[Inkscape] Request for hosting sponsorship for the Inkscape Project

Inkscape is seeking to improve its online service hosting. To this end we're soliciting proposals for donation/sponsorship of hosting services for the project. The Inkscape Project is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization that develops and maintains the popular Inkscape vector drawing software, provided freely to millions of artists, designers, and other drawers of lines. Our website is at http://www.inkscape.org If you would be interested in sponsoring us through a donation of hosting service, we would be happy to add you to our sponsors page, with a mention & link on our main website's footer. Proposals can be sent to me as contact point. These will be presented to Inkscape's board, who will make the final determination in about a month's time. == Background == We currently have various services hosted at a number of different locations with widely varying administrative capacities. We would like to centralize the administration of these services, such as consolidating them onto one platform. We also want room and flexibility to easily install additional services as we grow. Services high on our priority list to migrate soon include mailing lists, Mattermost, and wiki. Bug tracking, web forum and gitlab are potential secondary priorities. Our Django-based main website may also be worth consolidating at some point in the future. For redundancy, we'd like to engage two distinct hosts, with one as a primary and the other backup/space, preferrably in geographically distinct areas (e.g. Europe and Canada). == Requirements == We think that a suitable machine would look something like this: Minimum Desired Required Ideal CPU: dual core quad core RAM: 4 gb 256 gb Storage: 500GB >1 TB (HW RAID-1) HDD SDD Bandwidth: 1 TB/mo 2 TB/mo OS: Any linux Ubuntu 16.04 We like the straightforwardness of physical (metal) hardware, but could consider virtual options if we can get similar levels of flexibility and expandability. * UPS power backup * 24h support at the datacenter - For hardware (metal) options, a technician would need to be available for handling hardware issues, to do OS installation/reinstallation, hook up KVM/IP if available, and to investigate faults that can't be diagnosed remotely. * Server would be under the administrative and technical management of the Inkscape admin team (about 6-8 people). We would have root access to the machine for doing system updates and to install/configure software and services. * We expect to be managing/maintaining our software ourselves. Items we anticipate migrating to this include (in rough order of priority): + Mailman3 + Mattermost + Wiki (mediawiki currently) + Forum (e.g. hosting for inkscapeforum.com) + Bug tracker (TBD) + Gitlab + Other project management tools + Website / Django * Inkscape does not handle anything particularly controversial. No copyright infringing materials, nothing political, nothing intentionally offensive. Our windows binary has been false-positived by virus software in the past, but we clear this up ourselves. * Currently our website hosting is sponsored and managed by OSUOSL. It's a root access virtual machine running postgresql, memcached, nginx and the django site itself. Memory usage is 450MiB per web host thread, currently 2 threads, plus 500MB for postgresql and 500MB for memcache. CDN is hosted by Fastly, currently serving 32TB per month for Inkscape (1:1.5 ratio US:EU, so more EU hits overall). There's enough dynamic content that we still see a decent load (1/2 TB/mo) on the server, notably around major releases (once every year or two); we are continuously tweaking optimizations.

