Inkscape has launched version 0.92.4 with increased stability. This update delivers some notable performance improvements for filter rendering, saving and moving paths (with a live path effect), and the measure tool. [Inkscape] Issue tracking for Inkscape moves to Gitlab

Hi all, As of this week, the Inkscape project is shifting to Gitlab for issue tracking in place of Launchpad. https://gitlab.com/groups/inkscape/-/issues We've been using Gitlab for our code hosting and other purposes for a year and a half now[1], and have found it to be reliable and convenient. We didn't migrate Issue Tracking until now, so we could take time to make sure we had a plan: 1. Going forward, new bug reports should be filed only in Gitlab. 2. Launchpad will remain available as a historical archive of our bug reports. Filing bugs there will remain possible for now, but discouraged. 3. Bugs in Launchpad that are still reproducible in Inkscape 0.92.4 or newer can be re-filed on Gitlab and closed on Launchpad. We are planning efforts to help organize the migration work and keep track of progress. More info on this will be coming soon. Eventually, when the necessary bugs have been migrated, bug reporting in Launchpad will be shut off. We're enthused about this change, and hope you too will find gitlab a more user friendly way to report issues, and we'd love your help triaging and solving Inkscape bugs. lib2geom v1.0.0 =============== 2geom is a C++ library of mathematics for paths, curves, and other geometric calculations, designed to be well suited for vector graphics: Bézier curves, conics, paths, intersections, transformations, and basic geometries. Originally developed to restructure and improve path data structures in Inkscape, this library's codebase has been maintained and shipped as part of the professional vector graphics software for over a decade. The major contributors to the 2geom library are Nathan Hurst, Michael G. Sloan, Krzysztof Kosiński, Johan B. C. Engelen, MenTaLguY, Aaron Spike, Marco Cechetti and JF Barraud. Work on this release has focused on updating the 2geom source control, build, test and packaging systems for both Linux and Windows. The py2geom python extension package has been restored and improvements have been made to overall code stabilization and quality. The primary motivation for 2geom's 1.0 release is to support a future Inkscape 1.0 launch. With this evolution to a distinct package, the 2geom team is seeking new opportunities to collaborate with individuals and projects interested in using this proven tool. Inkscape 0.92.3 is a maintenance release resolving numerous bugs and making this the most stable release of the series. (Bug #1181127) PDF+LaTeX export ================ Support for multi-line text with basic support for line-spacing attribute was added. (Bug #771959) Please note: • Currently only the line-spacing of the top level text element is considered, i.e. all lines in one text element share the same line spacing. • LaTeX is much more clever with respect to line spacing, so layout might not always be exactly the same as in Inkscape. • Make sure to use a continuously scalable font in LaTeX, otherwise results might be unexpected. Preferences =========== A new renderer option called "Rendering tile multiplier" was added. Making this value larger can speed up drawing, if you have large areas with complex filters in your drawing or work a lot with high zoom levels on filtered objects. Making the value smaller can make zooming and panning in relevant areas faster on low-end hardware (if there are no large filtered areas on the visible part of the canvas). The default value makes your screen consist of about four tiles that are rendered independently, if you're not using a hidpi screen (which requires more tiles). Startup Performance =================== The first start of Inkscape on Windows is much faster now. This is the result of improvements in fontconfig 2.13.0, a third party library which handles font related tasks for Inkscape. One of the tasks is creating an index of all fonts available on the system which is much faster now. If the new indexing causes any issues (i.e. fonts or glyphs not available that could be used before) make sure to let us know or report the issue directly to the fontconfig project. Extensions ========== Extensions on Windows can now make use of Tkinter, without requiring users to install it themselves. Tkinter provides functionality for creating interactive graphical user interfaces. [Inkscape] Request for hosting sponsorship for the Inkscape Project

Inkscape is seeking to improve its online service hosting. To this end we're soliciting proposals for donation/sponsorship of hosting services for the project. The Inkscape Project is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization that develops and maintains the popular Inkscape vector drawing software, provided freely to millions of artists, designers, and other drawers of lines. Our website is at http://www.inkscape.org If you would be interested in sponsoring us through a donation of hosting service, we would be happy to add you to our sponsors page, with a mention & link on our main website's footer. Proposals can be sent to me as contact point. These will be presented to Inkscape's board, who will make the final determination in about a month's time. == Background == We currently have various services hosted at a number of different locations with widely varying administrative capacities. We would like to centralize the administration of these services, such as consolidating them onto one platform. We also want room and flexibility to easily install additional services as we grow. Services high on our priority list to migrate soon include mailing lists, Mattermost, and wiki. Bug tracking, web forum and gitlab are potential secondary priorities. Our Django-based main website may also be worth consolidating at some point in the future. For redundancy, we'd like to engage two distinct hosts, with one as a primary and the other backup/space, preferrably in geographically distinct areas (e.g. Europe and Canada). == Requirements == We think that a suitable machine would look something like this: Minimum Desired Required Ideal CPU: dual core quad core RAM: 4 gb 256 gb Storage: 500GB >1 TB (HW RAID-1) HDD SDD Bandwidth: 1 TB/mo 2 TB/mo OS: Any linux Ubuntu 16.04 We like the straightforwardness of physical (metal) hardware, but could consider virtual options if we can get similar levels of flexibility and expandability. * UPS power backup * 24h support at the datacenter - For hardware (metal) options, a technician would need to be available for handling hardware issues, to do OS installation/reinstallation, hook up KVM/IP if available, and to investigate faults that can't be diagnosed remotely. * Server would be under the administrative and technical management of the Inkscape admin team (about 6-8 people). We would have root access to the machine for doing system updates and to install/configure software and services. * We expect to be managing/maintaining our software ourselves. Items we anticipate migrating to this include (in rough order of priority): + Mailman3 + Mattermost + Wiki (mediawiki currently) + Forum (e.g. hosting for inkscapeforum.com) + Bug tracker (TBD) + Gitlab + Other project management tools + Website / Django * Inkscape does not handle anything particularly controversial. No copyright infringing materials, nothing political, nothing intentionally offensive. Our windows binary has been false-positived by virus software in the past, but we clear this up ourselves. * Currently our website hosting is sponsored and managed by OSUOSL. It's a root access virtual machine running postgresql, memcached, nginx and the django site itself. Memory usage is 450MiB per web host thread, currently 2 threads, plus 500MB for postgresql and 500MB for memcache. CDN is hosted by Fastly, currently serving 32TB per month for Inkscape (1:1.5 ratio US:EU, so more EU hits overall). There's enough dynamic content that we still see a decent load (1/2 TB/mo) on the server, notably around major releases (once every year or two); we are continuously tweaking optimizations.

Version 0.92.2 brings dozens of stability improvements to your favorite vector-drawing application, plus a couple neat new tricks. This is the first release after migrating to GitLab, which will make the application even easier to contribute to.
