Hi all, Hope it's OK to post here :) Just wanted to let you all know that I've released a little python-based tool for Inkscape that slices up files for use as web graphics. It doesn't yet generate (useful) HTML for you, but it's already quite flexible. It has two different engines, so it can slice simple stuff based on ruler guidelines you quickly drag across an image, or if you need something more complex, you can create a special "slices" layer, with rectangles showing where each slice should be. Be sure to hide the slices layer before actually slicing, since the rectangles will be rendered in your slices otherwise*. There is some future potential too: it could conceivably do much of what integrated slicers do (set file format for each slice etc.), thanks to the low-level XML access that Inkscape allows. I have succesfully built Inkscape 0.40-1 via Fink under Mac OS X 10.3 After I have moved to "~/Desktop/Inkscape.app/Contents" following the way explained for the Gimp.app The application lauches itself with a double-click and it is available there http://niwaconcept.free.fr//x11/Inkscape.zip But if it can be stored there that would be better. [Inkscape] GNOME Themes Extras 0.8.1 released

A new release of GNOME themes extras is out. This is a pure maintenance release with some updated translations and all theme engines removed. Since both smooth and industrial gtk theme engines now are in the gtk- engines package this release of gnome-themes-extras have them removed. The future if gnome-themes-extras is quite uncertain. People interested in helping out with maintaining it are welcomed as most of the themes are now either completely unmaintained or only slowly progressing. So I am sending this to the inkscape,librsvg and openclipart lists with a plea for some new artists to come on board to help complete the themes. Witohut new contributors I will probably decide to stop maintaining g-t- e and instead split out Nuvola in a separate package as its the only theme which have new icons made for it at this point in time. [Inkscape] Announcing Inkscape 0.41 Release

The Inkscape community is proud to announce the release of Inkscape 0.41, "A Cross-platform Open Source Vector Graphics (SVG) Drawing Tool" today. The primary focus of 0.41 has been bug fixing. With over 100 bugs fixed since the 0.40 release, this significantly strengthened Inkscape on Windows and for international users. We owe deep thanks to the many users who have worked patiently with us to report the problems and validate these fixes. Several serious crashes, memory leaks and mis-features are now corrected and certain areas are noticeably snappier thanks to user submitted bug reports. A couple new features also found their way in. First, the black and white tracing functionality introduced in 0.40 has been improved to also allow conversion of color and grayscale images. Second, is the addition of a new clone tiler facility which creates patterns, tesselations, and other sorts of geometric tiling arrangements. User requests and comments also stimulated a number of improvements to units handling, extensions, the Invert Selection command, layers selector, icon theming, and several new translations. A number of large scale changes are planned for the 0.42 release, including converting the interface to use Gtkmm and the incorporation of a new Document Object Model (DOM), which will provide the core to build scripting onto. = Inkscape 0.40 = 'Draw Freely' http://www.inkscape.org/ The Inkscape community is proud to announce the release 0.40 of Inkscape, "A Cross-platform Open Source Vector Graphics (SVG) Drawing Tool." This release includes three majorly requested new capabilities: Layers, Text-on-Path, and Bitmap tracing. In addition, there are many minor features, a number of usability enhancements, three new tutorials, and hundreds of bug fixes. This is by far the most feature-packed release the project has had. This is all due to the strong developers that have contributed countless hours on Inkscape 0.40. Following our last release four months ago, we have focused intensively on development, adding several new dependencies such as the Boehm garbage collector and the stable Gtk 2.4 libraries. Because of this, user's may encounter more trouble getting Inkscape installed on some platforms than in previous releases. To help those who run into this issue, we're also providing 'Static Binary' packages that include these new libraries inside the package, and thus, the static releases are very large. = Inkscape 0.39 = We are pleased to announce the Inkscape 0.39 release. The most important change in this release is the switch to the Pango library for font handling and Unicode support; a lot of work also went into new SVG features, export/import, UI, and usability. Here are the highlights: * Pango: smoother text display, auto kerning, better i18n (automatic font substitution, right-to-left text, bi-directional text), less platform dependence * New SVG features: markers (aka arrowheads), clones (svg:use), pattern tiles, RDF metadata; many SVG compliance bugfixes * New dialogs: Preferences, Find, Metadata * New and improved import/export file formats: PS, EPS, AI, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, Sketch, Dia, and more * Pure convenience: usable dropper, scale switches, Commands bar, more tool controls (including rounded stars), more import formats, more paper sizes, Revert command, edit inside group, better selection cues, spell checking, window layout configurable, streamlined Fill & Stroke, snapping improvements, better rounded corners in rects, path reversing, persistent rotation crosshair, per-object export hints, and much more * Internals: speedups, more C++ification, garbage collection, SigC++ signals, wider use of new data structures, extensive cleanup * Plus: new documentation, new translations, lots of assorted bugfixes (the infamous "freeze when dragging outside of window" bug on Windows is gone!) = Inkscape 0.38 = The focus of this release has been our Bug Hunt. Of the 57 open bug reports at the time of our last release, only 12 remain; of the 107 bugs submitted during this bughunt, all but 17 are now closed; the ratio of open to total bugs went down from 33% to 10%. Of the 285 bugs reported since the inception of the project, fewer than 30 remain. In total, over 135 bug reports were closed during the Bug Hunt. Countless other bugs were discovered by the developers and exterminated on the spot without ever going into the tracker. We are especially appreciative of the many users who have helped us identify the various bugs and verify the solutions. Project Status Sunday, April 4, 2004 We've achieved the goal set forth for the 0.38 release. The ratio of open-to-closed bug reports has been reduced from 33% to our goal of 10%, representing over 160 bugs closed during the 0.38 development cycle. Of the total of 285 bugs registered against Inkscape since the project's inception, fewer than 30 remain. We're ready at this point to make the release, but want to do some final QA, doublecheck that the contributed translation work is incorporated, and see about getting a couple critical Windows bugs patched. Looking forward, we've greatly revised our roadmap, stretching it out as far as the 0.51 release. Note that our roadmap is a reflection of what developers anticipate needing/wanting to work on, rather than a cast-in-stone set of orders, and is expected to change as we learn more and as new developers with new interests get involved. For this next release, we'd previously identified Extensions as the focus, however we're not as far along in terms of design as we need to be, so instead have pushed that back a couple releases, and will be focusing on adopting first Pango in 0.39, then GtkMM in 0.40. The Pango adoption is expected to solve a wide number of rather deep bugs and fundamental limitations in the text system, while the GtkMM change has been long anticipated for helping us get the GUI code in better, more maintainable order.