Version 0.92.2 brings dozens of stability improvements to your favorite vector-drawing application, plus a couple neat new tricks. This is the first release after migrating to GitLab, which will make the application even easier to contribute to. This is a pre-release for the upcoming stable bugfix release 0.92.1. Download it at: https://inkscape.org/en/download/development-versions The release is: 0.92.1pre2 Source Tarball Bzip https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/10661/inkscape-0.92.1pre2.tar.bz2 We are now in final freeze prior to release. Barring any last minute issues, 0.92.1 will be identical to the above tarball except for the version number. We'll let things settle for a few days and hopefully finalize the release this weekend. == Translations == Translation work is done. Please hold off on further updates until we're ready to start work on 0.92.2. == Future Releases == 0.92.2-targeted bugfixing work can begin on the 0.92.x branch once the 0.92.1 tarball's been cut, probably this weekend. A schedule will be established at that time as well, targeting a 0.92.2 release in April. A 0.92.3 release sometime around July seems likely. I'm hoping to continue with subsequent point releases on a roughly 2-3 month interval, so users can depend on the 0.92 series as a 'long term stable' (LTS) product. Work towards 0.93 is already underway in Inkscape's trunk repository. In order to modernize Inkscape for ongoing maintenance, there are several large transitions we need to undertake, including a move to Gtk3, re-engineering the Mac OS X installation packaging, introduction of C++-11 code constructs, dropping of our legacy automake build system, migration of the project to git, and more. We had elected to hold off on these transitions for 0.92 so that release could focus on long term stability first and foremost, with 0.93's focus being on taking the more aggressive steps to move Inkscape forward. I am hoping a 0.93 release can be achieved within the calendar year, though much work remains. Assistance with testing is invaluable and I hope many people will join in following the trunk codebase; however, I know that building Inkscape can be a challenge, and we lack nightly builds on a few platforms, so I may attempt some form of interim snapshot preview release this summer to enable some broader testing before we're too far through 0.93's development cycle. The Inkscape project announces a new version 0.92 of its popular vector drawing software. New features include mesh gradients, improved SVG2 and CSS3 support, new path effects, interactive smoothing for the pencil tool, a new Object dialog for directly managing all drawing elements, and much more. Infrastructural changes are also under way, including a switch to CMake from the venerable Autotools build system. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Watch our showcase at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI1hxXt9U4c Download 0.92 from: https://inkscape.org/en/download/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Mesh gradients enable artists to create photo-realistic drawings more easily - a feature we would love to see made part of the W3C's Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) standard; if you find this feature as cool as we do, please request that your favorite web browser adopts support for it too! Inkscape works closely with the SVG standards committee, and thanks to our many generous donors the Inkscape project sponsors an engineering representative to attend SVG working group meetings over the past few years; a welcome outcome of this participation is the improvement and addition of over a dozen SVG and CSS properties, such as paint-order, white-space, and mix-blend-mode. Live Path Effects are proving to be a vibrant ecosystem in the Inkscape project, and many innovative new ideas have been percolating over the past couple years since our last release. Spiro Live, BSpline, and Roughen essentially provide new drawing modes. The Simplify LPE cleans up vector elements non-destructively by smoothing paths, shapes, groups, clips, and masks. Perspective/Envelope and Lattice Deformation 2 enable artists to interactively deform/transform drawing elements. Other new features enable interactive mirroring, interactive rotation of copies along an arc or circle, and dozens of other additions and enhancements. All software must evolve with the times, and Inkscape is no different. To maintain consistency with the CSS standard, Inkscape's default resolution has changed from 90dpi to 96dpi; Inkscape will detect files created with previous versions and offer to convert them. A number of infrastructural changes are in process to help Inkscape keep up with progress. For 0.92 we are changing to the CMake build system, which builds faster and is easier for developers to work with. (Future infrastructure changes include switching from bzr to git, shifting from Gtk2 to Gtk3, and moving to the C++11 standard.) The above barely scratches the surface of all the new stuff included in this release. See Inkscape's bug tracker for a list of known issues. == Translation == We are now in String Freeze. All translators should strive to bring the language files up to date. Please aim to get all translation work committed by mid-June. == Packaging == Packagers for Linux, Windows, and OSX should use this source tarball for creating packages for their respective platforms. I strongly urge all packagers to test their packaging scripts at this time and generate packages for pre1. Please report to this thread with your status in getting the packages made, so I can identify where help is needed. Note that this was produced using the new cmake system, and the autoconfig build files are not included in this dist; if you require the autoconfig system for your platform you can still generate an autoconfig tarball from our VCS trunk, however you should prioritize shifting to cmake as we will be dropping