevant graphics.
You can start using it now in your inkscape-related materials by downloading it here: (includes font and ofl license files).

Can you upload to your inkscape.org gallery? We can keep these things together as resources there.
Thanks CR.
Martin,
Updated the branding folder in trunk and 0.92.x
Cheers, Jabier.
