[Inkscape] Feature Freeze for Inkscape 0.44

Hi all, This is to announce that we are now officially moving into Feature Freeze. At this time, feature development work on HEAD should cease, in favor of bug fixing work. Any bug fixing work is welcomed. I will be maintaining a list of must-fix bugs, which I will publish within the next day. If you'd like to continue feature development work, you're encouraged to do so on an SVN branch. (If you don't know how to create a branch in SVN, just ask!) ACSpike will publish a -pre0 release ASAP. We will encourage all users to help us test out pre-releases and report issues found. Thank you to all who have been helping Aaron sort out distcheck issues! I would also like to take this chance to thank lucychili for her work at triaging our bug list. There are still some bugs left to be ranked, but due to her work we're close to having them fully ranked. Bryce

[Inkscape] Announcing the 2006 Summer of Code Projects

Hi all! Today was the final day for the Google Summer of Code proposal rankings. As you can imagine, a number of us inkscaper's have been in deep, intensive discussions and votes to arrive at the final prioritization. The final decision of which 4 to select was extremely difficult, and really came down to the wire. A large part of the controversy was whether to have both of the SVG filter projects in the top 4, or to go with 4 distinct projects. But just then, in an amazing stroke of luck, Google was kind enough to allocate an additional project to Inkscape, increasing us to 5 slots! :-) Thus, our final project selection is as follows: Application Student Mentor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SVG Filter Effects #1 Niko Kiirala Bulia Inkboard Protocol Spec / Lib Conversion Dale Harvey David Yip PDF Export with Cairo Mikos Erdelyi Ted Gould Memory Optimization Marina Diezler MenTaLguY SVG Filter Effects #2 Hugo Rodrigues Bulia As I understand it, one of the SVG filter projects will be focused on the internal handling of filters at the SPObject level, the other will be focused on the rendering of the filters. Thank you to everyone who applied this year. There were a number of excellent projects, and arriving at the final selection was extremely tough. Many of the proposed ideas were extremely cool and we would love to see them developed, and would love to be able to welcome the applicants to be part of the Inkscape community. Many criteria went into our final decision, more than can be easily related. However, one of the driving considerations was for work we felt would maximize the benefit to Inkscape users. We know from user feedback that these projects, if completed successfully, will have a transformational effect on Inkscape as an application - by the end of this summer, Inkscape will likely be a light-year ahead of where it is today. Here's a sampling of specific topics the translators have proposed discussing on the list: - where are we ? (what are the translation status ? (specific vocabulary, synchronization with development...) - get some best practices from the ML and then, write them down on the wiki - share experiences on specific blocking points - take a look at the various tasks, on different levels : (core software strings, tutorials, text docs, web pages...) [Inkscape] troubles with printing

Hello everybody, I'm using Inkscape (0.43) on Gentoo (2005.1) and experiencing follwing troubles with printing: a) can't get any print dialog (it does direct printig instead); b) does not print text (everything elese is printed well). I'm using CUPS for printing. This behaviour is independent of the desktop environment I use (KDE, Gnome or Enlightenment-0.17). Does anybody have an idea why does that happen and how to fix it? [Inkscape] Xara Announcement

Hi all, The big news with Xara is finally coming out today. :-) Xara has ported their product to Linux and will be Open Sourcing it. For more details, see http://xaraxtreme.org/. A press release is coming out, and is appended to this message. Charles Moir has been talking with me about this privately for the past couple months. His interest is to see Inkscape and Xara be in collaboration rather than competition, and I've been sharing ideas (such as the XAR/SVG project) along these lines. I've suggesting that merging inkscape and xara codebases would probably be impractical, but it might be possible to take the best bits of both and create something better than either, down the road. It seemed wisest in the near term for them to release what they've got, and to focus on making it work on Linux, which they've now done. :-) The key question for us is how we want to relate to Xara when the code is released. Would it make sense for us to share code with Xara? Should we merge, or remain distinct? They'd be open to sharing svn repositories if we'd like (I mentioned we've been looking to upgrade from cvs, and they already use svn)? Anyway, check it out (a Linux binary preview is downloadable, and there's also a pretty sweet movie) and share your thoughts. [Inkscape] Open Clip Art Library Release 0.18 Announcement

October 10, 2005 - Release 0.18 of Open Clip Art Library (http://www.openclipart.org), containing over 8000 SVG files, is now available for download and use. The theme for this month was 'pets'. We sought to collect images for different breeds, appropriate for use by animal shelters. For 0.19, due Nov 1st, the theme will be Halloween! This is your chance to send us your ghosts and goblins, bats, witches, and pumpkins! We'd also welcome printable templates for creating holiday decorations, usable in Inkscape, OpenOffice, Scribus, or other graphics applications. Some of the highlights of this release: * New top level categories 'science', 'electronics' * New subsections 'religion', 'astronomy', 'network', and more * Flags collection has been fleshed out / improved a bit more * Bunch of new signs/symbols * Lots of new vehicles, office, sports, music, and toys clipart A lot of the previously 'unsorted' art has been sorted and moved into other categories, and a lot of duplicates removed. While much more work is required before the collection is perfect, with this release it should be much easier to locate the clip art you need.
