[Inkscape] Xara / SVG translator project

Got some good news... Eric Wilhelm, developer of the Uber-Converter and member of the Inkscape community, is being sponsored by Xara to develop a graphics converter to allow Xara and Inkscape users to more easily share documents. Xara's full press release is here: http://www.xara.com/press/pressrelease.asp This tool will benefit both Xara and Inkscape. Xara will gain support for an important graphics file format quickly becoming a standard in the Open Source community. Inkscape will gain a new file converter that will allow Inkscape users to more seamlessly convert to and from Xara. In addition, due to Uber-converter's "hub" architecture, this may enable support for several further file formats. For some background... this effort came about after Charles Moir of Xara and I had some discussions about how Xara could become more involved in the Open Source community and the Inkscape community in particular. Since Xara does not yet support SVG, a xar2svg/svg2xar effort was clearly a logical first step. With Xara providing this code under the GPL, it makes a valuable contribution to the community, too! Anyway, it's great to welcome Xara to the Inkscape community; I hope we'll be able to work together with them even more closely in the future. Bryce

Hola! A new mailing list is now available for the Spanish and Castillian speaking Inkscape user community. You may subscribe to it here: http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/inkscape-user-es The guidelines for this list are the same as for the main user list: 1. Have fun! 2. Grow a friendly community 3. Strive to help out fellow users I will update the Inkscape site and add news about this. [Inkscape] Inkscape Project joins Google's Summer of Code

Google has accepted the Inkscape project as an available mentor for their Summer of Code program. In this program, students can undertake a coding project for the mentoring project. Google will award $4500 to the student for completion of the work, and donate $500 to the sponsoring organization. John Cliff was instrumental in motivating us to get involved, and will be serving as the primary coordinator and point of contact. He will help link students up with Inkscape developers and keep an eye on the overall process. He has created this page listing ideas for projects: http://www.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Googles_Summer_Of_Code (I'd like to propose that the $500 provided to Inkscape be used as a bounty for a follow-on project to the given work, such as review, integration, testing, documentation, etc. to be determined by the student with guidance from the inkscape developers.) Hi all, Hope it's OK to post here :) Just wanted to let you all know that I've released a little python-based tool for Inkscape that slices up files for use as web graphics. It doesn't yet generate (useful) HTML for you, but it's already quite flexible. It has two different engines, so it can slice simple stuff based on ruler guidelines you quickly drag across an image, or if you need something more complex, you can create a special "slices" layer, with rectangles showing where each slice should be. Be sure to hide the slices layer before actually slicing, since the rectangles will be rendered in your slices otherwise*. There is some future potential too: it could conceivably do much of what integrated slicers do (set file format for each slice etc.), thanks to the low-level XML access that Inkscape allows. I have succesfully built Inkscape 0.40-1 via Fink under Mac OS X 10.3 After I have moved to "~/Desktop/Inkscape.app/Contents" following the way explained for the Gimp.app The application lauches itself with a double-click and it is available there http://niwaconcept.free.fr//x11/Inkscape.zip But if it can be stored there that would be better. [Inkscape] GNOME Themes Extras 0.8.1 released

A new release of GNOME themes extras is out. This is a pure maintenance release with some updated translations and all theme engines removed. Since both smooth and industrial gtk theme engines now are in the gtk- engines package this release of gnome-themes-extras have them removed. The future if gnome-themes-extras is quite uncertain. People interested in helping out with maintaining it are welcomed as most of the themes are now either completely unmaintained or only slowly progressing. So I am sending this to the inkscape,librsvg and openclipart lists with a plea for some new artists to come on board to help complete the themes. Witohut new contributors I will probably decide to stop maintaining g-t- e and instead split out Nuvola in a separate package as its the only theme which have new icons made for it at this point in time. [Inkscape] Announcing Inkscape 0.41 Release

The Inkscape community is proud to announce the release of Inkscape 0.41, "A Cross-platform Open Source Vector Graphics (SVG) Drawing Tool" today. The primary focus of 0.41 has been bug fixing. With over 100 bugs fixed since the 0.40 release, this significantly strengthened Inkscape on Windows and for international users. We owe deep thanks to the many users who have worked patiently with us to report the problems and validate these fixes. Several serious crashes, memory leaks and mis-features are now corrected and certain areas are noticeably snappier thanks to user submitted bug reports. A couple new features also found their way in. First, the black and white tracing functionality introduced in 0.40 has been improved to also allow conversion of color and grayscale images. Second, is the addition of a new clone tiler facility which creates patterns, tesselations, and other sorts of geometric tiling arrangements. User requests and comments also stimulated a number of improvements to units handling, extensions, the Invert Selection command, layers selector, icon theming, and several new translations. A number of large scale changes are planned for the 0.42 release, including converting the interface to use Gtkmm and the incorporation of a new Document Object Model (DOM), which will provide the core to build scripting onto.