autoconfig in the future 0.93 release. The alpha for Inkscape 0.92, inkscape-0.92pre0, is released and available for testing from the Download page: https://inkscape.org/en/download/source/ The release is: 0.92pre0 Source Tarball Bzip https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/9591/inkscape-0.92pre0.tar.bz2 This is an early preview of our upcoming release and as such can be expected to have some stability issues or incomplete features. See Inkscape's bug tracker for a list of known issues. == Translation == Translators are encouraged to start looking at translation work. String freeze will be in one week (May 22nd), but the i18n POT file has been updated in trunk and we do not anticipate any serious changes between now and string freeze so please feel free to start preparing your language translations. Please aim to get all translation work committed by mid-June. == Packaging == Packagers for Linux, Windows, and OSX should use this source tarball for creating packages for their respective platforms. Note that this was produced using the new cmake system, and the autoconfig build files are not included in this dist; if you require the autoconfig system for your platform you can still generate an autoconfig tarball from our VCS trunk, however you should prioritize shifting to cmake as we will be dropping autoconfig in the future 0.93 release. [Inkscape] Seeking help re:Conservancy Supporter fundraiser

We apologize that we're interrupting the usual content on this mailing list with a fundraising message, but the non-profit home of Inkscape, Software Freedom Conservancy, is in urgent need of your immediate support: https://sfconservancy.org/supporter/ Inkscape receives a variety of important services (see https://sfconservancy.org/members/services/ ) from Conservancy. Inkscape has relied on Conservancy since 2006, and we hope you can help them out. They also support an array of other important Open Source projects, including Git, Samba, Wine, and dozens of others - see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/ for the entire list. While Inkscape and these other projects each contribute 10% of their gross revenue to Conservancy's general fund, this doesn't add up to enough to even employee one full time person, let alone the already overworked staff of three that Conservancy has. Conservancy's fundraiser is asking people who support our principles to donate donate $120/year ($10/month), to support the organization. Conservancy seeks about 2,500 Supporters to continue its current work, and 750 Supporters to continue a "bare minimum" of services to its projects. Already as of the time I write this, 721 people have signed up, so your donation might be the one that ensures the basic community services continue forward or it could start paving the way towards establishing a solid commons for protecting our license freedoms. Whenever I make donations, I like to know how it is tangibly helping achieve progress on things that I care about. Here are some specific things that Conservancy has done for Inkscape over the past few years: * Handling all of our Google Summer of Code payments and travel, tending to the financial transactions with Google to receive and then disperse the money. We're planning on GSoC involvement again this year, and will be depending on Conservancy to handle all the financial bits in order to help make it all proceed smoothly. * Coordinating travel reimbursements for Inkscape contributors to attend conferences. They were instrumental in directly helping us plan, organize, and arrange the 2015 Inkscape Hackfest, and will be helping us organize another hackfest in 2016. * Receiving and tracking all donations. We've received tens of thousands of dollars in donations from you (thank you!) and without Conservancy, our attentions would be consumed by financials instead of remaining focused on the software development. The Conservancy provides access to their ledger system, giving Inkscape great transparency over our finances, while unburdening us from the responsibilities of handling all the individual donations and transactions. * Collaborate with us in crafting the legal policies to establish a Funded Project system for Inkscape. This new system will enable donors to choose specific development tasks to pursue with their money, giving the Inkscape community a powerful way to directly influence the future of the project. * Recovering lost money in Inkscape's paypal account. * Handling book royalties from publishers of Inkscape manuals. * Handling thank-you gifts to developers. In 2015 we distributed programming manuals to Inkscape's top contributors, which proved to be a very cost effective educational effort! * Keeping the non-profit status for us so that Inkscape doesn't have to form its own org and file its own paperwork. In 2015 Conservancy helped us revise our legal charter, the Fiscal Sponsor Agreement (FSA), that defines how Inkscape operates under non-profit rules, board elections, and so forth. Beyond these basic services, Inkscape also benefitted from Conservancy's wider category of license protection services. These services are currently at risk and will only continue if the 2500 membership mark is attained by the community. * Protecting the Inkscape trademark and logo. They helped us finally get the Inkscape name and logo officially trademarked in the U.S. This benefits users by preventing various knock-off scams that purport to sell Inkscape or market scammy services or products using our name. * Enforcing the GPL for Inkscape. Unfortunately we've had a few instances of companies attempting to rebrand Inkscape and sell it as their own proprietary product. We don't have a problem with companies re-distributing Inkscape, so long as it is done according to the GPL license. When nefarious entities seek to subvert that, Conservancy provides the legal muscle necessary to stop it. As you can see, Inkscape relies on the important work of Conservancy.
